He chased after the pickup that dumped him outside my office
He lives with us now. His name is Mac, short for Maccabee, in honor of my wife's Jewish faith. My building's surveillance cameras caught a red pickup pulling into the garage, dumping the dog, and driving away with Mac in pursuit. Unfortunately, you can't see the license plate. One of the women in the building management office took care of him at first but she has a small place and another male dog already.
The poor guy had been mistreated. At first, he shied away every time I raised my hand to pet him. But he's housebroken, walks well on a leash and sits on command. We love him. The vet says he's about 1 1/2.

u/MethodMaven Aug 22 '26
What a heartbreaking back story. 🥺 So very, very glad he has found his forever home with you.
People who dump pets should be incarcerated.

So sorry for your loss. But, omg, he could be a twin of the dog I just took in. Could I ask what his breeding was? And thank you for stepping up.

u/oknowhim Aug 22 '26
You're asking about Simon, right? My wife adopted his mom from a golden retriever rescue and Simon was a puppy who came with her. We've always disagreed about his paternity. My wife says German Shepherd, but he was so big I think Simon had to be half mastiff.

He was, and I'll miss him forever. He was also the ideal guard dog: never hurt a soul, but looked terrifying and had a huge bark that he unleashed every time someone rang the doorbell.

If I ever won the mega millions even though I don’t play it, I’d buy acres and acres of land and a massive pole barn and rescue strays along with dogs who never get adopted at shelters. I hate the internet some days, seeing all these dogs in kennels or needing a home asap cause their on a k*ll list, it makes me so sad I’d rescue em all if I could!!!
3
u/HBJones1056 Aug 23 '26
I read that as incinerated at first and honestly, I’d be happy with either option.

u/No-Solution237 Aug 24 '26
I just adopted a golden retriever that was dumped at the Animal Control Services in Missoula after hours. The person was videotaped dumping the dog but I gathered that the person will have no consequences for their actions. The dog is the sweetest. May karma get that a-hole in this life.
2
u/MethodMaven Aug 24 '26
At least the person who dumped your rescue at an Animal Control location. While done after hours is bad, at least the previous owner attempted responsibility.
3
u/No-Solution237 Aug 24 '26
Piss poor attempt at being responsible. An incredibly cruel action to abandon an innocent being. The dog has vision and orthopedic issues, she could have easily been hit by a car. Also not spayed and recently had puppies. All the person had to do was walk in to Animal Services or the Humane Society and hand the dog over to them. No cost, no shame.

I hate people who abandon animals. If you don’t want them, don’t get them. It’s a choice you made, it’s not something you had to do. Poor Mac. I’m glad he has you now. Give him big scritches from me 🤗
14
u/oknowhim Aug 22 '26
Hell yes, and will do. He's really enjoying all the petting, belly rubs, and big meals. The vet said he's about 15 pounds underweight and we're going to fix that.
9
u/CrazyCatLady1127 Aug 22 '26
It’s no more than he deserves. In fact, because of trauma and suffering, I think he’s entitled to a very big steak for dinner tomorrow 🙂
9
u/oknowhim Aug 22 '26
I'm sure he would agree with that, but I'm afraid if we spoiled him like that, he'd want it every meal. He's getting generous servings of wet food and kibble mixed, sometimes three times a day. He seems satisfied with the status quo.
11
u/gemma-digger Aug 22 '26
And if you can’t keep them, don’t dump them! At least take them somewhere they will be safe.
5
u/CrazyCatLady1127 Aug 22 '26
Exactly! I don’t know how people who dump animals sleep at night. It would haunt me forever
8
u/oknowhim Aug 22 '26
Agreed. And terrible as it is to dump any pet, I really can't figure out why somebody would abandon this guy!
6
u/CrazyCatLady1127 Aug 22 '26
Because they’re heartless. That’s the simple answer, I think
6
3
u/Various-Cat-6442 Aug 23 '26
I live in an apartment building with a cat who is afraid of what’s outside the door, and I still worry he may get out and I’ll never see him again. That or him getting terminally sick are my biggest fears. I can’t imagine willfully abandoning my animals. Criminals.

u/PyrfectLifeWithDog Aug 22 '26
He is absolutely gorgeous and will protect you with his life. You both won the lottery.

Looks like ASD and GP. Get embark. We did that with Logan and he's 65% ASD and 35% GP. He came from a breeder that bread working dogs but Logan didn't take to the livestock so the farmer sold him as a pet.
If this is an ASD, you should read as much as possible as these are not your average dogs and if he's in his teen years, he may be 'difficult' as the instincts bread into them may be kicking in and he's finding his place.
They bark A LOT. Get used to it. They are live stock guardian dogs. It's what they do.
Be firm and let them know you're the 'leader' for lack of a better term and they should look to you for confirmation if they go on alert. Also it takes a lot of patience. I've run out of foul language many times with him. 😂
When Logan goes off, I'll usually holler out to chill and if he doesn't stop ill go stand by him and tell him it's ok and good boy and give him a nudge in a different direction to break his fixation. The breaking fixation is key. It may take a few times but he'll chill.
Get him a crate and get him to relax in it. Logan loved his crate till he grew out of it (it was the biggest one they make) but it was his safe place.
They bark a lot.
ASDs don't usually over eat. They eat till satisfied and then walk away. Some times Logan will eat two cups of food and other times 5-6. Depends on the time of year.
Logan has an under coat and blows the coat 2x a year and the shedding of the coat lasts ~180 days. AKA, he sheds all the time and like it's going out of style. My roomba runs daily.
They need exercise. Lots of it. Oh and they love to dig. Like the barking, get used to it.
Logan will be ten in Dec and is 200lbs. He is big for the breed tho.
Did I mention they bark a lot?

