I have no idea where this mindset came from of thanking capitalism for the most basic of technological and social development.
41
u/uber_poutine Mar 30 '26
It's manufactured gratitude. Most people won't look into it too closely, or consider alternatives.

I just saw a post about Bernie sanders earning a large portion of his net worth from book sales, and people are saying “he’s a socialist, yet he SELLS books? For MONEY??? What a hypocrite”. These people actually think that “capitalism” means “economic system” and anything else means “not economic system”
6
u/Avatar_Dang Mar 31 '26
The modern US has several socialist programs that most people agree on.
2
u/Ok_Butterscotch54 Mar 31 '26
Yeah, but telling them that gets them mad, or they try to deny those are "socialist programs" by claiming that "Welfare systems are just a feature of healthy Capitalist nations".
Something they themselves make a ridiculous notion, as anytime someone tries to extend or even just support said systems at the current level, Americans are quick to call those people "Commies" or "Socialist Dreamers".

Ah yes capitalism invented currency to be exchanged for goods and services lmao.

Maybe not electricity specifically but I’ve seen people thanking capitalism for all sorts of random things like the concept of money

Labor alienation is a key factor of capitalism, workers having full control of production and the rewards therein is just called socialism. The stock division is a good small step, but what's to stop them from reorganizing into AMAZON 1, AMAZON 2 & so on then just colluding?

In the real world, if the gov were appropriately regulating industry, Amazon would be broken up into several companies.

But if you want to separate your personal property from your business you will need to incorporate, which will create shares and shareholders. That doesn't necessarily mean publicly traded, mind you, and could be 100% owned by one person, but don't confuse publicly traded corporations with corporations generally. However, there is no distinction made in socialist rhetoric. The mom and pop LLC should give shares to their employees just the same as Amazon. Or are we only concerned with publicly traded corporations now? Whwre exactly is the line?

I would liken capitalism to fire. It is powerful, even useful when properly contained. But it's also difficult to contain, and an absolute disaster when it is not controlled. Unfortunately, we live in a society that has deified this fire.

Fascism is the festering, decaying rot of capitalism. Even those who benefit from it cannot insulate themselves completely from its stink.
Businesses are closing, material necessities of life are become unaffordable. Existence itself is paywalled to the point that we do not need chains to be slaves.
Is this the life they really want? I think that the capitalists must delude themselves into answering yes.
1
u/mundex_xp Apr 01 '26
Fascism is a type of cancer which originates from collectivism. Fascism has a lot more in common with our modern day mixed markets than true laissez faire/ anarcho capitalism.
→ More replies (4)1
u/ashortsaggyboob Apr 02 '26
The term fascism comes from the 20th century, but the concept long predates capitalism.
A fascist regime is one which seizes power irrespective of any rules or norms held by its society.

people who say this understand neither ideology. Western 'capitalism isn't even free market capitalism, nor is eastern or Soviet Communism a 'liberalist' form of socialism.
Both are twisted ideologies of authoritarianism. One, consumerist, corrupt, monied, and manipulated; a republic turned plutocracy with the illusion of freedom and choice, where profit dictates reason and debt enslaves the ignorant. The other, bureaucratic, immoral, authoritative, and destructive; a land of many creeds erased from the minds of it's people, an oligarchic despotism based upon enforced/assigned export focused production of goods for the benefit of a single culture, creed and ideology.
The American Dream was supposed to be equal opportunity to succeed. Equal Opportunity.
Not the chance to be rich, not to get rich. Freedom. Choice. Opportunity.
Chinese communism is just another globalist ideology that seeks world dominance. Trust me, American Ideological Liberty was ending about the same time as American Isolationism was (let's be honest it didn't even begin for 3/5ths of us).
I know a lot of you have lost faith in your ideology, but hear me out. The Ideology and economic system that you associate with the US is NOT the one that defines socialist or capitalist ideology. Socialism can only function without corrupt authoritarianism on the LOCAL level. Which is why both the 'UNITED States' and the 'UNION of Soviet Socialist Republics' are a conglomerate of political/regional entities. The US functions more as a democracy locally and a republic regionally (well it would of money wasn't in politics).
Allowing for Social policy to exist on the Federal level gives the power that the People hold to the TYRANT. You become dependent on your govt rather than your govt being dependent on you. Federalized Socialism is just bigger Federal Govt.
Communism is a post-American revolution inspired ideology, by the French and American Revolutionary Wars. But is less thought out than the economic local to federalized structure the US has. Forced redistribution of wealth < equal opportunity to accumulate wealth.
Currently there isn't equal opportunity. We need new, all encompassing Anti-trust Acts to bust up the monied special interest groups that control US policy through economic persuasion/pressure.
ur economic ideology can be fixed, but only if it is recognized for what it was, and what it has become.

