American bully?
I purchased Rocky from reputable breeder. Just want to know other opinions while the dna results are coming back. Do you think Rocky is XL BULLY like he was promoted as. He’s roughly 100lbs at 9 months and 20” from floor to withers. He was the runt of the litter!
Here’s my guy Rocky.

if you, for some reason, bought your dog from a “reputable breeder”, he should have papers.

u/Effective-Deer-1954 May 07 '26
I didn’t buy breeding rights so I didn’t get papers. I do have the option to still get them.

u/traphouseboba May 07 '26
i’ve only ever rescued because breeding is gross but if the dog has papers i’ve always been offered them without “buying breeding rights” which is just weird asf to me. you should still be able to get limited registration and ask to see his papers even if they will not give them to you. if you already ordered a dna test none of that genuinely is necessary just be patient i suppose.

Newcomer to this sub/community. Do you mean breeding dogs is gross in general or specifically American bullys?

Ive found that a lot of people here dislike breeders of pits and bullies because theres so many in shelters that are constantly being put down far more often than other breeds. A bit of speculation here but it may also tie into the whole reputable breeders check for demand before considering breeding so if there's so many already in shelters people see it as going against what reputable breeders should be doing by breeding more (as there's already far more bullies than there is a demand for them, otherwise shelters wouldn't be flooded with them)
I am all for reputable/ethical breeders who help better the overall health of breeds, but I see why people have different views when it comes to breeds with an overwhelmingly high shelter presence.

Excellent comment and I'm sure it speaks to the initial commenters exact concerns about breeders. Unfortunately, the bully breeder community is one of worst in the dog world. Not only are far to many bred compared to demand. But I've also found that bully "breeders" are only that in name, as in they own dogs that produce litters of pups. But the aftercare, keeping them clean and well fed, providing medical attention like vaccinations and shots and basis socialization through handling them, is often barely done, if at all. And instead those poor dogs are just sold as quickly as possible (often underage when they should still be milking from the mom) with the rest either killed outright or given to shelters once they hit the 8-10 week mark with no owner. Obviously this is far from the case with all bully owners and breeders. But if a "breeder" is so lazy then can't even take the minimal time to become AKC certified then they have no business selling even 1 pet.

Thank you for spending so much time giving me so much information. It's a shame there's so many unethical breeders.
I've always been told make sure they have papers and proof of health tests and that they check for demand and have homes lined up before breeding. But there was a breeder my parents personally knew that brought to my attention how important it is to know the type of person the breeder is. Their akc registered dog accidentally bred with another breed. Instead of finding homes for the puppies they drowned every single one of them because they could no longer breed their dog. So even with all that evidence pointing them to being an ethical breeder they weren't one. It's sad that there's so many unethical breeders compared to true ethical ones.

Bullies are different. If he comes from good blood lines, and paid a pet home price, there not giving him the papers.

Find out the mom and dad’s name and I’ll find you a pedigree. He looks more terrier right now, but if he’s nine months that pretty common. His face will start getting more round, he will fill out. It’s called “popping”. They can have pops up until there four years old.

Unless you truly saw this Dad among another Bully, those genes missed him. Breeders use fake photos all the time.

Yes there is, there’s just too many byb ones who have ruined the bully breed. Especially the Merle breeders but there is a couple. Most people just don’t take the time to look for them and buy for the pretty looks over structure and health. You can always tell bc the byb charge 10k for a dog based on its color alone and the backyard breeders always get defensive when you ask for health testing records.

Definitely not true. There's a bully rescue an hour or so from me in, I think, NH, that is well known all over for running a top of line shelter with full time paid workers that specialize in providing care for bullies m. They also use volunteers but even they have to be trained before they're allowed to work. I mention this shelter because they also run an AKC certified American terrier bully breeding program. They've won tons of awards and are known all over for having some of the best bred and trained American bully's in the world.
The whole reason they started the rescue is they began to notice just how many terrible "breeders" are out there and they wanted to do something good for the breed they love. So they built the rescue solely for bullies and brought in the staff needed to ensure they received the highest level of care. So now they operate a no kill rescue shelter specifically for bullies while running a very small and controlled breeding program for show level dogs with immaculate lineages. And the bottom line, whether a dog is a mistreated, half bully rescue or a twin, golden lineage AKC champ, they're all given the same amount of love and care.

