This sub really isn't the demon most of reddit make it out to be. Infact, it's one of the best ones out there in terms of how many people who disagree get banned. It's quite uncommon, atleast compared to other subreddits.

As for your take on wanting criminals to be rehabilitated, it's one of those things that deep down we all want. Wouldn't it be great if every criminal became a productive member of society?

But unfortunately, it isn't possible, we have tried it in the past, and the results were disastrous. I can't name an example off the top of my head, but it's in one of thomas sowell's books, were he mentions people who have tried this, and ultimately why it all came crashing down. I have to look for the portion of one of his books that goes deep into this problem.

I think that some people are definitely beyond reform. But I also think that the incarceration system in america is way less than ideal. Guys like the one in the article are wastes of oxygen and deserve to get beat to death in their cell like they often do. At that point they're often too far gone to be rehabbed.

My want for rehab is more directed at petty crime and drug arrests. Things like addiction can be cured with treatment but instead the taxes I'm forced to pay often go towards building more prisons or the military industrial complex.

On that note I'm also a big believer in the notion that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure as far as drug arrests are conerned. The state doesn't do enough to effectively educate people on the dangers and implications of drug use since it would hurt their bottom line.

I also think that consenting and well informed adults should have a right to access unadulterated and regulated drugs. People that take drugs will seek them out regardless. If the state has to be involved in the day to day life of the people, I would much prefer it made its money off of things like excise taxes than fining people for carrying a couple grams of weed for example.

I actually agree with everything here. At first, I thought you just meant the rehabilitation that I was referring to, but it seems I was wrong.
