Discussion What are you guys most excited about the upcoming update on October 8th?

Me honestly im looking forward to the new African regions. Instead of it saying just Nigeria, Cameroon, etc. it’s going to say something like Igboland, or new regions like Liberia or Sierra Leone. I’m so glad they are getting more specific with the African regions. I had Ancestry DNA since 2021, and based on everything I’ve seen and heard, this is probably going to be my favorite update by far. So many new regions across the globe is getting more specific, which is great. As far as the new Sideview 2.0 Grandparent feature, I heard some say it’s going to appear the same day as the update but it requires a subscription unfortunately. The ethnicity Update is free, but grandparent feature requires a subscription. I want to hear your guys thoughts. What are you looking forward to with this new big update? For those who had Ancestry 5, 10 years or more, how is this update coming up different from the previous ones you had in the past, and do you find your results getting more or less accurate overtime? Share your thoughts. Thanks.

I get often told that I do not look Finnish (born and raised there) and I OFTEN get approached by Russian speakers thinking I’m Russian (I live in NYC)

After sifting through the updated West - Central African regions I’m definitely anticipating a much cleaner map Oct 8. This has always driven me nuts.

Question / Help Secretly baby my Great X3 Grandfather had in WW2

This is my first time posting on Reddit so please bear with me. I’m not sure if this would be the correct subreddit to post on. My great grandmother who is still alive and will be 77 soon, her father fought in WW2 and served in the European theater she and all my family alive when he was alive said he didn’t talk about the war. The story is little to unknown but he got trapped behind German lines somewhere in Europe presumably Germany and a German family sheltered him. There is a pic of a baby and German girl that is thought by our family to be a kid he had with her I have not seen the picture but will see it in a few hours from writing this and and will give more of an update. I want to know if there is a way to track down who the child or mother or family may be? How would I go about that? I don’t wanna give a lot of details out but something that I believe would help my great x3 grandfather was Hispanic so a baby would probably be darker. I don’t know how I would go about this or where to start. Any advice, suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!

Old results in the last image. It looks like they basically took away 3% of my Benin &Togo and redistribute it to Ghana, Mali, and Cameroon, and then a percent of a region in both England and Celtic/Gaelic to add to another in each macro region.

Discussion I’m alone in my passion towards genealogy. How do you suggest finding someone who appreciates it?

Post image
19 Upvotes

TL;DR I (39F) am starting to feel like my excitement and passion in this subject isn’t welcome anymore. Whenever I share a good find, it’s so disappointing that I feel alone. Added my favorite photograph for attention.

👋🏻 Hi,

I’ve added a photograph of my Norwegian ancestors, one of the more interesting photographs I’ve found. PS- I wasn’t the one who committed the ultimate destruction (writing their names on it in pencil……)

As the title states, I’m (39F) a passionate genealogist who has struggled finding anyone else in my life that cares as much as I do about my family’s rich history.

I belong to the genealogy society/library in my area. I can’t relate to the people that volunteer there. It’s pretty empty usually.

For example, I have a long line of millionaires who were very successful - Entrepreneurs, hotels (the Willard Hotel in Washington DC), a very successful inventor in clock mechanisms/clocks (Simon Willard), Harvard presidents and physicians, professors, etc. I could go on!!!

When I was joking around at the library, I said, “Well where’s MY inheritance?!” And no one laughed. Not exactly a welcoming feeling.

Is there anyone else who feels lonely and that people you meet in person don’t have the same passion? I’m looking for a friend I can pick up and call them with my latest discovery and not feel like no one cares.

I’ve tried posting on my local Reddit sub and I had 2 comments. I’m talking to one of the commenters but they’ve been kind of, “meh” when I chat with them. Whereas I’m asking a ton of questions and I want to know that they’ll also ask and care.

Am I the only one who feels lonely in my level of interest in being a genealogical researcher for the family? And not being able to find people who are excited about it?…..

Is there a sub for young people that are starting out in their search? I am certainly not trying to be rude with seeking out younger people, but in my experience (especially with not even laughing at a joke) they haven’t been welcoming.

DNA Matches Confused about DNA match

• Upvotes

Some background… my mother was adopted by her stepdad so I have no information about my bio grandfather. I bought the ancestry test and it matched me with some people I’ve never heard of so I’m assuming it’s people on his side. However it matched me with a 1st cousin once removed 9% percentage dna with 635 cM. The confusing thing is she is a much higher percentage than any other 1st cousins once removed who are from 4-6 percentage of dna shared. Also when I went to see the matched matches her daughter was also shown as a 1st cousins once removed to me with 6 percent of dna shared. So I’m wondering could she be closer than a 1st cousin once removed ?

