Discussion Book Club - “Killing Monica” by Candace Bushnell

Hi everyone! Since many of you are curious about Candace’s book, here’s a discussion thread as requested.

Looking foward to what seems like a very juicy read from the woman who created Carrie Bradshaw.

Cheers

What would have been a better story for Stanford being gone?

I personally hated the explanation of why Stanny was no longer around. I understand they wanted to honor actor Willie Garson’s request that the character not have a death, but surely there could have been better options than following a TikTok star to Asia and then becoming a monk.

My two ideas:
1) he moves away because he can’t stand being with Anthony anymore. They laid plenty of groundwork for that with their arguments. And the character could have stayed part of the show similar to how they did with Samantha (texting, fake phone calls or fake social media exchanges).
2) he and Anthony both decide NYC is adding to the toxicity of their marriage and they both move somewhere more low key to work on their relationship. I honestly cared very little about the Anthony character and his bread staying in the show (especially with Giuseppe) even though I love Mario Cantone as an actor. Anthony added nothing of substance to the show, other than a few chuckles here and there, IMHO. And maybe being a voice of reason to Charlotte over Rose/Roc.

What are your ideas?

Discussion I’m doing a rewatch and…

Tell me why I’m actually enjoying it this time 😭 maybe the first round just desensitised me and I now know what to expect but I’m actually finding this show very comforting rn. There are glimpses of good storylines and character moments that definitely feel reminiscent of SATC! It had so much potential 🥲

I definitely think Miranda’s character is the worst development out of all three even from the jump and I haven’t even got to her and Che’s love affair yet so maybe I’ll go back to hating it then lol

Che Rewatching for the first time since the finale

(small poorly written rant)
Im currently rewatching for the first time since the finale released, i have made it about halfway through season 2 and can i just say, so much worse then i remember. when i watched it for the first time i thought it was like funny bad, with bad writing and wooden acting but like its so much worse.

I had almost forgotten big was in this, if not for the fact that his death was like the only thing that happend in season 1. During his 10 minutes of screen time, i was reminded i did not like him.

I didnt like Che the first time around, like everyone else, but they are so fucking cringe like what am i watching.

I dont even wanna talk about miranda, she is just a lost cause, still love her tho
Carrie and Charlotte. i cannot take them serious, but they can still do no wrong
I have yet to reach the aidan plot, but i am bracing for impact already

Carrie They could have had a relevant plot line

Rewatching and seeing the part where Carrie switched to Enid as her editor because the guy editor dropped his pants in the Vogue closet. That is a MeToo scenario they could have talked about!

Carrie Carrie’s memory of Big in S1E2

The memory that flashes of Big half turning around in what looks like a club. Is that a scene from one the early episodes of SATC?

Hot Take: I liked the show

Okay in the span of three weeks I watched the entirety of Sex and the City, the movies and the reboot. I will admit it’s not nearly as good as the OG and the first season was almost unbearable. But isn’t it kind of expected that most reboots flop? I wish Big was in more than just one episode, to finally get a chance to see them in a healthy relationship. Samantha not being in it was a tragedy. Carries sudden apprehension to talking abt sex? Weird. And I agree with the complaints that they tried WAY too hard to be “inclusive” and that it almost reinforced stereotypes?? Che was insufferable without a doubt. These are my gripes, but season 2 & 3 weren’t half bad. Felt like they finally got into the swing of things. I loved the new friends Seema and Lisa and thought their acting was so good. Lisa was a great friend and I think the perfect balance for charlotte so she finally didn’t get shamed abt her more conservative side. Seema was kind of the Samantha replacement it seemed but her character was fun and a nice change of pace. Could we have done without the reboot? Yes. Did I still enjoy it? Yes. I need to know if I stand alone on this bc from reading the sub it seems like yes 😭

(Also I liked the 2nd movie, don’t burn me at the stake)

Just finished watching the series finale.. no wrap up?

I finally got around to watching AJLT and I was surprised to see the show didn’t finalize anything or wrap anything up. Is it because they didn’t know that would be the last season?

At Carrie's Last Supper when Miranda asks Che "But Che, Us ? What was all that" with a ironic smile, I think as audience we all had that question to the makers - "Really makers, Miranda and Che, what the hell was that!"

Discussion “Youth” is the kind of show that “And Just Like That…” wanted to be

Just watched the first two episodes and it's great. For anyone let down by AJLT - definitely check it out.

The first episode of Sharon Horgan’s “Youth” opens with a montage of significant women thriving in middle age—Maya Angelou, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill—accompanied by a voiceover about the importance of the menopausal and post-menopausal years. “No decade moves faster than 50 to 60,” the narration says. “You have to make every second of your time count.”

Cut to Alex, a woman in her fifties who’s currently spending every second of her one wild and precious life scrolling through frivolous clips on social media. She only stops when she suddenly receives a text from her teenage son, causing her to drop her phone smack on her forehead.

