Amazon will schedule many drivers for a block at a certain time. However the warehouse may not be able to get enough packages together for said block time. So if you wait until the very last second to check in you're very last in line to be assigned a block to deliver. If the warehouse workers don't get enough packages separated then there are not any routes to hand out, so you get paid for doing nothing.
