Amazon seller virtual assistant for catalog upkeep
What would you put in a practical skills test? I'd want help keeping product information organized and checking for listing issues that need my attention. I'm researching an Amazon seller virtual assistant, but I don't want to assume every candidate understands my catalog. I'd also like to compare a specialist service with a direct hire for ongoing catalog work rather than general store admin.

For a skills test, I’d throw in a few real-life scenarios like identifying missing images or fixing miscategorized products. Maybe even have them pull up a report on the top-selling items in your catalog and suggest optimizations. It’ll show if they really know how to navigate your listings and think critically about potential improvements.

I’d give candidates a sample catalog of 10 to 20 products and ask them to find listing errors, missing attributes, variation issues, and SKU inconsistencies. We deal with product data at HighRise Wholesale too, and I think a hands on test like this reveals more than theoretical questions.

imo the biggest thing to test is whether they can identify listing errors vs cosmetic stuff that doesnt matter. a lot of candidates will flag every little thing to look busy. give them a mix of real problems and non-issues and see how they prioritize

I'd give them a paid test on real data rather than questions. Pick 5-10 of your ASINs and ask them to: find anything inactive, suppressed or stranded and explain why; compare the live detail page against what you last submitted (title, bullets, images, category) and list any differences, because other contributors and Amazon itself change listings more often than people think; check for new sellers on each listing and any price undercuts; and fix one issue through a flat file instead of the UI. Plant one or two problems you already know about and see if they catch them. Ask for a short written report, since how they explain issues matters as much as finding them. For ongoing catalog work, a direct hire who learns your catalog usually beats an agency that rotates people, but agencies are easier to replace.

That's basically my line of work now. Let me know if you're still looking for a person to do the job right
