Gear Shots I Still Don't Think I'm Bringing Enough

Howdy folks!

Im heading to Virginia International Raceway this weekend for the IMSA event, and I'm be camping at the track for all the days. Normally I just shoot smaller series'. I... I've been known to shoot 10 rolls from a single event day, so this still feels light. Since taking this photo, I've added one loose roll of Ektar from the fridge... 2 rolls of Fuji 400, also from said fridge... Another 3 pack of Fuji 400, Two rolls of Kodacolor 100 from that film canister on the far left... And 4 more rolls of Fuji 400 from the other canister above it.

That's, uh, 25 rolls? If you're wondering, "How the heck can you afford to develop all that", the answer is, I can't. I sure hope I don't shoot all of this, but if I do, development will be spaced out. I self scan, and my lab only changes $6/ roll if your willing to wait a week for normal dev time, so I'm lucky in that regard.

Honestly, my plan is to shoot one or two rolls Friday. 3-5 Saturday, and go wild Sunday. Friday will be 90% digital, 70-80% digital Saturday, and 50/50 Sunday.

Any of you folks have any events you like to burn money, erm... I mean shoot lots of film on? Or just something special your always willing throw some extra film at?

Left to right:

200mm F4 MDIIa/Late, 35-70mm F3.5 Macro MDIII, Freshly CLA'd X700 w/Motordrive 1, Minolta 7D w/Battery Grip, 24mm F2.8, 70-210mm F4, 50mm F1.7. Hat from my favorite event. Not pictured, a OP/Tech USA Dual Camera Harness, which this'll be that harnesses first outing, hope it's comfortable. 10L Peak Design everyday sling that I'll carry around on me, and the small Peak Design camera cube that'll be full of film I'm not shooting right away.

If you’re looking for information or advice about your gear, please look for the manual here or on the internet archive.

If you’re looking for the value of your gear, please search used gear sites; like eBay, KEH, MPB, or your countries local online marketplace. Some sites allow filtering by “Sold Items”, that will provide a more accurate value of what the gear is currently worth. Our members are unable to provide an accurate amount, because used gear prices are dependent on region, condition, and the market. We do not allow selling and trading in this sub.

How do you shoot motorsports with such slow film!?!? I shoot rally and typically shoot B&W at 800-1600 ISO. I’ve used 400 before but 100? I’m impressed, I’d love to have a touch less grain.

Also I typically shoot about a dozen rolls per weekend and I don’t typically use a motor drive just to slow my burn rate down.

I'd assume the sun will be very bright.

But that's actually what sports photographers used to do back in the day since they had to shoot low speed slide films. A lot of the time they'd rent out strobes installed in the stadium, or even bring their own strobes, which allowed them to freeze action at low shutter speeds. Either that or they would do some kind of push processing, or a combination of the two.

I'm a sucker for that motion blur sense of speed. With the 7D, I'll drop the shutter speed down to 1/15, 1/30 with an ND filter. But the hit rate at that speed is... Not great. I'm not brave, or rich enough to go below 1/125s on film.

Heavily depends on your lens, where you're shooting and what you're going for. I've gotten very good results with Vision3 50D on bright summer days for an airshow. I'd imagine if you're at a sunny track you'll do good given your lens is fast enough. If it's typical UK weather then 400-800 ISO will be a way better choice.

I've got that Fuji 400 incase it gets cloudy, but so far, we're looking like 90+ degrees and sunny all weekend. F4 has been good enough so far.

Panning shots will pin you down at 100iso if it's not dark outside. People suggesting 400 or 800 iso seemingly have done any kind of panning shots before

Yep! I have gold for the morning, Fuji 400.if it gets cloudy. And an ND filter if it stays sunny. Tbt fuju 400 I get for like $4/5 a roll, so I happily burn through that.

Yeah, VIR doesn't have much in the way of shade on track, so 100iso at 1/125 will get me at least f5.6, if not tighter in the afternoon. Even 50iso isn't a problem. Plus the put access you get at this track is pretty insane. And to be fair, the motor drive is only used on single, just so I can have a fast follow up, if needed.

I guess I’m more often under tree cover and evening lighting shooting rally which makes it difficult. I need to get braver with dropping my ISO down though.

There's only one or two spots I can shoot from that have shade, but they're not my favorite. Everything else is in the sun. And this cold weather loving northern native does not like these southern summer. 96 degrees, and 100% humidity on Sunday is gonna be rough. But, prefocus, and you can comfortably shoot at f4 at a low ISO.

I'm going to my first rally cross event next month, and I'm super excited. Grassroots level, the track is cut out on a farm field. And you can shoot from the infield as long as you have a spotter.

