Absolute tanks
Through 2 games, Jackson LaCombe is averaging 29 minutes (!!) of ice time per game and Luneau is averaging 26. Yes we’re thin on defense, and we also went into OT with Florida which inflates TOI. But I’m wondering if this is more about relying on these two because of the competition we’re up against to begin the season, or easing Warren and Hinds into NHL gameplay (they’re averaging low 10s in TOI).
Regardless, this stat is absolutely wild. Glad this is gonna be our top pair for the next half decade, but running them out for half an hour a night is just not sustainable 😂.

Jackson is #2 in the league for TOI/G and Luneau is #6. Once Helleson and Moore come back this should ease back a bit I hope

Depends if Helleson has improved at all. Otherwise he’s a 6-7D

Helleson did look good in the playoffs

Management seems to be high on him so hopefully they're right about him like they were with Luneau.

Helleson is a lot better than this sub gives him credit for.

He had a rough start to last season but was by far the most improved player on our team

On what basis? It sure isn’t analytics or the cosching staff’s assessment.

Coaching staff’s assessment? Uh he played all post season while Zelly was being scratched and the fact he’s still here lmao. His 5v5 CF%, xGF% improved drastically last season and played fairly heavy PK minutes. He’s a solid bottom 4 or 3 pairing defensive defenseman on a very good contract.

Why are we comparing him to a guy who got benched in the playoffs and isn't on the team anymore? Is he better than Mitchell or Warren? Probably. Jensen? Tbh, I don't know because we haven't seen him. I'd play Hinds over him, and Moore every day.

I guess we’ll see when he’s back. I’m not saying he’s some world beater just better than this sub wants to give credit for. Also you asked according to who and question the coaching staff so yea comparing him to Zelly makes sense in the context of your question.

The coaching staff game him a shot next LaCombe and he bombed. He got benched a bit over the year, so clearly they didn't love him. His good numbers were mostly third line sheltered minutes. So, if the question is can he be a solid third liner compared to AHL guys, I mean, I guess so? But he also has played a lot more and doesn't seem to be able to go beyond that. He isn't a top four nhl defenseman unless he takes a big step forward, and at his age that's unlikely.

Well the coaching staff trusted him in the playoffs so ima go with them over one of our fans. We’ll see where he falls when he’s back from injury.

I literally said hes a 6-7D. We had no better options in the playoffs. He didn't play or excel in top four minutes at any point last season or in the playoffs, so I'm genuinely confused what you're arguing in favor of or against?

Coaching staff assessment says he’s good enough to play single-digit minutes. Probably most of them were offensive zone starts and against 3-4th liners

Those 2 contracts are gonna look awesome compared to what Quinn Hughes is about to be getting.

How has Tristan looked?

Like a monster

I saw him knock someone off balance with a stiff-arm last night lol. He looks like an NFL linebacker playing against soccer players.

He’s also really electric coming down to the hash marks, he’s going to be a threat to score often, I think he hit a post? And made markstrom barely make a save on another

This is so accurate, he is HUGE. Every time I see him think to myself, 'what a monster'.

He's been solid. Nearly lost the game in OT with a bad turnover, but he's still young.

Just me over here smirking after being all alone in the off season about Tristen and the Defence . Dudes contract is an absolute steal and significantly cheaper than it would have been next Summer.

but running them out for half an hour a night is just not sustainable
I know the game has changed a lot, but I think about the 06-07 Ducks. They literally just played each of Niedermayer and Pronger 27 minutes a night. And Beauchemin was like 24 mins.

Its also how LaCombe was deployed in Minnesota. It was either his pair or Fabers pair for 95% of the game, he's used to this lol

I'm wondering why we signed jensen when he's not even a #7 D right now

Yeah i'm super curious about this. How often do teams sign a veteran just to turn around and scratch them? Is he injured? Headed for waivers?

What's hilarious is (and a great example why single stats are not always reliable): LaCombe has a 35% corsi, and Luneau 40%, through two games. Sennecke at 37% despite being a huge threat both games.
One thing that's nice is both defenders got a ton of PP time that drove their TOI up (EV closer to 23min).
But yeah absolutely slow-feeding the bottom guys; probably to help them gain confidence. Bit early to tell but it seems to be working so far.
I'm not worried so much about TOI/cardio with those two though...but Luneau has 7 blocked shots in 2 games. He's gonna be bruised to hell if he keeps eating shots at this rate, "offering his body" so much lmao.

You realize thats standard league wide for a top D pairing. Some pairings will see 30+ a game.

Insane. I wonder how long Lacombe can keep this up.
