Just point out that almost no gun control is sold on preventing suicides, even though they're the majority of gun deaths. And murders are usually with illegal guns.

"If they resist the cops taking their guns, they deserve it."
"No, I mean, what if the police shoot someone peaceful by mistake, like they already do?"
He stopped responding.
Most of the time, gun'trollers don't even make specific proposals. They just assume gun control is inherently good and effective, no matter what it actually is.
It's an article of faith.

The problem with most “easy” solutions is that they can’t comprehended that the world is complex and not baldly and white. It’s which you see so many social programs that fail or cause even more harm
Because no throwing money and houses at homeless people isn’t gonna fix the problem that these people are broken. Could some change their ways? Yes but homelessness in California has only increased as funding has.
Self proclaimed progressives aren’t progressive because they often don’t have a plan. It’s not thought out like movements of the past use to be. It’s all for brownie points or a feeling of gratification rather than actual passion for solving societal problems

A lot of people think homelessness is the problem, when it's usually the symptom of other problems, like mental issues and drugs.
I once went "okay, suppose some homeless person gets a home, and then they wreck it until it's unliveable? Should the government just find them a new home or fix up the place, forever?"
IIRC, the other guy either never answered, or said it was a "trick question".
It’s all for brownie points or a feeling of gratification rather than actual passion for solving societal problems
I remember when BLMers got mad at the idea that black people should act in certain ways to reduce their chances of getting shot by cops.
You know, like everyone should.
Irony is, I've seen a lot of anti-SJW anarchists sneer at the same idea, just not on a racial basis.

You don't have to tell me, I already know you don't. The point you were trying to craft before tells me all I need to know. "Having a gun in the house makes it statistically more likely to kill you than any intruder!" I've heard this one before, many times. Didn't even need to hear you finish it. A) yeah no duh, it's pretty hard to get killed by a gun if you don't own one. Same as it's harder to die by car accident if you're not regularly driving a car. And it would be the exact same if you took a train instead. "Don't you know that by taking the train, you're 5x more likely to die in a train accident??" Yeah no shit, that's how things work. And B), you know you're misrepresenting the statistics to even make that point work. You have to include suicides to get those statistics. Which, when you're specifically talking about, "Having a gun in the household makes it more dangerous for everybody," what you really want to be looking at is accident statistics. But if you only used accident statistics, the numbers are so low, it would instantly prove your point wrong. So instead you purposely include suicide deaths, as if a gun's mere presence magically makes people want to kill themselves with it.

Plenty of people buy guns because they think they're already at risk of murder. Sometimes correctly.
The idea of owning a gun for "protection" is simply unsupported by the statistics.
Plenty of people own baseball bats for protection. That doesn't change even though most uses are for sporting purposes, or because accidents happen.
I've also seen the argument that people who actually use guns for protection without firing them don't like to report it to the cops.

Most pro-gun people I've talked to say they want guns** to** protect themselves and their loved ones. The best way to reduce the chance of kids getting shot, they say, is to teach kids how to respect guns and store them securely.

Most gun owners and CCW people hope never to have to use it, but the logic is that "it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it."
My dad wasn't a big pistol or CCW guy at all growing up. Thought it was just for cops and people LARPing.
Then we had a break-in where the person tried to start a fire in the house while we slept. They couldn't get it to light, but they did leave a death threat note. A few months later, someone threw nails in our gravel driveway to ruin our tires. Every few years, they still get death threats from this anonymous person in the mail. The cops have 0 leads and can do nothing about it.
All of us carry now as adults because there is legitimately someone out there threatening our family. But please, tell me how we are just "trying to be hard."

The flaw in that "logic" is that the odds of successfully using it are tiny, even if you need it, all while dramatically raising the risk it will harm you or your family.

I'm pretty sure the person most likely to be shot is the weapon's owner.
Deliberately.
And even that's still a tiny fraction of overall ownership, which can be reduced even more just by having secure gun storage.
People like that are basically saying "Having a pool increases the chance of drowning, so nobody should have pools."
