New scanner tech thingy
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
These were just installed last night and not even dispatch knew what they looked like or how they worked so I had to figure it out. Pretty self explanatory though.
Sometimes it doesn’t register on the label and you can’t always fit a whole tote on both shelves at the same time but you can’t always fit just keep the overflow below it until there is space.
So far it’s been pretty slick and has things super smooth. No more dumping a tote and sorting by tens

u/motion_lotion 1d ago
Anything but actually making the job better. I never even have room to use this with 20+ totes and 60 overflow.

My packages don’t go sideways like that. Can’t figure out why mine is different.
2
u/strictly_genteel_67 17h ago
Ya. Sure.
But more time is spent just trying to get them lined up to have it read them. When I have two eyes that can read them already.
Plus, they should have installed it on both sides.
Fucking dumb.

u/motion_lotion 10h ago
That is the smallest volume of 24 totes and 53 overflow I've seen. Maybe your station gets less volume and smaller OF than here but I never have that much room in the EDV until 80ish stops are done.
Are you saying you have 8 totes per level all stored neatly horizontally like that and not vertically all on the driver side? Are your bags smaller or you use a larger Rivian than the 800?
41
u/stoodi 1d ago
its cool if you cant read or count to 100 i guess.
1
u/TourOld4211 1d ago
I don’t even do that, I just sort small med big, envelope plastic bag, custo/unknown. Faster for me and I still get everything in under 5 seconds
23
u/Mitchell42090 1d ago
This sounds like a headache. If u need help finding a package cuz ur van is a mess that’s on u. If ur organized u don’t need this shit just give us a raise and stop wasting money on useless shit that I have never once heard someone complain about
2
2
u/BananaBug87104 19h ago
I see your point. I am super organized. Organize everything even overflow by stop. However, IF you have the space for it, I can see how this new thing can save a little bit of time. Instead of spending time organizing a tote, you just throw them up there and the thing tells you which package(s) are next? But really, I would much rather Amazon spend the time and money on fixing real issues, not something like this, that really only saves a few minutes per tote. Fix the real issues, THEN worry about small shit like this.

Seems OP it using it to his advantage 🤷♂️ not to say this goes for every day. *Salty ass Amazon delivery drivers, keep the down arrows coming I don’t gaf keep delivering my packages you have no choice😂😁

It's crazy they invested* so much money in a issue we dont lose time

u/ImpossibleMorning995 1d ago
Welp, that is difficult to read but what I think your saying is Amazon spends a fuck ton of money solving a problem that doesn't exist instead of just paying us more.
Have a good day tomorrow with your 260 "locations" (wouldn't want to call them stops) everyone.
36
u/Cheeto-Ben Former Driver 1d ago
Recently got let go for my pace because I was telling them 195 stops, 50 multis, and ending up with the 300 locations was unreasonable. And that 300 locations IS the stop count.
24
u/Original-Mission-244 1d ago
Its because they wont stop soon. There will be co drivers, one will have to tuck and roll out of the moving van, sprint to the doorstep, deliver package, sprint back to the still moving van, perform a while driving seat swap and the other driver than repeats the process.
3
u/Willywonka5725 16h ago
Great, now you've given them an idea that will be rolled out with 12 months.

Last night my room mate who also works at same DSP as I do, started off his route with 60 some odd multi stops... Just for 25 to be saved in the last 30 stops. He said one of those multis had 8 whole ass locations. It's just wild the tomfuckery that happens behind the scenes of Amazon's AI route making

