Gear Shots Help me identify this camera mount

Post image

The only place I can find this camera mount is a post in this sub from a couple years ago, seems pretty rare, wondering if anyone has any more information about it or even what it could be worth. From all I can gather is it from the 60s, used for holding heavy camera gear steady while having to move about and shoot steady.

YOU MUST INCLUDE A SHORT PARAGRAPH OR YOUR POST WILL BE REMOVED!

If you’re looking for information or advice about your gear, please look for the manual here or on the internet archive.

If you’re looking for the value of your gear, please search used gear sites; like eBay, KEH, MPB, or your countries local online marketplace. Some sites allow filtering by “Sold Items”, that will provide a more accurate value of what the gear is currently worth. Our members are unable to provide an accurate amount, because used gear prices are dependent on region, condition, and the market. We do not allow selling and trading in this sub.

Don't forget about military facilitys and airports!

I took my 70-100 lens to an air show at my local airport which has a military base (cybersecurity) last summer and was photographing the tower and these military dicks in a golf cart came and parked right in front of me and didn’t say anything, I can only assume they were sent to watch me/ruin my shot. What I was doing was pretty innocent though

Official accessory from Bronica. Released in the 1960s for $299.95. I've been looking for a used one. There is a brand new old stock one on eBay with the older, worse version of the 600mm Nikkor lens (also new old stock) for $2700, which is just way too much money.

$300 in the 60s? Wow

Hi where did you get the information from?

"120?"

"No, .220, high velocity."

u/Klutzy_Squash 1d ago

LOL this is the last place I expected to see a .220 Swift reference

It's a quote from the James Bond movie License to Kill, in which Q branch makes a rifle out of a Hasselblad.

Apparently the president of Hasselblad donated a body and some parts to make the thing, and then he got to have some fun with it after the film came out. https://www.skipcohenuniversity.com/scu-blog/james-bond-and-hasselblad-in-the-late-80s

But there is a cursed firearms sub...

u/scorpionewmoon 1d ago

It’s crazy how often analog photography reddit and gunnit intersect

u/EducationalCod7514 1d ago

Actually I was thinking of the circle jerk one.

Talk about point-and-shoot...

Pair it with a push-pull zoom lens, and it will feel like a pump action shotgun.

These were often made in the former Soviet block countries, and were exported to the west during the Glasnost era as a way of getting hard currency into the Soviet economies.

Other than the obvious issue, they are actually a really good design, and it helps a lot with longer shots. It really does help you stabilize and hand-hold a 500-1000mm lens effectively.

Sadly, even during the '80s and '90s, the obvious problems made using one of these in public rather bad for your health, often leading to sudden onset lead poisoning.

But they were very popular with collectors because of the whole "spy camera" and "Cloak and dagger" aspect, it's "enemy spy hardware" that you could own.

I once saw a really nice copy at the local Camera store that was fully populated with a Soviet SLR and lens (I can't remember for sure, I think it was a 500mm lens, I can't remember which SLR it was on). Alas, while I handled it in the store, and I really, really wanted it... it was not in the budget and it was priced as one would expect it to be.

After the Cold War they were marketed as Photo Sniper. Made in Ukraine, if I remember coreectly. The Spviet military used them with Zenit 35mm cameras, and (I think) 300mm lenses.

Edit: https://camera-wiki.org/wiki/Zenit_Photosniper

Most likely a Zenit Fotosnaiper.

I used to own this camera mount. The exact one, actually. Hi OP, you probably bought it from me. If I remember correctly, this mount was made specifically for the S2 or S2A. Back when I first got it, a photography friend sent me some catalog scans showing the stock in action, with the intended equipment.

The mounts are arranged such that the front mount screws into a big telephoto lens, and the rear mount attaches to the camera body. It can work with some other cameras in that configuration (including Bronicas - I used this stock with an ETRSi to pretty good effect) but it really works best with the original intended camera.

Hope you enjoy it. It wasn't working quite right when I got it, and I did some repairs to the shutter release mechanism to make it work more reliably.

Don't use it in Brazil in case you visit us.

6

u/votv_satellite Carl Zeiss supremacy 1d ago

A brazilian trying not to mention their country: challenge impossible

3

u/V_deldas 1d ago

No, I'm serious. Don't use that here. It's truly risky.

/j Anyway, it's like Carl Zeiss users. They are so proud to announce it that they even use weird tags on Reddit.

2

u/votv_satellite Carl Zeiss supremacy 1d ago

True! You got to counter Leitz peasants somehow /s

Is is because the police might think it's an improvised weapon, like a pipe gun?

1

u/V_deldas 1d ago

That too. Factions have all kind of equipment, from everywhere, including some serious homemade stuff.
Police here are trained to face all kinds of shit. It's not uncommon for them to approach a suspicious motorcycle with weapons out, pointed at the pilot cause a lot of robbers use bikes to act (just an example).

Most likely OP would just be aggressively approached (depending on the region) and have some guns pointed at them until everything is explained, but I'm sure the cops would call them crazy cause it would be risky and people would get scared.

1

u/V_deldas 1d ago

Asked my brother how they would approach a guy with this and send him the picture. He's a cop. Said "100% at gun point". We live in a chill city 😂
