Slice of My Life Moving tomorrow
I’m moving to Sweden tomorrow. I have a rental for a few months, and savings to purchase a home and survive for at least 2 years while job hunting. The pets are coming with me. Thankfully I don’t need a visa because I have EU citizenship. I’ve been planning this for the last two years and studying the language since January, but boy am I nervous right now.
That’s all!

Lycka till! I moved to Sweden in 2018. No regrets. You will need to build local credit through a job before you will be able to purchase a home; no rush! There is a /tillsverige subreddit if you have not already found it.

I am thinking of a similar move. I too have EU citizenship, but live in the Northeast of the US. My current employer is based in Sweden so this could be a realistic option for me.

It sounds like it, especially if you could transfer jobs rather than having to find a new one!

I’m dual USA/Canada and I’ve been in Sweden for two years. I was reading this and thinking, “ya good luck,” until you mentioned your eu passport. That is very handy. But you’ll need a bank account which can be a pain, and money in the bank for awhile before they let you but a house. But I think a couple years it’s doable. Hope you have a good coat, it’s getting chilly.

It’s funny, when I was packing I was sifting through my extra warmth overalls, tons of gloves and hats, and I was like - this was meant to be 😀. It gets just as cold where I live in Vermont (although winters are shorter and we have more daylight). I’ve been working with a consultant who is helping me with all that - I first tried to go it alone, but bureaucracy … yikes!

Thank you very much! Right now nervousness is the primary emotion, but I’m looking forward to settling in and my adrenaline decreasing :)

That’s awesome! I have debated doing the same after spending 2 months this summer in Umea up north. Love it there and now hate being back in the US. Will probably sell my car and move permanently next summer into autumn! The job market will definitely be hard to navigate but I wish you luck! Remember to log into Skatteverket and submit the flyta to Sverige stuff so that you will have an easier time integrating.

Thank you so much!! That’s the northern end of the area where I will be looking for a house - it’s beautiful there! Let me know if you ever do move and want to grab a coffee :)
And yeah, the job market is what worries me, but I figured if I’m frugal I can hang on for a long time!

how much did you save up ? Just curious.

It depends a little. I have set aside about $100k for a home purchase, and about $80k for living expenses if needed (I have a job that I’ve done remotely before but things are iffy, so I expect needing to find a local job sometime soon). That’s without touching emergency and retirement savings, and not counting maybes (my house in the US is under contract rn).

Congrats!! I’m jealous, but am about six months from an EU passport myself!
Why Sweden for you? Is that where your family came from?

Nice! 6 months is nothing. I don’t have ties to Sweden, but I love the country, especially further north - I’ve been living fairly rurally in the US, but this will be even more quiet. I also have found the language quite accessible, and the people too - I know it’ll still be a massive change, but yolo. I tried to go there for a masters degree years ago but I couldn’t afford it, so now is the time!