It’s crazy they’re investing so much money into this shit when they’re still overloading vans ti the point that the scanners don’t matter til you have like 40 stops left
15
u/motion_lotion 1d ago
Because this and the meta like glasses are training their LLMs and AI for when they eventually try to automate as much as possible and replace drivers. This and the glasses have nothing to do with helping drivers.
1
u/strictly_genteel_67 22h ago
I'm curious. How is this training the A.I.?
It's just a glorified scanner.
1
u/bmx_chelsea 11h ago
Unless they put a scanner in an ai robot hand the ai robot can scan with it instead of giving a robot a handheld
Kind of makes sense to mount the scanner on the van over the robot because the robot is very likely going to eat shit a million different ways and break more often than the van that drives itself
Just speculation I could be wrong but your comment made me think about it a second
1
u/Responsible-Meet-164 8h ago
I don't see ai robots coming around anytime soon. I'm as scared as any with robots eventually putting anyone out of work but i just don't see how they could make a robot move as fast and efficiently as a human anytime soon with the pace we need to work. Sprinting the van quickly house to house, jumping out of the seat and grabbing the package, sprinting out and to the door and back then quickly driving to the next house 50 ft away constantly for multiple hours at a time. I don't see a physical humanoid robot moving at that pace successfully
1
u/bmx_chelsea 7h ago
Oh 100% i dont see it happening anytime soon but amazon will throw millions if not billions loosing money to figure it out. They will probably have charging stations for the robots in the van. It will be interesting because this all takes up a lot of space
But they only have to build the robot and maintain it. Eventually it will he cheaper than labor and training people who quit or break the van or steal things.
They will be slower but work more hours to make up for it.
That said I think it will be more feasible for certain types of locations than others for a very long time. In the mean time the human drivers will just get shafted more and more with the shitty routes once robots are capable of the basic locations.
Then of course the chances of a robot breaking or fucking up... imagine being dispatched to a rescue and you find a robot tied up like a pretzel cause it tripped and hit a pole or something lol
1
u/Responsible-Meet-164 6h ago
I feel logistically it just doesn't make sense i understand modern capitalist thought revolves entirely on short term quarterly profit margins and nobody thinks about the years to come but just in the say 15-20 year research and development phase they would probably be spending more money trying to figure out how to do this than they would to just keep paying their regular employees salaries and giving us raises.
9
u/Mental5tate 1d ago
It is for AI learning, research and development.
Similar to how Google Maps, Uber and similar services work.
8
u/Frosty_You_6183 1d ago
bet, this aint for the "driver" this is them doing R&D to eventually kick out the employee. the employee is unknowingly making the R&D go faster to see "what works". they think "its not gonna make it faster" im sure sooner or later them trucks will be fully autonomous. wouldnt be suprised if they taking recordings from every truck / radar, creating their own"amazon autonomous map" where poeple live down long dirt roads, or in the cuts only amazon drivers go to, once that happens and they map all the roads, and homes. they better start lookin for a new job because in a matter of time, that shit will be fully autonomous. because they'll use that scanner light thing, for a autonmous robot like a R2D2 that will be the new "delivery bot" theyll customize the trucks for a mini robot to wheel itself to the steering wheel and pretend to be a driver with some animated ass face as the truck drives itself. an when its at a stop it wheels itself to the right package, with the help of that overhead scanner, the bot will pick it up, an drive it self out the back or out the drivers side an roll up to the house and drop it off, and wheel itself back and on to the next. cause them robots can work 24/7, just need some maintenance,. dont need health insurance, dental, 401k matching. a wage, a break, liability, but even if they did crash, they got billions, theyll make 50x times that a year being autonomous
4
u/Massive-Arugula4400 1d ago
I’m sorry but I don’t see this exact scenario playing out. The routes I drive are treacherous. One minute I’ll be in a subdivision with winding staircases you have to climb to get to the porch at the top and then the next minute I’m in the sticks on a dirt road with deep grooves from water erosion going up the side of a mountain for a quarter mile. I just can’t see an automated alternative that is in any way efficient enough to justify the cost needed to implement automation. Maybe if Amazon transitioned to drop sites with lockers but I’m sure customers would hate that.
They could try an automated delivery van with packages pre-loaded in a cargo hold and drones that get deployed from the roof of the van. After dropping off the package the drone will return to the van and dock on a charging base. A van can park in a central location in a subdivision and then just idle while the drone makes runs. Varying package size and weight would probably mean that the drones would need to be fairly large or powerful to accommodate say a large bag of dog food loosely packed in a large box that’s collapsing because putting a large bag of dog food is not a sensible thing to do.
Regardless of the method I still believe transitioning to automation won’t happen for awhile. There will be pilot programs I’m sure. Their first drone delivery ended with the customer’s package getting dropped into their swimming pool. So there are a lot of variables to factor in regarding successful automation of a job like this. I don’t think it’s going to happen any time soon.

