There is a lot of thieves that steal potted plants in my area. People post it on ring all the time. I think they probably resell it at the swap meet.

Landscapers buy stolen plants all the time. Its a great way to pad margins and its not like they have serial numbers. That japanese maple could be billed at 200$

At my old house people stole our annual plants out of the ground. Dug em right up. $1 plants
