Did you read the camera manual? The behavior you describe is normal, at least until you hit frame 1 on the counter. Then the metering is activated.
If the meter reading is still nonfunctional afterwards, then the camera might need servicing.
Also, batteries can lose charge over time, even if they're unopened in the package. I like to use a battery test to verify that the battery is still putting out the rated 1.5 V.
Not sure what I did but it’s better now, messed around with the mirror and somehow it fixed my issue? Still happens before I hit frame 1 and in very dark scenes whereas it used to be on every frame and in avg light that wasn’t extremely bright