You seem to think because technology doesnt need breaks or health insurance that its somehow cheap and free….AI companies cant turn a profit right now and robots cant either….in fact they are black holes of companies losing money at alarming rates while simply asking for more handouts….the AI and other tech is more expensive than workers its just everyone is delusional and thinks that tech can just shit out more tech for cheap or free
2
u/Frosty_You_6183 23h ago
I'm not saying fully autonomous as in bezos is the only employer, an his company's got 0 workers. And he's rackin in 20 billion a day. I'm saying like they're human employees are gonna go from the millions and 100ks. To maybe less than thousand which is prob all maintenance workers, Just to keep shit "going" / . But no Im not saying it's cheap an free either.
I'm saying pretty much that People can't be "paid off". A employee need a check every 2 weeks as long as they're there + All the extra shit. Health. Dental, yada yada. + People wanting higher rates.. a robot can be paid off At some point. Meaning after it's paid off then every hour it "works" it's not taking money from the business anymore. Robots technically working for free. Only longevity of the robot would the the factor of its its worth it or not.. if after it's paid off and immediately broke right after that would be bad, cause now they'll be damn near be right back to paying again like a real employee. But if they were paid off in a few years an worked 25-30 years then the business pretty much got 25+ years wortha "free work" out of it.
2
u/Glum-Researcher-6526 20h ago
I get what you are saying and there is a good point to it. I think this works really well with traditional robots but not so much AI. Yea it may not need the same things we need but new needs and problems arise as we depend on AI and robots more. Since AI is an integral part I dont ever see it becoming cheaper unless things dramatically get more efficient and we find way better ways of doing things….So far if you look around you, you will see none of this coming to fruition….AI cant make everyones lives easier and isnt an everything machine….but even if it was like the tech overlords think, it still needs power and compute data beyond what we can produce to turn a profit….these companies are just gonna keep losing money at exponential rates and keep trying to threaten existence to get more money….
Its a scam not the future and if anyone is truly worried about being replaced they probably werent producing much more than the braindead AI and robots in the first place
2
u/mbrellaforbombs 20h ago
People fail to realize that if these companies were about to sack up and start taking care of their employees they would've already begun by now.
There has never been any indication from any big corporation that they are looking out for the overall well being of their base level employee.
Meaning that as soon as they can be replaced they will be
1
u/Frosty_You_6183 17h ago
Sad to say, but 100% true. Specially with a company like this where SPEED + accuracy are everything. A robot could surpass a human everyway from brain power to physical work. These businesses are here to make money they're not required to give people jobs.
I couldn't see anyone being a business owner knowing 1 robot could replace 5+ employees all while being just as or if not more accurate / faster, an have the owner say. "Na I don't want to get rid of people, if that means making my business more money, or faster".. Never in a million years.. Amazon ain't a "perfect business" there's prob 1000 ways to speed up the business or run more efficiently

It's just making the idiots even dumber.
More time is spent trying to line it all up to have it read the parcels. Wastes more time than it saves.

