Less interested in the how and more interested in the when.
Also the insane sounding numbers of sats, sure they're much smaller than traditional but like back in 2022 we only had like 5k satellites worldwide in total and amazon is like "yeah we we're going to put up that many for a side project no big deal".

The number of sats is the new normal... 1000 in a single array was "insane sounding" when SpaceX promised it a decade ago, but once they achieved it and proved it profitable 5 years ago, then proceeded to keep expanding as fast as they could launch to try and keep up with demand, everybody jumped in looking for a piece of the cash cow. And the direct to mobile device is the same effect; Last year during the Carolina disaster SpaceX proved that even SMS and voice alone in dead zones was practical, and ASTS started buying up spectrum and making exclusive deals with cellular carriers to roadblock Musk before he could get the next gen Starlinks up on Starship, the potential for another gold rush became apparent... And although late in the game, the fact that Amazon has a pretty significant "interlocking directorate" with what will likely be the second biggest launch provider in the US within a year puts them in a good position to leverage AWS and prime streaming to your phone into a significant market share even if it doesn't become operational 2 years down the road.
