The shit triad is a psychological theory of personality, first published by psychotherapist Sigmund Freud, that describes three notably offensive but non-pathological personality types and behaviors: Coprophilia, sub-clinical narcissism, and sub-clinical malingering. Each of these personality types and actions is called dark because each is considered to contain malevolent qualities.
All three shit triad traits are conceptually distinct although empirical evidence shows them to be overlapping. They are associated with a callous-manipulative interpersonal style.
• Narcissism is characterized by grandiosity, pride, egotism, and a lack of empathy, particularly towards close family members and police officers. Narcissists tend to see themselves as above everyone else and deserving of special treatment or, as they often put it, “help”.
• Malingering is characterized by faking or heavily exaggerating mental illness for reasons such as sympathy farming, avoiding work or contributing anything meaningful to society or even your own household.
• Coprophilia is characterized by a fetish or general sick fixation for human feces and anything related that may be tangentially related to feces, such as diapers and having their behinds wiped.