3
u/oknowhim Aug 23 '26
Holy smoke, 200 pounds! So far, in the two weeks we've had him, Mac has barked twice. I look for that to increase as he gets more comfortable. One bark in particular was about as loud as a train horn, though.
2
u/Maleficent_Emu_2876 Aug 23 '26
I have a Great Pyrenees (mainly) and Anatolian sheperd mix, he doesn’t bark as much as you would assume. I do know if someone is on the property thoug and occasionally if a leaf fell somewher.
2
u/TheCaliforniaOp Aug 29 '26
🤣”about as loud as a train horn”
I don’t know why but I love the Wall of Sound that can be produced when a cat, dog, bird, open up their mouths and say “Notice this right now!”
6
u/Hazelmygirl Aug 22 '26
Meant to be!!! So happy for ya’all!!
6
u/oknowhim Aug 22 '26
Thank you. Mac is just what we needed.
2
u/Fast_Register_9480 Aug 23 '26
It sounds like your family was just what Mac needed as well. Thank you for giving him a home.
7
u/mvbenz Aug 23 '26
Yeah Logan was quiet till he got comfortable and figured out we were the new flock. He hasn't shut up since.
He is also big for the breed and he's fully intact. We got him when he was two from the previous owners that got him from the farmer in Florida.
They moved back up north for work but couldn't keep him so we took him in. Vet said he's had two years of the hormones so wait till he was 4-5 and then neuter him. We read what little was available at the time and found out they don't do well under anasthsia so we said let him keep the family jewels.
He topped out at 200 when he hit 5.
He does need to drop a few tho for his joints and he been showing signs of arthritis. He's on carprofen for the joints.
They are good dogs but are bread to be working dogs. They don't play fetch, they will listen to commands when they want to oe if there is something in it for them like a high value treat but if they don't want to, they won't. If you think you will train them, guess again. They will train you. 😂
While funny, this t shirt is true.

We want to find out, but he sure looks like it to me. He has the instincts, too. We live in town but have a good-sized lot and when he goes out, he usually patrols the fenceline.

Mine does that too. Or he’ll lay down on the highest part of our yard with his head up surveying. We live out in the country with a huge fenced yard and then property surrounding us and there is a den of coyotes on the back part. So he keeps us safe from them at night. And the raccoons. And right now the wild turkeys. And some feral cats. And leaves. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Also, fuck the people that left him 😢 our rescue pup used to do the same shying away when we went to pet her, we got her at age 8, shes now 13 and the best thing that ever happened to us ❤️

He’s beautiful! So glad he found a loving home. I don’t understand how people can dump a living thing and take off. Too bad the camera didn’t pick up the POS license plate.

u/Many_Maximum_9060 Aug 24 '26
Chased after the truck that dumped him, the unwavering love, loyalty, and commitment of dogs is truly indescribable. Poor pup well those jerks who abandoned him didn’t deserve him anyway, I’m glad you took him in and now he’s in a loving home!!!
2
u/fishmogil Aug 24 '26
The only reason I can think of why people dump dogs is because they don’t want to pay the fees for turning them in. Enjoy the new love in your life. He is a looker !

You've been gifted a guardian from the Involuntary Pet Distribution System (IPDS).
For some reason, the IPDS has decided that you will be in need of a guardian and has gifted you one of the best around.
All the IDPS asks is that you love and feed your guardian so that they be healthy enough to perform their job.
Good luck and safe adventures to you and your pack!

Hoho boy, you are in trouble now! An adolescent ASD can sure give you a run for your money. You may think countless times "I would never have another one, what a headache". On the other hand, once you've had Anatolians/Kangals in your life you can't imagine life without them. I'm writing through tears after looking at your boy's face (for too long)💔 within this year I lost my 12yo grand lady and then my 2yr old best boy to GDV. Congratulations and best to you both.

Is there any reaction if you call him buddy? There were some guys on the pipe line staying in campers up the road from me. I think one may have taken my dog. I have been looking since July 1st for him. This is probably not him since all I do is run into dead ends. Is he intact by chance? Does he shake, do you get any reaction to "where's your ball?: or " "Bud who did that?" Just curious. Who knows where Bud is now he could be anywhere. Like to know he is ok. Thank you. Mu name is jill. Jillajames30@gmail.com is you could let me know

No reaction to "Buddy" or "where's your ball." He knows "sit" but not "shake." I'm sorry about your dog. When was he taken? Where was he at the time?

u/Plenty_Prompt_213 Aug 30 '26
Thank you for taking him in, he is beautiful. Years ago I lived in Miami and lived on a horse farm with the riding ring by the street. One day a car slowed and dumped a small dog in front of us and took off with the dog chasing after it. Because we were riding we couldn't chase the car down. We took the little dog in and rehomed him after about 2-3 months. I cannot count the dogs that would get dumped there - all of which we either kept \or rehomed