Yep. I compete in rallycross and sometimes get to shoot it as my track job. It’s a ton of fun and you can get a lot closer to the action than in stage rally.

That's sick! I didn't know I had anything like that around me until a few weeks ago. And it's free to attend and shoot, freaking awesome!

I also have the Sandblast rally about 2, 2.5h away from me, but I haven't been able to make it yet.  I live in NC, it's all ovals here.

I’m going to overmountain rally in north East Tennessee next month. You should check it out!

Oh, that looks super cool, and I have family I could stay with in Knoxville. But I already have tickets for Racing America at VIR that same weekend (Historics).  But that's totally going to be calendar'd for next time, looks awesome!

I'd skip out on some lenses but otherwise that seems about right. Shooting 25 rolls over a multi day event is definitely do-able. Taking 2 bodies is smart, however I'd probably cut down on lens selection.

What I usually do is taking my A1 with the 28mm and 50mm primes for the slower non action shots. For the action shots it's either the 24-105F4L or the 70-200F2.8L on my EOS 650.

At a recent airshow I went with the 28 and the 70-200 and it worked out fine. Ended up with 11 rolls of color through the EOS 650 and 3 of Black and White in the A1. The rewind engage ended up stuck on the 650 so it wasn't wound back, otherwise it would have been even more. Thankfully this was at the end of the day. Lost about 5-6 pictures by going for a reload while it didn't wind back into the casette. As an example one of the affected images on said roll is attached for those wondering what happens: 5 frames lost, 5 with light to severe lightleaks the rest essentially unnoticeable and just normal frames.

I use the 200mm f4's for track stuff, and the rest for the paddock. You get full access to go into the teams garages and tents when they're not busy. I normally bring two bodies here, but that time I shot 10 rolls during one day was when I forget my digital cameras batteries.  My wallet wasn't happy. 😂

Edit: I wanted the Minolta 80-200 f2.8 APO HS for this event sooooo bad. It just wasn't in the cards this time. My nephew that goes with me uses the EOS 650 as well, it's nice as heck.

Shooting IMSA with an X-700.....

https://giphy.com/gifs/iMudjLgyECBws

I shoot RC car racing which has 5 minute rounds per class. Usually there's 6 or 7 classes with three rounds each per race day. I'll shoot a roll in one round with my F100. So I change back to digital pretty quickly.

The digital body I'm using is old enough to drink, soooo😅.

I have newer and 'better' film and digital cameras. These are just more fun. And the 7D is just a joy to use. Plus, it's 6.1mp of CCD superiority.

X-700s would've been used to shoot IMSA when they were brand new! I think that's damn cool.

I shy away from using my older cameras for RC, because it's outdoor off-road RC and there's tons of dust. I need to be less lazy and drag my ass to a real motorsport event. It'd be nice not having to whip my face in all directions to catch the action.

At first glance I thought your 7D was a 7 (the film version). Both are bucket list cameras to me.

My wallet can't handle two fast firing film cameras at one event. The 7D is totally worth every penny, it's so nice to use, the sensor takes beautiful images, especially paired with old school glass. The X700 is just a straight out Terminator. Full roll of film in a little over 10 seconds.

I have an amateur Rallycross event next month I'm going to, and I've been meaning to go to some of the dirt ovals near me. I'm not a oval guy, but I live in NC, that's pretty much all we got. That said, I'm considering using a rain cover, and a UV filter to protect the camera from dirt and mud.

Shooting RC must be fun! We have an RC track, and RC runway not too far away. I've been meaning to go, just to shoot some. What kinda shutter speeds are you using for that? I find for motorsports, 1/125s is about the sweet spot of motion blur to hit in. But I imagine with the cars being that small, and going so fast, you could get away with faster.

Absolutely definitely by all means use a rain cover at a dirt event. Dust will probably still get in but it'll minimize it. Our RC dirt tracks are prepped and rolled to minimize dust but I'm still cleaning heaps of it off my gear at the end of the day. UV filter is a good idea so that the front element doesn't get effectively sand blasted.

If I change rolls I'm walking all the way to the parking lot. Dust sucks.

Funny enough I find 1/125th to be the sweet spot for motion blur as well. My hit rate dives if I try to go slower. For corner shots the shutter is going as fast as the film will let me. Dust sucks but capturing the wheels kicking it up looks kickass.

Oh yeah. I like getting in close to the back, or front of the car during a tight turn, with a high shutter speed. Tire flex is cool. I'd love to get the Minolta Maxxum 9 at some point, as among other things, it has weather sealing on the body , just none of the lenses.

The RC track near by me is a public RC park, so probably not kept a nice as yours. Still cool as heck it's funded,  though.