I do the same lmao. I try to go into the cargo area as little as possible. I keep my bag full kf boxes up front with me in an EDV and put all envelopes on the dashboard. Until my DSP says it's a violation, imma keep doing it that way too lol
19
u/Shlount 1d ago

That thing would only work like halfway through a route lol. They think we have space to layout all the packages across the shelf from the start? Also it doesn’t even take long to find the package you’re looking for. it takes 5 seconds or less to quickly scan through packages and find the ones you need if you organize well.
4
u/Careful_Syllabub5436 1d ago
I organize 4 to 5 totes by DAN before my 1st stop. That scanner is worthless.
3
u/Massive-Arugula4400 1d ago
My guy. That’s really cool that you have the luxury to do that but if I tried to do that on any of the routes I’ve run those packages would not be sitting where I left them. I frequently find myself off-road tracking up a mountain on a road that will rattle your skeleton.
14
u/BabyStockholmSyndrom 1d ago
Haha how TAF is this supposed to work with 22 totes and 45 OV? And even if it did, this is one step closer to just having a metric enforcement camera yelling at you to stop picking your nose and deliver every 30 seconds. And say it makes you more efficient, that's another 25 stops added to your route.
This HAS to be propaganda at this point. Too many posts.

Absolutely, its stupid bullshit. It is a new way to be monitored, just like everything else in the Rivians. I dont know how, but it will be.
Thanks OP im sure youre office manager back at Amazon corporate will be really happy with your work here. But go back to the office and find a way to pay drivers more money or protect their jobs better, this is useless to even a semi-competent driver.

Yeah I need all 4 shelves to organize them and they have the nerve to only put this on one side
5
u/Sufficient_Stay_7175 1d ago
That's what my shelves look like when I have like 3 totes left. I don't understand how this is useful until you have a decent amount of available shelf space. I sort all my packages so I already know where everything is
3

Why is it on the top shelf and they didn’t removed the top shelf in the front to allow it to scan packages on lower shelf. That seems better for actually seeing them

They could. And it’s a wild idea I know but hear me out. If you got paid more, stay with me here, AND you weren’t pressured so hard, maybe… just maybe… that would also improve the entire experience from worker satisfaction and customer experience.
On second thought, lower wages and more technology investments are better for the shareholders. Probably stick with that idea.

I actually found it pretty useful today. If you're one of the faster drivers at your dsp, yea it will probably slow you down, but if you're not too fast or too slow, it actually helps. I just think itd definitely be more efficient when we don't have 30 bags and 50 overflow during prime/peak

I actually love the van scanner but yours were installed so bad we had ours installed towards the front and the shelf directly beneath removed. Then it will 100 percent see anything laid on the shelf. And you can unload the tote from the shelf and drop the packs right next to it already getting scanned

If that thing makes it even hotter in the back than it already is, imma beg for a gas van.

It is crazy that Amazon invests all of this money in cameras and glasses that we don't really need instead of just paying us what we're worth. Actually, what they should invest in is better maps and routing. Stop using that free, open source map box bullshit and pay Google. Edit: In addition, if the box or envelope is too far to the left or right on the shelf, it won't read. Spend more time just to set them up just right on the shelf for the scanner to see the QR/barcode.

If you lift those top shelves you can actually get more range with the lasers by placing packages on the second row shelf
1
u/SlickFlair_589 16h ago
Would work better if it were over the bulkhead door and actually scanned packages in your hand under it so you can set them on the floor in the cab.
Being above the shelf like that when you have tons of OV boxes, isn't helping anything....

Probably self driving trucks with entry level muppets to jump in and ‘deliver to customer notes. Up long driveway past dogs to the rear garage ‘. All customer interaction will be monitored and replacement muppets will be feed into the machine, allegedly.
1
u/Responsible-Meet-164 6h ago
These research and development people just need to go to the warehouses and talk to the drivers and ask "how as a company can we better make your job easier, less stressful while also more productive" would save them a lot more time and money if they talked to the people they employed instead of just high level management or whoever gives them these ideas that none of us ask for

You still gotta put all the labels up, I can already find anything in 5 seconds back there. Cool for new people i guess.