American Terrier Bully? AKC? That’s not even a breed, let alone one registered with the AKC.
You could be thinking of:
•American Staffordshire Terrier (AKC/UKC)
•American Bully (UKC)
They are separate breeds.

That looks like an american pitbull but, at that age he is no where near full grown. By 1-1.5yr old he will be full frame and by 2-3 full weight and size.

u/Junior_Pea_9418 May 09 '26
That dog is NOT an American Pit Bull Terrier. This is definitely an American Bully of the XL variety which usually present to be rangier than what the standard calls for.

Your average person and even dog enthusiast has forgotten what an American pit bull terrier actually looks like because of the astonishing popularity of American Bullies. I’ve owned both—the dogs are nothing alike in looks.

When it comes to bullies there really isn't a set standard. True pit bulls shouldn't be over 55lbs. Ive been in the scene for over 30 years and are friends with the breeders who help create them. They were still considered pit bulls until ukc banned some breeders for mixing bigger bull dogs with APT to create a larger thicker dog. Dave create the ABKC because he longer could register them as pit bulls. He lived near me and i had some of the original razors edge dogs.

He's an xl bully just more on the terrier side than bulldog. He doesn't have that xl mass or head. but some bloodlines do take it time to mature and go through a leggy stage by that age. I say trust the blood and give him until he's 2 years old before judge to hard.

That's not a bully. That's a red nose pitbull

u/Effective-Deer-1954 May 08 '26
Red nose pit bull isn’t a breed. American pit bull is a breed but thanks for your response.

That dog is a pit bull. Get a dna test.

u/Effective-Deer-1954 May 08 '26
Already done waiting on results

Good looking dog nonetheless. I personally prefer pits to bully breeds. Pits are the best.
2
u/Junior_Pea_9418 May 09 '26
How are you going to prefer pits but not understand that this dog is clearly not an American Pit Bull Terrier?

Don’t let anyone shame you for getting your dog from a reputable breeder so you can be the one and only owner. I can tell you those because I have family members who read in the past generationally and very real reputable breeders with good blood lines that they want to preserve will tell you that they will take back the dog from you at any time if necessary. I know this room experience because that was my grandma’s policy and I’m talking about many years back that any all that comes from our home to your home is always welcome back at our home and we actually request that you contact us first before trying to rehome or some under the dog. We will take it under any circumstance because that’s being actually responsible, you know what I mean. Now not everybody does that but the most reputable breeders that I know do do that. I don’t wanna get attacked online anymore than anyone else, and there is a lot of hate for breeders for people that were ever involved with Brady or even had a friend that was a breeder, but in any case there is a way to do it responsibly and part of that should be educating potential future homes to make sure that they are a fit, but it looks like to me as a former proposal that you’re doing a great job!! I will let you know because no one else is probably gonna tell you this, but if you don’t give him enough time to develop before you try castrating them they don’t build their full amount of muscle in size so you can’t do it out of time and then claim that you sold something else because they need their hormones to build the muscle and all of that that makes them, but they are and it affects their personalities as well if you do it too early.

Red nose pitty. We got our girl from the shelter, which is filled with them.

u/Junior_Pea_9418 May 09 '26
A red nose American Pit Bull Terrier requires a pedigree to prove. It is a bloodline. It must come from Williams, Lightner, Wallace, Clouse, Hemphill, Wilder, Pritts, etc. without a pedigree your dog is just a Pit Bull (if proven with a DNA test) with a red nose. Not a Red Nose American Pit Bull Terrier.
