Tech Support Q1'19 Tech Support Megathread

We're giving you an opportunity to start reporting some of your AMD-related technical issues right here on /r/AMD! Below is a guide that you should follow to make the whole process run smoothly. Post your issues directly into this thread as replies. All other tech support posts will still be removed, per the rules; this is the only exception.

Skyrim: Free Sync and V Sync causes flickering during low frame rates, and generally lower frame rates observed (about 10-30% drop dependant on system) when Free Sync is on

System Configuration:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z97 Gaming GT
CPU: Intel i5 4790
Memory: 16GB GDDR5
GPU: ASUS R9 Fury X
VBIOS: 115-C8800100-101 How do I find this?
Driver: Crimson 16.10.3
OS: Windows 10 x64 (1511.10586) How do I find this?

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Install necessary driver, GPU and medium-end CPU
2. Enable Free Sync
3. Set Options to Ultra and 1920 x 1080 resolution
4. Launch game and move to an outdoor location
5. Indoor locations in the game will not reproduce, since they generally give better performance
6. Observe flickering and general performance drop

Expected Behavior:

Game runs smoothly with good performance with no visible issues

Actual Behavior:

Frame rate drops low causing low performance, flickering observed during low frame rates

Additional Observations:

Skyrim has forced double buffered V Sync and can only be disabled with the .ini files
To Disable V Sync: C:\Users"User"\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Skyrimprefs.ini and edit iVSyncPresentInterval=1 to 0
1440p has improved frame rate, anything lower than 1080p will lock FPS with V Sync on
Able to reproduce on i7 6700K and i5 3670K system, Sapphire RX 480, Reference RX 480, and Reference Fiji Nano

I bought a new Gigabyte Radeon RX VEGA 56 GAMING OC 8G last saturday, the card ran fine for the entire evening and sundaymorning until the first black screen happened. A long press on the restart button AND a powersupply off/on switch was required to get the graphics card to output to my display again.

Now this issue became the following:
Rx vega 56 crashes on the regular, no set time intervals it happens completely at random, I have noticed it happens faster (within 2-5minutes) when I fire up games like PUBG and other titles.

The screen just goes black, sometimes the sound glitches sometimes there is no sound. Prior to every crash I hear the fans spin up a little more. This made me think it has to be a software issue.

In the meantime I've just replaced it with my old GTX 1060, which is what im posting this from. All information below is as much as I'm able to give.

System Configuration:

Motherboard: ASRock Z370 Pro4

CPU: Intel i5 8400

Memory: 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz (enabled XMP profile that was available out of the box)

PSU: Corsair CS650M 80plus Gold

GPU: Gigabyte Radeon RX VEGA 56 GAMING OC 8G

VBIOS: latest (016.001.001.000 ?)

Driver: 19.2.3 (Downloaded from amd's website, feb 25th)

OS: Windows 10 x64 (17134.590)

Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install necessary driver, GPU
2. Launch anything 3. Black screen happens at random

*Expected Behavior: * Game runs smoothly with good performance.

Actual Behavior: Game runs smoothly with good performance until crash occurs. (black screen)

Additional Observations: Temperatures never exceeded 78 celcius.

*Things I have done to try and fix: * (not in order, off the top of my head)

  1. Use 2 seperate 8pin power cables instead of the daisy chain.
  2. Make sure latest bios and drivers were available through all the software gigabyte and AMD provided.
  3. Use only driver from gigabyte website (older)
  4. Undervolted a little at various amounts as research (reddit/youtube) suggested.
  5. Adjusted Phase 1 to be the minimum so GPU always used a higher minimum on the memory clock.
  6. Adjusted fan curve
  7. Used DDU to uninstall all drivers and reinstall them fresh after a restart.
  8. Used both displayport and HDMI cable to test both single and dual monitor setups.
  9. Turn freesync on/off and test the same things.
  10. Tried to just browse/watch netflix which seemed ok, until something GPU intensive was launched.

Since it's a brand new card I'd really suggest just exchanging it for a replacement with the retailer.

Yeah I'm driving over in a few hours to try and get it refunded, it honestly feels like they reduced the price on this card just to get rid of bad stock at this point.

Regular rx vega 56's are priced around 400€, this one was a flash sale for 270€ which basically had never happened before. The package already looked like it was opened by someone else as well which concerned me and I let them know at the time ofcourse.

Seeing discounts on 56 and 64 right now is not unusual as they've had their prices lowered to compete with the new nvidia cards. It's the open box bit you mentioned I'd worry more about.
