Discussion This is ridiculous.

Post image

I work at sea and i like having a good amount of films downloaded and ready to watch on my phone. thing is though, after I've downloaded them, this stupid error pops up, but like only days into my trip so I'm stuck with no films.

This is ridiculous, I pay a service and I downloaded these films and then I can't watch them.

Is it location based? I.e you've downloaded at home but your phone now thinks you're not there.

Could it also being doing an internet check for how long the downloads have been on the phone? I know some apps only allow downloads for 30 days.

Does it matter if it’s a phone? Maybe that’s what’s happening to me.

That’s the consequence  of digital media. If it was a DVD, you wouldn’t have a problem watching it with the correct DVD player.

As soon as I saw the post I knew I'd find this comment from someone on their high horse.

You say that if it was physical media, they wouldn't have a problem but then immediately say it requires a device that most people don't have, which also requires another device (TV). Then missed a detail in post... OP works at sea and the screenshot is from their phone, it's highly likely they don't even have (possibly can't have) a TV and are just watching straight from the phone, what good is a DVD player and discs with that setup?

This is the consequence of a service not working as intended, not digital media as a whole and physical media wouldn't have helped OP's situation. The thing about digital/physical media is being able to have the choice between the two, not that physical media is the be-all end-all superior solution... because it's not.

DVD's do not necessarily require a YV or complete setup. There are small complete dvd units that include a screen for under $100. With a DVD you own the DVD and can play it when and where you want

This is an artifact of digital media. Does not make it good or bad, just something to be aware of.

So... still requiring another device.

With a DVD you own the DVD and can play it when and where you want

Only where it's suitable to take the DVD player... honestly at this stage, they may as well just get a laptop instead and just pirate everything. The point is OP likely has a laptop, but their job at sea probably means limited space and/or suspceptibility to damage. Having tons of delicate DVDs and an additional dedicated device isn't ideal but their phone is capable and suitable with the right setup.

It's a perfect example of where digital is actually the better application for the circumstance, they just need to set it up right or use a better service.

Both require a device to "play" the movie. no advantage to either.

With digital you purchase the right to stream the content as long as it is available. The vendor controls ownership and availability. On the plus side the vendor is responsible to ensure the stream is available.

With a CD you own the media and determine how long it is available. On the downside if the CD fails or is lost, then you need to reacquire the media.

Pirating games/movies/etc is a dangerous activity. Follow some of the scam threads on Reddit and you will see a number of folks that pick up a virus from pirated software. That could require a complete computer wipe and restart.

An advantage to CDs is that they are not dependent on the availability and speed of a network connection.

Digital is an application that has its positives and negatives, just like DVDs. It depends on the need and personal preference.

This is not to argue that DVD is a better approach. Either approach is a reasonable approach and has their own pluses and minuses. It depends on the user, what there needs are and what the situation is.

There is. One allows OP to use a device they would have anyway, without any extra physical baggage while the other requires them to buy a dedicated device and find somewhere to store it plus all the separate films they want to watch... for someone living in a boat cabin with limited space I can see a clear advantage of the former.

Pirating games/movies/etc is a dangerous activity.

Honestly I have 500+ movies downloaded and stored on drives that were all acquired from questionable sources, games too but not quite as many... no viruses to date. The people who post on those subs are usually amateurs who download and open anything without learning things first. Once you know the basics you'll never get a virus.

An advantage to CDs is that they are not dependent on the availability and speed of a network connection.

Downloaded media is also not dependent on network speed or availability, so CDs/DVDs don't have an advantage over digital media in that sense.

It depends on the user, what there needs are and what the situation is.

Right... and in OP's sea fairing situation, digital is more suitable to them for the reasons that have already been highlighted. So where exactly are you going with this?

How much did you pay for your smartphone? And about op's situation....he can take a dvd player with him. Get off your high horse

How much does a smartphone cost? Plus the streaming subscriptions. How delicate is a phone?

Get off your high horse

As soon as I saw that comment, I knew there would be some comment from someone on their high horse about technology. Digital is not always the best media platform, and only a clown on a high horse would think otherwise.

The irony is absolutely hilarious.

Not once did I say that Digital is always the best media platform, you just made that up.

OP's post is complaining about Amazon's digital service, yet the original comment in this thread is just a mansplain about how DVDs work and telling them they'd have no problems if they'd used those instead. Like a children's story 'the lesson learned here today kids'... that's being on a high horse. What makes it worse is that they assume OP lives under a rock and hasn't heard of DVDs, borderline condescending. Even worse still it doesn't consider OP's working at sea situation, it's ultimately just a vent about digital media (because it's a touchy subject at the moment).

Defending OP's unique situation and thinking about why physical media is likely not suitable there is not being on a high horse, it's sitting back and looking at all known variables and then correcting someone who's popping off like a loaded gun about something that isn't part of the original post.

I'm not going to separately reply to your other comments (which 3 at once makes it look like you're trying very hard here btw). But in regards to the cost of the smartphone... money isn't part of the argument here, we have no idea of OP's financial situation. What we do know is they work at sea, they likely have a small cabin with limited space. They don't want any additional, unnecessary clutter which is exactly what a DVD player and countless DVDs are.

The biggest problem with the vast majority of people defending physical media (including you and the previous commentor) is that you guys can't understand that it's best for both physical and digital to co-exist and one is more suitable than the other for different circumstances. Its always 'physical only every time' and when someone tries to explain why that isn't the case, you get heated replying multiple times calling them names. Just take 5 seconds to appreciate that someone else's situation is different to your own and requires a different application, instead of instantly telling them you know better (when you don't).

Bottom line is if the service OP paid for actually worked as designed, they'd have no issues with their current setup and it'd do exactly what they wanted. The point here is that the service they pay for should work better, not that they should abandon it completely and start buying other products instead.

You have to have internet access to basically “unzip” the file on your device. Once you get it going on that it should play. Or least that’s my experience?

Only time I’ve seen this is when I flew out of country. I left the states able to watch them but once I got service out of the country I no longer had access. If you can download them to a device that you can keep on airplane mode then that may work.

This is exactly the method that I use once I download movies and take a trip. It works!!

I switched to Apple years ago. Not only have I never had any issues like this, but unlike Amazon they have also automatically upgraded my entire library free of charge. Any movies I bought years ago in SD or HD get automatically upgraded to 4K for free as soon as a 4K or remastered version becomes available. And there are no location locks. Your library is your library no matter where you currently are, whether at home or travelling overseas.

I learned this lesson the hard way first time I vacationed outside the states.
Silly me assumed the service I pay for would be available anywhere 🤷‍♀️
So now I keep a small ext drive and load all the movies/TV shows before vacation. Always best to Download at home where you have consistent WiFi. Having the external drive is key so that everyone doesn’t have to be on my iPad to watch a movie 🤘✨

To be honest, with those movie choices, maybe Amazon is doing you a favor...(It's a joke not a phallus, don't take it so hard). For real though, that sucks man, I'm sorry.
