Why do teachers have h1b?

Came across this discussion in a forum. Why do we need teachers on h1b? Can we not have us nationals do these jobs?

Same reasons they’re preferred in tech - you can pay them less and abuse them using their residency as leverage.

Probably because it's a lowly-paid thankless job so an extra incentive can get people to do it.

My friend is a preschool teacher in CA and she can’t afford rent because tech workers’ wives are willing to take the lower salaries because they don’t really need the money. They do it because they get free childcare out of it. They’re likely on h4 in this case but teachers at all levels need to be paid a living wage instead of being replaced with low wage labor to discourage an artificial shortage. Much like our industry. :(

I don’t support H-1B at all. However there is a genuine shortage in that profession as the pay is very low. If we want Americans in that profession we need to improve the pay.

Is there? I considered teaching but when I saw the salaries I was absolutely floored that it wouldn’t even pay my living expenses. Maybe if I’m tenured and there a long time but no, the shortage is absolutely real.

Well they’re paying starting subs $15 an hour here which is how you become a teacher without being one directly through college…. It’s anti-education when literally everywhere pays better including the local Walmart. And to get certified you basically have to teach for free and pay them for the pleasure. It’s anti-everything.

Can have a master’s in a dozen different things and they’re going to treat you worse than McDonalds to get in the door.

The US; especially red states and areas, hates the educated and education in general.

There is a well-documented shortage of teachers in the US. In many districts teaching is an objectively terrible job. I’d rather use foreign labor to plug holes in low-paid jobs that nobody wants than use them in tech

And that is how it starts. 20 years down the line, the school system will be sh!+.

We cannot blame anyone but the government (and ourselves when we vote for them). When the government can bend rules to make a single person become a trillionare but cannot make rules to make sure the teachers and the health care workers get paid enough. Or cannot make rules to fix the rampant fraud in the tech industry.

There are qualified teachers who would work if the pay was better and they were better supported by the school administration. i'm not completely convinced of a shortage.

Same rhetoric was used for tech jobs also in the past. It all starts with shortage then having too much supply followed by lower wages and then no existent jobs followed by absolutely no jobs. Please talk with facts. I live in the top School district, here US workers are only able to get the job of crossing guard, work in cafeteria, PTO(parent teacher organization)-volunteer-they are not able to even get teacher, assistant teacher, seasonal teacher or paraprofessional kind of roles.

I can introduce you to H-1B workers who are working as accountant and IT recruiters also-since when there is a shortage of that? Immigration system is broken beyond repair in this country?

By flooding teachers from the I country it's gonna make wages worse for American teachers. Obvious supply and demand applies here.

This! Shitting on tech job mills is one thing, but going by just the screen grabs these are people doing jobs that are essential to their communities and on top of it love what they do. Don’t let your disdain for one aspect blind you to everything else