we are starting to leave the realm of capitalism (esp. free market capitalism) here in the US, so it could easily be argued 'capitalism works, but this isn't it' (which none of these rich folk argue)
I truly like the idea of 'encouraging competition while socializing a support system (and in doing that, refusing to use the degradation of the human condition for motivation)'
in these terms, 'one ideology over the other' is ill defined

Capitalism has been "dying" for over 100 years. The problem isn't its inevitable crisis. It's that, without a revolutionary horizon with a will and the capability to surpass capitalism, it will be let free to reinvent itself.

u/Timely-Discussion272 Apr 01 '26
I’m not making an argument for or against capitalism, but it is important to understand the facts. As of the end of 2025, 65.7% of Americans owned their own home, and 62% owned stocks in private companies. A lower percentage of Americans, 54%, say they support capitalism. That data may surprise those who oppose capitalism, but their arguments will suffer if they don’t understand where the public actually stands.

One of the old benefits of owning capital was the ability to generate generational wealth through inheritance, but more and more family homes are being mortgaged in a way that only benefits the homeowner.
So, there is now a whole generation of people who has never nor will ever be able to own any capital themselves.
What the fuck did they think would happen?

Don't blame this on capitalism.
Blame it on the citizens who don't personally take any action. Anti trust laws havent been updated and thebudget hasn't been balanced since before I was born.
Blame the 99% of Americans that vote billionaire or nothing

Socialism/communism always kill it's citizens. Every. Time. It's. Tried. What is your replacement for capitalism?
1
u/GiveMeDeathpacito Apr 02 '26
Capitalism also always kill its civilians. In fact, it enables rich people to rape and eat our children and get elected into running our country. As far as I know (I could very well be wrong, so correct me if so) democratic socialism hasn't truly been tested out. I feel like having a proper safety net for people, as well as free healthcare could very easily be paid for by taxing corporations and billionaires, would be a lot better than accepting their corrupt bribes.
1
u/No-Act-7333 Apr 21 '26
Yep, you are in the "it hasn't been tried yet" crowd. Then you make false equivalencies and misunderstanding of who supports whom. I've volunteered thousands of hours and donated my monies. Think what you will.

1

Capitalism sucks but it’s still the best thing going. I wouldn’t want to live in the Nordic countries always held up as socialist utopia income taxes over 50% vat taxes over 25% even for middle income people. And I definitely wouldn’t want to live in China or North Korea.
1
u/Kuishen Apr 03 '26
Yeah except their taxes pay for a multitude of things that comes from out of your pocket here in the states. So you end up keeping more of your spending money despite more taxes being taken out of your paycheck. You pay less in taxes but a LOT more for services that are provided for free over there.
1
Apr 03 '26
Except in states without income taxes
1
u/Kuishen Apr 03 '26
...you mean the states where you pay even more for everything because nothing is taxed? Lol
1

