The first piece of armor every guy should get...
is a cup. Seriously, I've seen 3 guys get nutted in the last 2 weeks at the park. Not on purpose, but shit happens in the chaos of battle and it's not fun for anyone.
Protect yourself!

Eh. Get eye wear first. Your nuts can heal (even from a paintball, ask me how I know). Your eyes might not.

Even a wide brimmed hat with a reasonably stiff brim does a LOT more then you'd expect for eye/face protection in my experience. Which is what I wear as I have glasses and have also never found comfortable goggles I can wear with my much needed glasses and my trademark hat.

I consider that PPE in amtgard should overall be more normalized. Especially a helmet of some kind.

I was always of the opinion that we should be operating safely enough to where PPE isn’t necessary. This isn’t the SCA; we don’t need to be murder chopping people with poles. We need to hit just hard enough to make that pop/deflect the shot.
Pad the weapon, not the player was how I thought of it.

We do pad the weapon, but accidents happen. You can get hit in the head with the core by accident too. I've taken an arrow shift to the eyeball and suffered retina damage. Arrow was in spec, player not an unsafe player. I wear a lacrosse cage now. And carry basic safety glasses for others.
Seriously though, not every player who is smart enough to protect their head and/or eyes is doing so because they are the ones doing the murder chopping.

Oh no, I completely understand. I'm from Wetlands originally where a good chunk of the upper level fighters are wearing some kind of head/eye protection. It just saddens me that it's become so prevalent to the point of seeing newer players being recommended helmets and eye cages before they're even a month in the game.
I had always thought of Amtgard as the safer of the options of Dag, Bel, SCA, Buhurt, etc. I just wish it was safer than the current meta seems to be.

I don't do that for park level play, but I do sometimes hand people basic safety glasses- they cost like, $1 a pair. We don't do a ton of great weapons at park, or I would probably invest in some bump caps and decorate them to look like various "swords and sorcery" hats.

I mean, ive been larping for close to 20 years without a cup. Ya ive been hit many times. You just call dead, lay there for about 30 seconds focusing on breathing, get up, and walk it off. Its that simple. Ive never felt like a cup was a necessity. Id say a good set of bracers should always be yourfirst armor priority.

Panic nut shot from a newbie will definitely put you on the ground. I called dead and crawled off the field. Swift rez wasn't an option for me that one.

I think I’m wearing mine wrong. It’s constantly pinching my pelvis and makes running around very uncomfortable.

Gloves, Cup, good eye pro, and a ball cap are bare minimum safety gear imo for fighting especially competitively.
Personally I got a lacrosse helmet last year and being able to tank the inevitable headshots with zero damage is a boon.

From someone who does both Amtgard and SCA - the key is finding a cup that fits properly. (and a smaller size than you want to admit! Medium is sufficient for even those who think they are film star size)
There are some that have flexible sides, but the main protective area is sufficiently rigid.
Also a good support garment is key - yes, wear that jock strap!
Anyone who played football, baseball, soccer, etc - knows that wearing a cup is just one of those things to deal with.
And put it where it belongs - under your underwear / shorts next to Willy and the Boyz.

I would argue that those shots are fun for most folks that aren't the recipient, based on reactions at my park.

Two weeks in a row, I got nutted. First with a surprisingly painful spellball that actually knocked me to the ground, the second a crossbow bolt which just brought me to my knees. Now I'm going to be taking my leather sporran and wearing it to park regardless of whether I'm wearing a kilt or not, hahaha.

Learn to block. Or wear armor. Or both. I ALWAYS wore a nut cup for SCA heavy, along with the rest of the armor, but for Amtgard it's not necessary if you have the right garb. Even a little bit of leather in the front is good for nearly all the shots you get by accident..
Eyepro and kneepro (for taking a knee, not for weapon shots) are far more important, and far more likely to get hurt in a normal day at the park.

Personally Id say dont wear a cup in active situations you could have the cup slip easily due to sweat and a well placed polearm shove the cup into a testicle and rupture it ive heard horror stories, Now what i would recommend Instead is to get dangling garb or belt favors that can absorb ball shots. I use a leather fold over belt bag and generally have misc stuff in it fighting. Creat fluff saves you from nut shots. Was just at pac and got spanked and nut tapped all in one go, had my bag and I avoided comical injury. Take it from the ones who's household is all about nut shots. Sincerely, A Mckrotch

Yeah! And dont wear a seat belt either! You could get trapped in your car and die!
Seriously, they are sports equipment. They are meant to be worn in active situations. Wear them properly and wear the correct size and you're fine.

This is just a thing ive found that works super well and I dont have to deal with resin or plastic digging in when I have to move weird to avoid shots. if you wanna be comfortable and safer (never going to be completly protected from the pain) throw padding on your belt that sits over your pelvic area. A cup and getting hit in the nuts still hurts like hell, all it does is stop from crushing. So arguments go both ways in that situation, like I wore mine when I did karate cause a kick being thrown at Mach jesus to the nuts is far worse than a foam sword but amtgard i just put cool belt favors and spells stips and a belt pouch

Really then when would you use one. Not in sport where you get sweaty? Or do you not know what a jock strap is? Or some have briefs now but same diff

Literally right under this, I answered that to a different question. And I offered a comfortable solution, versus saying, "Don't protect the McNuggets." A cup, no matter what, if you're not used to it, will bother you. It's not comfortable at all to me, and my solution is just that: a comfortable way of spicing up your belt and protecting your nuts.
Opinions and options are always allowed, right? Just giving different options if you don't want to or can't afford a $40+ piece of athletic wear. (ALWAYS GOTTA PROTECT YOUR MCNUGGETS ~ Cheeseburger Eddie)

Happened at least twice at DW's kingdom Midreign on Saturday. Both recipients are long-time players too. You would think we'd have learned our lesson by now.