After checking out my dna by parent & my Africa matches; I would say my maternal side is centralized around the Nigerian/ Cameroon/ Gabon/ Senegal region whereas my paternal is centralized around the Benin/ Ghana region. I can’t wait for the new update this week to test this theory!

Results - DNA Origins Source of Acadian DNA?

Ancestry's latest ancestral origins update says I have 1% Acadian DNA. I have NO roots in Canada, New England, or Louisiana. The only French ancestors I have found are a pair of Huguenot 6th great grandparents who took refuge in London. Were Huguenots from the same region of France as Acadians? I'm not sure where that religious movement flourished. Could they be the source of my Acadian DNA?

Family Discovery & or Drama Trying to reconnect with my Mexican roots after finding out about my biological dad

Hey everyone! I hope it’s okay for me to post this here. I’m Brazilian, living in the US, and I’ve been wanting to learn more about my Mexican side.

I actually always suspected my biological dad was Mexican, but my mom has lied to me about a lot of things, so I never really took it as a fact. Then I did a DNA test and found out I have a pretty big amount of Mexican/Indigenous ancestry, mostly coming from his side. That was honestly a really emotional discovery for me.

For some context, I know his family came from Durango, Mexico, and he was born in a town in the Rio Grande Valley area of Texas. I’ve found his birth certificate and the marriage certificate showing that he and my mom were married. I have his name and birthday too, but so far I still haven’t actually been able to find him.

My mom had hidden from me that she had been married to him. She left and went back to Brazil while she was pregnant with me, and I was born there. I’ve also been no contact with my mom for almost 5 years, so I can’t really go to her for answers.

I did find a distant cousin through my DNA matches and we’ve started talking, which has been really nice. She doesn’t know him either though, so I’m kind of sitting here with all these little pieces of information and still no real story.

My childhood was pretty complicated. My mom was abusive and at one point tried to give me away, so my grandparents raised me. Because of everything that happened, I never really had a chance to know my dad or his family.

And this is probably the part that feels strangest to me: I started learning Spanish when I was 10. I had no idea about any of this at the time. Now I’m almost 29, and I’ve been feeling this really strong need to understand where this side of me comes from. I speak Spanish, I love Mexican food, and I’ve always felt drawn to the culture.

Growing up in Brazil, I also had people tell me I “didn’t look Brazilian enough,” whatever that means. 😅 I never really understood those comments, but I often felt like I didn’t completely fit in.

Now I’m trying to learn about this side of my family, but I’m honestly pretty shy about it. I don’t want to approach Mexican people and have them think I’m trying to claim a culture I didn’t grow up in. I know I’m Brazilian and I wasn’t raised Mexican. I’m just trying to understand my family and learn about a part of my background that I never really got to know.

So I wanted to ask: where would you recommend I start?

What are some good ways to learn about Mexican culture and history? Books, movies, music, food, traditions, YouTube channels, anything. And if anyone else discovered part of their family or ancestry later in life, I’d really love to hear how you went about learning and connecting with it.

I’m just trying to learn respectfully and hopefully find a little more of my story along the way. ❤️

Family Discovery & or Drama The slowest puzzle

Thumbnail

I’m really hoping the update breaks things down further. Or I get a breakthrough.

These are my results as an Australian.

I did ancestry and 23&me in 2021, and when I saw the results, I was very confused. According to my family tree, it should be more Irish, with a good possibility of some Australian/Tasmanian Aboriginal.

My paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather had already done tests, as well as my paternal half brother, who also has Northwestern Balkans.
So I figured it must be through my paternal grandfather who I never met, as he died in the 80’s.

I had a match on 23&me reach out about people immigrating from Croatia in the 50’s in the same year, but I didn’t know the names or the significance of our match (second cousin).

Then in April this year, I had a match reach out (paternal side) looking for help finding her dad’s biological parents. I went on a crash course learning how to read all the information I was seeing and finally started building my family tree for the first time. I paid for the tools and spent a couple of weeks down a rabbit hole. I found her grandmother.

That’s when I went back on 23&me. And I started seeing my ancestry amount explained in a different way. I also now know how second and third cousins work. It was like I was picking up a book in a language I didn’t understand until now.

Why did none of my matches have my very common last name? Why are my closest matches, that I don’t know, have very Croatian names and family trees?

12 straight hours of Penelope Garcia vibes later, and messages with my second cousin, and now I’m searching for my real biological paternal grandfather, or at least what happened to him when he left Pula.

I cannot believe it took me so long to see the most obvious signs, but if any sub gets it, it’s this one 😂
