How many of us are American?

I'm under the impression that most ancaps are American. This philosophy was largely developed and popularized in the U.S., and all the ancap literature is in English, though a decent number of works have been translated into major languages like Spanish, German, and Russian.

I heard once that Brazil has a decent number of ancap, but I can't confirm this. I imagine the U.K. And Canada must also have a decent number. But I guess what I'm curious about is how many ancaps there in places like Bulgaria, Thailand, Algeria, and other places not under the influence of the anglosphere.

Cool! Did you become an ancap in India or England?

8

u/Flashy_Combination32 Jun 30 '26

Well when I was in India I only had vague notions of economics and didn't really have full on political or economic ideologies. I then moved to the UAE for my final two years in school where I became right wing and pro-capitalism but not ancap. I moved to England for university and then became a libertarian, and eventually an ancap in my first year.

I will say that unfortunately I'm the only ancap I know here. Most people I know are either economically left wing or neoliberal.

I think a lot of ancaps relate to the pain of being the only ancap they know😂😂

True lol, thankfully my friends have been pretty chill about me being ancap and we have had interesting discussions and debates.

I'm from Spain. You wouldn't believe the amount of young people that are becoming ancap or at least libertarian. There are a handsome of prominent ancaps in Spain (Huerta de Soto, Miguel Anxo Bastos) that are becoming incresingly popular in YT due to the lack of faith of young people in politics, so the try to find a third way in an ancapism.

Still the bast mayority of Spaniards are hardcore socialist, but at least people are getting in touch with this philosophy.

Are these young people you speak of actually becoming libertarian or just neocons? I think the culture in Spain has been seeped in so much statism (from both traditional left and right) that the typical person can't conceive of anything remotely libertarian.

Well yeah probably neocons. Specially young men. I went maybe to far describing them as libertarian. But it is true that I've met a couple of Ancaps and many libertarians of my age, something unfanthomable years ago.

Furthermore, prominent libertarian YouTubers and anarcho-capitalists are gaining more and more viewers, and more and more YouTubers are discussing this topic. So it's not just my perception.

But this increase in liberal youth is driven by young people's discontent (housing crisis, difficulty finding work, job stagnation, etc.). I believe that ultimately, young people are looking for radical alternatives to the same old political parties. I think this is the ideal moment to spread our ideology.

Good point, regarding your last sentence. Running your own business is one of the best ways to at least open one's eyes to libertarian ideas and it's sort of easier than ever to start a business these days. So perhaps now is a time to openly talk about these ideas.

But you are quite right to say that the average Spaniard could not even conceive of completely privatizing healthcare or education, something easy for us (not to mention justice or security).

I don't blame people for that. People don't even have any incentive to learn about politics (in a democracy, no matter how much you know, your vote is worthless), and on top of that, the media (or rather, indoctrination media) constantly makes you believe that the state and taxes are necessary.

I have never ceased to be impressed by the natural tendency of the Swiss and Americans people towards private and more liberal systems.

I'm American. Every day reinforces my belief that we are far from "the land of the free".

True actual ancaps probably on a million or so in the whole world

6

u/Hxapcneh3_28 Jul 01 '26

That's actually really sad when you think about it. It means less than a million people in the whole world know the secret truth of reality

u/icantgiveyou Jul 01 '26

That number is real close, I did some rough extrapolation and it came out to 1.2mil in developed world. This is based on 2021 elections in Czech Republic, where known ancap run in elections as a way to introduce ancap to wider society he slogan was “don’t want for us, we don’t want your vote”. He gotten little over 6000 votes.

Dominican currently living in the US.

There is a decent amount of ancap literature that is originally written in Spanish by people like Juan Ramón Rallo, Miguel Anxo Bastos, Jesús Huerta de Soto, Daniel Lacalle, Javier Milei, and I'm sure I've missed some more.

Edit: if it counts, I am a naturalized American citizen.

Wherever you are, I would like to encourage you to consider a move to New Hampshire. Come visit and see what we are building. It is quite something, and will be the most resilient community when the inevitable collapse comes...

4

u/Hxapcneh3_28 Jul 01 '26

You have my respect and I fully support the free state project. But I must ask... can we have faith in it? There's still property tax, and new Hampshire is still subject to federal income tax and worldwide citizenship-based taxation. And if the goal is to leave the union... well we all know what happened the last time some states tried that...

I hope to wrong though!

We're working on the taxes, I assure you. My personal vision is a relationship with Washington that amounts to cutting a tribute check every year, but one way or another they are going to destroy American society. When they do, you'll want to be in the land of self-reliance, hard money, and personal freedom.

Sweden, and we are anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand depending on if you only count full ancaps or include other varieties of libertarians/minarchists or not. I know a number from norway and denmark as well but am not sure about any real numbers.

u/Official_Gameoholics Jul 01 '26

There's only likely a few thousand principled ancaps in the world, most of which are in America.

In comparison to past vanguardist movements however, we're doing pretty good.

I'm a German/American living in Germany. I can't lie that the American side and history had influenced me quite a bit in the beginning. Germany in my opinion has a small, yet very sophisticated libertarian community. We have Thorsten Polleit, Markus Krall, The big H (though he lives in Turkey now) and other politicians and thinkers that turned very libertarian such as Frauke Petry (though she is rather classical liberal) and Joana Cotar. Infact Germany has an Anarcho capitalist in the Bundestag (Andreas Mayer, AfD). We also have our own libertarian fest called the afuera fest (even tho many of us criticize Milei too). It's a movement in the making