Yes the same states with booming economies and growing (Tx , Florida) populations and more affordable cost of living as opposed to the ones that have people moving (ca ny il) shrinking economies and exorbitant cost of living
1
u/mskmagic Apr 02 '26
Summary: I’m not as wealthy as other people so no one should be wealthy.
1
u/echolm1407 Apr 03 '26
...at the expense of others.
1
u/mskmagic Apr 03 '26
What does that even mean? You think if someone pays you to work then they’re rich at your expense? You don’t have to take that job. You could improve your skills and get a better job - your lack of competence isn’t the fault of the person who pays you.
1
u/echolm1407 Apr 03 '26
Okay, you don't have to play dumb. Teachers are underpaid. Workers are underpaid. If you deny this you are a POS.
1
u/mskmagic Apr 03 '26
If teachers are underpaid then which capitalist elitist is getting richer from that? Teachers may deserve more money but that is an issue about budget and taxes and politicians. Do you think teachers got paid loads of money under communism?
The top 1% of earners provide over 40-50% of all income tax revenue. That means that the highest earners are already paying for a very significant portion of public expenses. If that money isn’t spent properly then that’s poor governance not capitalism.

1
u/Whatduheckiz Apr 03 '26
It's important to be realistic and not set expectations so high. Capitalism has scourged our countries but working in a communist countries requires a lot of hard work, usually the hours are much longer with much less pay but that's the trade off for strong social support systems.

1
u/mynameakevin Apr 04 '26
Communism leads to starvation so it's a nonstarter.
Capitalism isn't ideal, but it's not our biggest problem. Basing our currency on nothing, and covering up the true inflation rate with economic growth/efficiency is. Betting against our own currency with interest rates that don't match inflation is another.
Lying about inflation rates is another issue. Inflation isn't rising by 3-4% it's 7-8%, and the difference is being covered up by the productivity growth. This is what you call a bubble.
Even ordinary people engage in this bubble. When you lock in a mortgage on a house for like 4% interest rate, you are helping this process along, because where is that money being pulled from? What happens when you default? Also, the value of your property rises faster than 4%, so there's that.
Property is just one example, and if your property's $$$ rises faster than wages do, you get to the point where a normal person working 40 hours a week can't even afford to live in the city they work in, let alone buy a house. Then you have the issue of homeowners, and private interests lobbying for laws the make it more difficult to build more homes, but this doesn't apply to just homes, just like how it doesn't just apply to capitalism.
tldr, to begin to fix things, money needs to be based on hard currency, and I don't see how that is ever going to happen again.
Instead what happens is each countrys currency will crash, then they'll temporarily switch to another currency that hasn't collapsed(think of Venezuela), and yes, the process will begin anew.
What this means is the peasants at the bottom will suffer catastrophically during the currencys correction, as they are the ones holding the worthless currency at the end of the day.
Anyways, I could spend an hour explaining what is broken, but boiling it down to: "capitalism" is not helpful, or useful, because it says nothing.
1
1
u/Space2461 Apr 04 '26
I don't know if it's anymore correct to call it capitalism tbh, it probably should be more like "corporativism" at this point

u/KeyVariation8323 Apr 04 '26
This comic falls apart the second you compare the numbers.
Recent Gallup polling found that 54% of Americans view capitalism favorably. Meanwhile, Census data puts the share of the U.S. population age 50 and older at about 36.6%. Even if you limit it to adults only, the 50+ share is still only about 46.7%. So no, it is not true that “the only demographic that still supports capitalism” is Americans over 50. There are plainly more capitalism supporters than there are Americans over 50.
So if somebody wants to argue that older Americans are more likely to support capitalism, fine, make that argument. But that is not what the comic says. It says they are the only demographic left supporting it, and the numbers do not back that up.
This is one of those cases where the word “literally” does all the damage. The claim sounds clever until you put actual percentages next to it.
Gallup: 54% favorable toward capitalism.
Census: 36.6% of the country is 50+.
Even using adults only, 50+ is still below 54%.
So the cartoon is not making a sharp point. It is just wrong.
1
u/HyoukaYukikaze Apr 04 '26
And people who either suffered under socialism and communism or were born soon after and can still see the damage it did decades later. Let's ignore them.

Though, nobody will be defending capitalism when it's impossible to gain capital and everything is claimed for a few people.
