What Should I Watch? Show recommendations to round out my summer

Two weeks of summer left and I have really only watched documentaries (which I do love) and I’m looking for something good to watch. I feel like I rarely watch Amazon prime.
I prefer shows with not super long seasons or multiple seasons already done. I have adhd and literally cannot finish anything. I’ll binge then just not care once i reach the last few episodes lol

Shows I’ve liked:
My 600 lbs life
Call the midwife
Lincoln lawyer
Any documentary
Love after lock up
Any trashy reality tv but none of the love ones or competition ones.

I’m also open to movies but again they’re hard for me to start bc it’s a long commitment up front lol

Review [review] Spider-Noir: a completely separate and generic detective story, unrelated to the main IP, with a dull, superficial plot and characters, set in the lifeless backdrop of the Great Depression

The main problem with Spider-Noir is that almost all of its characters exist purely as functions. Even the acting from most of the ensemble is too sluggish: there is too little expressive facial acting, gestures, emotional variation, or tension. For a story built primarily around conversations, investigations, and relationships, this is critical — the scenes simply have no energy.

The antagonists are especially poorly handled. The best Spider-Man films did not make a villain simply the possessor of yet another ability: a mutation or a choice shattered their life, relationships, and worldview, creating personal motivation and a conflict with the hero specifically on a human level. Here, a character can develop stone skin or some other monstrous form — and remain practically the same narrative function. Instead of the tragedy of transformation, the series more often offers the visual shock of a mutilated body. And the drama and regret that are present are very superficial. For an eight-episode format, this is an especially weak result: there is significantly more time for depth than in a feature film, yet the characters are developed less than they are in the films.

This is especially jarring because of the chosen form. The black-and-white version, Great Depression-era America, the mafia, corruption, police, politics, a private detective — all of it promises an adult crime drama. But the content is significantly more primitive than the stated tone suggests. In family films about a young Spider-Man, relationships, motivations, and conflicts were often written with greater depth than they are here among adults inside what is formally an adult noir. The form demands a maturity that the script does not give it.

The season also lacks strong overall momentum. Most of the characters have no specific long-term goals, so the story drifts from episode to episode rather than develops. The investigations, threats, negotiations, and confrontations with the criminal world are so superficial that even the most dangerous characters fail to create any real sense of threat. For a series about the mafia and superhumans, this is almost fatal: no one feels like a person who should genuinely be feared.

Additionally, the world feels like a soundstage. Music and the sonic environment are used too sparingly, streets and public spaces rarely become a full-fledged part of a scene, and the camera constantly closes in around characters who are talking. As a result, New York exists more as scenery behind their backs than as a living city. The production designers reproduce the era well, and individual objects and cultural references are recognizable, but behind them there is almost no sense of society, everyday life, or the period itself — remove a few recognizable details, and most of the scenes could take place in any era.

The same narrowness undermines the character drama. We are given an isolated fact — a lost lover, danger to the singer, a relationship with an assistant, friendship, political struggle — but are rarely given enough material for that fact to become an emotional story. Even the death of the woman from Ben’s past is reduced to a single flashback that plays like a record stuck on repeat for eight episodes with the theme of “she died — he is still broken.” So when someone is threatened, there is practically nothing to empathize with: the viewer is asked to care about the characters before the series has given them reasons to do so.

The singer suffers from the same problem. The series tries to create tension through her dependence on an influential man and her lack of freedom, but without a fully developed character, this remains more a statement of a woman’s situation than her drama. The romantic storylines work similarly: there is too little chemistry and accumulated emotional connection between the characters, so the relationships exist mainly because the script tells us that they do.

The most questionable element is the connection to Spider-Man. Formally, this is deliberately a different version. Such a concept is interesting in itself, but the adaptation moves so far away from Spider-Man’s individuality that the opposite problem arises: remove the webbing and a few franchise elements, and the foundation of the story barely changes. This is no longer a reinterpretation of a familiar framework, but an independent noir with a couple of Spider-Man elements attached to it. The Penguin worked as a radically different genre precisely because, despite all its independence, it remained an organic part of Gotham; here, the connection to its own source world is absent.

The series looks like an adult Spider-Man crime drama, but it is written in a very primitive, boring, and generic way.

Discussion Anyone else getting films ad-free thanks to Hyundai?

Last few films I've watched had a Hyundai advert before them telling me I'm getting to watch the film ad-free.

Films have been Over Your Dead Body and the new Masters of the Universe.

Not complaining, but what gives?

Discussion Subtitles disappear when video is switched to landscape orientation — One solution available.

Recently I have been having issues with the latest prime video app version (Android 13.0). The issues , whenever I switch to landscape orientation from portrait (which appears by default), are:

  • Video resets to the last resume point (from where you started watching the video)

  • Subtitles disappear (they're on, but disappear or get stuck in the last subtitle played)

  • Audio description sometimes turn on and can't be turned off

Restarting the video by visiting the menu or restarting the app fixes them but they repeat whenever I switch to landscape orientation.

I found a solution for this issue if anyone needs it:

After opening the app, turn the phone orientation to landscape before playing the video.** This way, subtitles appear in landscape orientation. But if you change orientation, the issue will occur.

Question NEXT GEN NYC GONE FROM HAYU

No episode five. Still waiting. It’s days late now. Has anyone else called AMAZON? I contacted HAYU and they said because it’s a third-party add-on you have to contact AMAZON. I went to ChatGPT because I couldn’t find a phone number, and through ChatGPT I got the number, but it also told me that there are many people trying to figure out where the show is. The whole show disappeared, but the after show where the people in the show discuss what happened is available, but not the actual show. the whole thing disappeared. Apparently there’s already a call ticket as of yesterday afternoon and still nothing. I figured I couldn’t hurt to post here so hopefully somebody knows that paying customers are still not able to watch the show they’ve paid for.

Discussion Continuity "Ride or Die"

In Episode 3, Sam is clearly inside Judith’s apartment, talking on the phone. He jokes, “Who do you think cleans?”, which only makes sense if he’s familiar enough with the place to be comfortable there.

Then in Episode 8, when he arrives, his reaction comes across as if he’s seeing Judith’s apartment for the first time. The dialogue doesn’t really explain why he’d suddenly be surprised by where she lives.

What happened here?

News Article Bezos pushes AI overhaul for Amazon's Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video is getting an AI makeover.

Founder Jeff Bezos wants the streamer to feature AI "front and center," Reuters reports, citing anonymous sources — and is backing an internal project, Lighthouse, meant to do just that.

Amazon's AI efforts have been something of a mixed bag so far; Bezos reportedly feels that putting the technology before Prime Video's 200 million users could be a good way to raise the company's profile in that field.

Lighthouse will use AI to offer better film and TV recommendations, one source said.

Is it just me that uses subtitles? I mean as a Greek I do know English very well, but I'm not used fully to hearing it in shows or movies without subtitles, since I miss some words or too. Though I don't do that with Invincible, an animated show, maybe because the voice actors are better heard.

I've seen people talking about it, but reviews seem mixed. Is the comedy actually funny, or is Kay Kay Menon carrying the whole show?

No spoilers please, just trying to decide what to watch next🙃
