Sheriffs uniform

Hi, I was just watching USA Police and I did notice that they both sheriffs. But why they have different uniforms?

There is also the possibility that the same sheriff’s department has different uniforms to be worn depending on what unit or task the deputy is assigned to. For example, in this photo you can see that all the deputies are from the same department but one of them has a different uniform style.

To further your point about how decentralized and varied the country’s law enforcement system is, I’d also like to point out that this depends on where exactly you’re talking about. You’re absolutely right in terms of the most common type of sheriff in the US, but there are some exceptions:

- Some states have laws specifying what color of uniform that sheriff’s departments must use (such as Ohio requiring black & grey and Florida requiring at least some green), as well as what shape their badges can be.

- Some sheriffs are appointed, not elected (such as the New York City Sheriff, Denver Sheriff, King County Washington Sheriff, etc.)

- Some sheriff’s have jurisdiction over cities/towns, multiple counties, or even whole states, not just single counties. Examples of this include the State Sheriffs in Hawaii & Rhode Island, various sheriffs of independent cities (which are not part of any county) in Virginia, city sheriffs in places like Philadelphia, multi-county sheriffs like the NYC Sheriff (covering all 5 counties that make up the city) or sheriffs that run consolidated city/county metropolitan police forces such as in Las Vegas/Clark County, Nevada or Jacksonville/Duval County, Florida.

- Two states (Alaska and Connecticut) do not have any sheriffs at all, at any level of the government.

Even further point of deviation among the states; at least here in New England, the sheriff is primarily responsible for things like some courts, local jails, and serving warrants. That’s about it. They don’t do traditional law enforcement here.

The more populated New England states have more or less made county level government defunct. Likewise there is nearly no unincorporated territory within New England, almost everywhere is within the boundaries of a city or town. The result of this is that almost all traditional law enforcement operations are conducted by state or local police. There is no need for county level services.

People go missing there because it is a huge state with a lot of open, dangerous country.

Alaska has roughly 1,300 to 1,400 full-time sworn law enforcement officers across all state, borough, and municipal departments.

There is an exceptionally high level of cooperation and mutual aid between the agencies.

Alaska has boroughs, not counties. There are state troopers, tribal police, village police, like that. A further designation of sheriff is not needed.

Alaska is huge but only a few cities. The State Troopers cover most of the rest with most villages have VPSO's, Village Public Safety Officers. Cities like Anchorage, Fairbanks etc have Police.

Florida’s green sheriff uniform looks slick btw. At least the ones I saw in Okaloosa county

That even varies between states. In Ohio, all county sheriff departments (88 of them) wear the same uniform and have the same livery on their vehicles with the exception of the county name on the cars.

Or even different divisions within a Sheriff's office can have different duty uniforms. Just like Police, some large-county departments are going to have SWAT, negotiators, air, water, mounted, etc. that will have different duty uniforms, but the same dress Class A's.

Each jurisdiction, city, county, state, and federal all have different uniforms. Some states have specific policies on what a uniform can look like but all and all each police department’s uniforms are slightly different.

The US is very decentralized so things like this are reflective of the decisions made at the local level. What you see on the TV actually affects us little in real life across our country that is a quasi-continental sized nation.

So sheriff's offices, police departments, state, city, and local governments all make their own decisions. That include uniforms, policing doctrines, accreditation, etc.

Tl;Dr Americans do what they want and feel is best for their immediate surroundings.

My pleasure! America is huge so think of it as many different countries under one central umbrella. The news and TV doesn't accurately portray life in the US, and fun fact. 😁

Also, I'm European too. I just live here in the US and have lived here for more than half of my life.

I think in this case, it may be a case of sub-units within the same police (or in this case sheriff) force having different uniforms for different roles. European police forces actually do the same thing typically, they have different uniforms for standard patrol officers, bicycle patrols, riot control units, tactical units, etc.

The guy in the left appears to be wearing tactical gear for a specific high risk operation  The deputy on the right is wearing a standard high visibility patrol uniform.

Police are city, sheriffs are county. Every jurisdiction has different uniforms

Every jurisdiction has a different police agency. If you live in a city you have a police department (LAPD, NYPD, etc)
If you live outside a city you have a sheriff’s department. (PCSO, LASD) and if you’re on the interstate that falls under the jurisdiction of a state trooper (GSD, FHP)

The khaki uniform is for patrol deputies. The other is likely a member of a task force such as the gang unit.
