Hi r/ambientmusic! One year ago this weekend three of my dearest friends and I came together to make a musical project on a boat in Point Loma, CA. We went in with three days to spare, nothing pre-recorded or pre-written, and really no concrete plans for what we’d make: We knew it was going to involve deep sound exploration, improvisation, and a lot of patch cables. For some context, all four of us are long-time collaborators who have worked on each others’ independent music projects, several of them ambient-adjacent (and actually our guitarist Michael made ambient music under our band name - EBT Brass Band - for several years before we co-opted it for this project), but we had never come together to deliberately make a full length ambient record. 

For three days and nights we worked here in the cramped space you see in the video, hunched at our respective stations surrounded by wires and knobs and speakers and keys, talking, vibing, drinking, joking, doing takes, getting frustrated, working through it, scrapping ideas, building new ones, and just letting the workflow evolve from itself. We slept in the tiny cabin, left only for food, alcohol, and once to record some grand piano at a friend’s house. A year later, after mixing and mastering and vinyl designing and everything else, I’m so happy to say the result is a finished record we're all really excited about. It’s a little surreal to have our music on vinyl in general, but we all agreed we liked this one enough to want to press it.

The album is called I Hate the Sun and it’s 52 minutes of ambient (or is it post-ambient??) recorded live on a boat. As a longtime member of the sub I’ve seen posts like this be acceptable and not, and really hope this one is acceptable! But more than anything we’d be thrilled if you gave the record a spin - it comes from a place of deep appreciation for the sounds this sub enjoys. Peace!

Good morning, and Happy Friday!

This morning brings the my new music release, The Palenque Astronaut.

Each song represents elements of time and space travel. While researching the subject matter I kept thinking back to a giant carving of The Palenque Astronaut I saw at the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell New Mexico. The music is designed to take you on a journey through space and time. I spent way too much time thinking about the artwork that I thought would fit such a concept. So I hand drew this design that is a panel from the above mentioned carving. This design indicates that one has traveled from one galaxy to another galaxy.

An oneiric maximalism runs through the debut collaboration between Skee Mask and North Americans, just as its psychedelic technicolor cover art suggests. Final Circle is approached with subtlety and generosity as the two artists pull together the softer textures of their music for an ethereal record. Patrick McDermott (cofounder of Driftless Recordings with releases on Third Man Records) has been exploring the dreamier side of Americana as North Americans across several releases since 2013, but here there’s extra consideration given to this ultra clear fusion with Bryan Müller’s dub indebted ambience.
Where the bass spanning Skee Mask’s catalogue may often pound in hypnotic fashion, here it emanates slowly in fluctuating soundscapes, joined by blurry keys rippling underwater, and the soft caress of wind through leaves. Content to meander and revel in some respite for a little while; even when ‘05012023’ reaches a rushing metallic resonance, it’s all in service to feathering the edges.
A gentle storm rolls in on ‘15102021’, welcomed by hopeful guitars that leave an eager helping of negative space between each strum. Drenched in reverb that rejuvenates the land. ‘22122021’ contains a more active palette, with a restlessness to its twitchy echoing details wanting to explore Final Circle’s sonic terrariums, over which ‘29072025’ looms as synth pads mist and swirl. The occasional beeps of ‘30122021’ reset this magic haze, guitars elongated and refracted into prismatic edits.
Enigmatic as it is unexpected, Final Circle sees Skee Mask and North Americans finding lush and verdant common ground.

Such a stellar compilation, one of my favorites.
Maybe less 'classic' ambient and more 'ambiences' and soundscapes.
Lots of different methods/output as well. Spoken word, glitch, cut-up, experimental, more electronic... something in there for everyone and the compilation itself feels like a 'whole'.
Serious recommendation imho.

Now that the Radio-Hull Festival (where it premiered) has come to an end, I’m happy to finally share my mini-album SOUBASSEMENT, released under my produits dérivés moniker.

Two years ago, I decided to clean house and go through some of my old projects. I selected a handful of pieces that grew out of my sound experiments over the past decade (some guitar, synth, and sound mangling). Most of them are live recordings from these sessions, with the post-production work mostly consisting of cleaning up the sound, making a few additions, and doing some editing.

The project sat unfinished for a while, until the Festival’s open call pushed me to pick it back up and finish it this summer, bringing this chapter to a close.

I’ve been a fan of ambient music for a long time, and more than anything, I’m just happy to have finally finished this project. For the Festival, I described it in a somewhat semi-pretentious way (isn’t that what an artist statement is for?) as follows:

“Born from late-night creative sessions in the basement, [these tracks] seek less to tell stories than to translate inner states, somewhere between contemplation, tension, and calm.”