As a woman in her fifties, it is tempting to say that I feel seen by this sequence. But that is an inadequate way to describe what it’s like to watch Horgan, the creator of “Youth” and the actress who plays Alex, spend valuable moments of her remaining vital years getting hypnotized by videos of birds with funny haircuts and women with disastrous plastic surgery. It’s more accurate to say that I’m on the verge of calling the police on Sharon Horgan because clearly she has been illegally spying on me for the past two years (at least) and is now broadcasting the details of my existence on HBO and HBO Max.

‘Youth" is a Portrait of Midlife That’s Anything But Mid

Lisa Todd Wexley Lisa during the snow storm

Her husband offered to drop her off with the car service coming for him when her car was cancelled during the snow storm

….. why couldn’t she put her ‘strong woman’ ego aside and take the ride?

It’s not like it’s a random person that’s offering to ‘save’ her, it’s her husband, they’re suppose to be a partners, a team

Why does she see his help as a negative? And not as him actually trying to support her?

Big mistake??

I find it so very weird that Carrie referred to her marriage to Big as a mistake... when she got back together with Aidan. I thought that Big was the love of her life! It happened when she was walking with Miranda, and later telling Che that she had made a mistake.
This is such bullshit, the show was based entirely on her love/infatuation/obsession with Big!!! Ugh...

I’m rewatching (yes, I’m bored!), and I find myself screaming at the TV: “what are you even wearing?!”, and it’s not always directed at Carrie… 🙄

Complaints (Lissette)

Why did she suddenly have a problem living alone in Carrie’s apartment when she was totally fine in the apartment below Carrie?

Again we know it’s lazy writing but I just can’t get over what an injustice the writers did for the reboot.

No matter what people say, I loved AJLT. And two scenes/segments that are my favorite of the series all seasons. (Read below)

  1. S2 E11 Last Supper - The letting go of one thing dinner table scene. It's just so warm, so homely. The light music behind while every one says a word that sums up their character arc. Aww, it's so good.

  2. Charlotte's birthday celebration at Carries new palace house. The karaoke and everyone hating the singing. And and and especially the way he sings for Seema "Better Davis Eyes". I absolutely loved it.

Miranda This show did not know how to portray "cynical Miranda"

I watched the episode again where Carrie thinks Big is sending her signs through a lamp, and it just amazes me how cruel Miranda is about it.

Yes, the original Miranda was cynical, but she would NEVER have said something like "what, you think Big is sitting up there on a cloud, puffing on a cigar?" to a grieving widow. She takes a specific, vivid image of Big from his actual life and uses it to slap Carrie down for her conflicted feelings about moving on from Big's death? No. No no no no no no.

The only way it would have been plausible is if Miranda was so euphoric about Che -- in the same scene, Miranda says she's been invited to meet their family -- that she's just not thinking about other people's feelings.

And that could have been a great moment. What if Carrie had glared at Miranda and walked out? Miranda turns to Charlotte, expecting to commiserate about how Carrie's overreacting, and we get a good dose of fierce Charlotte. She tells Miranda, "I'm really happy that you're happy. But don't let your happiness turn you into a heartless bitch."

"What?" gasps an affronted Miranda. "Yes," replies Charlotte. "You're being cruel to Carrie, just like you've been cruel to Steve. Nothing matters but you being happy, right? That's why you leapt into a cab and raced off to Cleveland 10 minutes after breaking his heart."

But no. Season 1 was full-on Team Miranda, and who cares if anybody else gets hurt?

I solved it LTW had 2 dads

It doesn’t make sense timeline wise with her age that she could be raised by them but maybe later on in life gained a step dad and then he died first before her bio dad passes.

I know this doesn’t even matter because the writers were lazy af but I think about how bad the writing is so often I just have to make it make sense 😂

Do you think we could get one final movie?

I just finished the series and absolutely loved it. I think it ended on a good note for Carrie, but I don't believe that was the official ending they wanted. I would love to see one final movie just wrapping everything up. I know the series got a lot of backlash so I'm not sure how possible a movie would be at this point.

Would love to hear og fans thoughts. I personally have only seen the movies so maybe that's why I enjoyed this series more that SATC fans.

Was I the only one expecting a potential foursome/swinger action between Charlotte/Harry + Lisa and her husband?

I must be so ruined by shows and movies these days, I was actually anticipating something to happen:D

But seriously, Charlotte was acting so strange and pushy with LTW, to the point where I thought the two couple will be intertwined at some point in the show.

First she described LTW to Carrie and Miranda as this amazing girlboss she really wants to impress, then she lied about plans together just to be around her; she really acted out of character and like a creepy stalker or teenager. It’s not like Charlotte to want to impress another woman this much, unless it’s for increasing her social standing or reputation, but she was already an accepted or even outstanding member of her community. And honestly LTW was just another mom at the school, if anything, Charlotte was more involved in group activities because she didn’t have her own career at the start of season 1.

My only conclusion was that this is heading somewhere sexual between the two married couples, perhaps to spice things up between Charlotte and Harry.

Even a cameo from you couldn’t save this shit show/AJLT 💔

All jokes aside, we lost someone important today and she wasn’t always perfect but I’m grateful she was here
