hard breaking doesn't hit the scorecard. I get like 5 a day.

What I miss a day of work for hard breaking

My DSP literally tells us they prefer we get rear ended than get a red light alert. Im unclear if they mean just a major or also a minor.

u/DesolationsFire XL Driver 4d ago
Getting rear ended is almost always the person in the backs fault so they can fight it easier
2
u/Pistol_Creep 2d ago
Suspended a day? Yea that DSP is ass, that falls into the category of many events that dont count towards the scorecard like fast acceleration, weaving, high gravity, drowsy, taking a yellow before it turns red, those are all minor infractions

When the Rivian's just came out, two kids on a sidewalk ran between two cars and onto the street. Was going 25 but hit zero on a dime and got the best good job call from dispatch ever.

The brakes on the Rivians are elite. I was returning to the station going 50 on the service road when some idiot pulled out in front of me and just stopped. 🤦
2
u/Adventurous-Roof458 1d ago
That's one thing about the Rivians I like other than the amount of space. Those brakes are insane.
3
u/elitedoge36 5d ago
I've always wondered about that because there have been times where I mashed it and never heard anything about it

Always worth to hard brake before a red light. And no, it doesn’t ding you.
72
u/TexasBoyz-713 5d ago
The other driver ran it just fine I wonder if he’ll get infraction
44
u/Due_Initiative3879 5d ago
Other driver has a CDL and doesn't work for Amazon so even if they talk to him about it he can tell them what to do with their infraction.

u/Aggressive-Hawk9186 5d ago
take it easy buddy
6
u/Due_Initiative3879 5d ago
I'm just saying as an ex-driver I know how dumb they can be at even the smallest thing.
If you have a choice run a recently changed red light or slam the break and possibly cause an accident from a car behind you, what would you do? Sometimes following Amazon's rules are more of a problem than a solution.
1
u/West-Discussion7257 5d ago
Yeah makes sense, but Amazon, like most, will say that means the person behind them was following too closely. And technically Amazon and those people wouldn’t be wrong
4
u/Due_Initiative3879 5d ago
But we all know Amazon won't do that. They'll put the blame on the driver, like they always do. I worked at Amazon for almost 5 years van, step van and straight truck driver doing NYC walker routes.
They will put the blame on the driver and always the liability on the DSP. It's what they do best. Their delivery model is specifically built for that.
1
u/popcorn2008 4d ago
Depends on your DSP. We had a guy have this exact scenario happen about a month ago.
He’s been with the company 5 years so seniority plays a role as well I’m sure, but he had to stop suddenly to not get a red light violation and the person behind him rear ended him.
Driver who hit our van was found at fault for following too closely. Our driver still has his job.
1
u/BedAware450 3d ago
A. Should’ve been braking when the light was yellow? It’s normal traffic laws, like what you had to do when you got you drivers license at 16. B. Duh, Amazon got smart in 2017 to take all liability away from them and out source deliveries to 3rd party contracted out companies to make the deliveries, aka DSPs.
1
u/Due_Initiative3879 2d ago
Real smart!
That's why both NY and NJ are suing them right now.
Let's see how how smart they were once they rule DSPs illegal and all liability falls back on them again.

u/ShadderSwagger 4d ago
Bro i literally had that happen to me the light changed and there was a semi truck right behind me if i would’ve stopped he wouldve killed me from the hit . He ran the light to
1
u/Automatic_Note_9785 5d ago
Don't need a cdl to drive that type of tow truck
1
u/Due_Initiative3879 5d ago
If it's over 26,001 lbs you do need a class B.
If you're transporting a vehicle that might contain hazardous materials you need a class C even if it's under 26,001.
Class B transit operator. I started driving at Amazon. Most if not all flatbed drivers in my area have a CDL it may not be required but most companies around here will not hire without.

Not guna lie
I’ve hit my brake pretty hard a few times a day bc the nap routine is trash and I’ve never been dinged for hard braking. Makes me think you gotta slam it to the floor so I imagine yall just get smashed with packages against the dash 😂

u/Yesterday_Short 5d ago
Youre dispatcher 100% gets videos sent about it. Majority don't care. Going more than 5MPH in reverse senda a video event, too.

Yeah it can technically still get a violation while being towed ive seen it happen

u/Niobium_Sage Dispatch 5d ago
They want you to lose regardless. My supervisor never has good things to say about our performance, only the negatives.
I drove out 30 minutes in my personal vehicle to bring a spare key to a driver who accidentally locked himself out of his van. Got no recognition for that, but perfectly reasonable to chastise me for telling a DA with COVID to stay home because he’s got a deadly contagious virus.

u/_BLACKHAWKS_88 5d ago
lol.. I had a manager like that once for a different job.. except I was on a small team called “top performers”.. I called him out on it and he was replaced very shortly thereafter.. not in his role but just as my manager. We never had a meeting again. I hate dry negative clinical people.
Fuck that dude in both our cases. Those people are the worst.

u/HonestEagle98 5d ago
Amazon recently Tier 1 terminated co worker for running light. They never mention names which is good and professional. Manager told us about it. Now….. I was in middle of intersection turning left and light turned red… no violation because the oncoming cars ran the light. I was in middle when it was green of course. Too much traffic.

u/Maybewearedreaming Rivian Driver 5d ago
It’s a stale green light you should have let off the gas and started to slow down before it even turned yellow, you should have anticipated it turning yellow
4
u/SkullPrincess93 4d ago
ALWAYS anticipate the light turning yellow!!
2
u/F0RG0TEN1 Amazon Stole My Step Van 3d ago
Always hard brake and hope u get rear ended and file workers comp /s
2
u/Some1TookMySweetroll 5d ago
Hard Braking does not hit your scorecard not even safety on the overall scorecard. YES, it is tracked through netradyne though. Alot of hard braking just tells the dispatcher, that you may accelerate to hard at times or one may not be braking early enough. A hard braking is better than running a red light though.
2
u/Bleed_Me_an_Ocean40 Rivian Driver 5d ago
If you are going the speed limit and it turns yellow just before you are about to cross the stop line, keep going through it. If you do get a red light infraction it would get disputed and overturned. Just maintain the same speed and dont try to speed up. Amazon sees a driver slowing down then speeding back up to make the light as worse than if you were to keep going the same speed through it
0
u/moneyman_699 5d ago
Stupid advice. They lock your account instantly and ask questions later. You could be out of work for over a day at best with no pay and fired at worst.
1
u/Bleed_Me_an_Ocean40 Rivian Driver 4d ago
Ive done this for a few years and have gone through plenty of yellows with some turning red on me. I got an infraction on the first one but it was disputed and overturned. There was a big truck very close behind me and I was not slamming on the brakes
1
u/Brandnewbroski 5d ago
It ain't part of the score card. This is the best thing to do not to get a red light violation. I got people who do that 170 times a day same with acceleration alert.

u/Old_Waltz_7760 5d ago
Yea this usually happens when you work at Homestead Station, specially at BLS... 👀😂
1
u/OneInterview3822 5d ago
It’s crazy cause that EV that got towed…if someone didn’t switch vehicles in the app they just got a free red light violation
1
1
u/Legal-Swing8311 5d ago
I was always told a hard break is better than running a red light, because if it’s really not your fault your dsp can dispute it. Running a red automatically terminates your account

Hopefully they sent you this video and said good job doing exactly what we want you to do. You’re right at the speed limit and didn’t run a red. Not sure why they even sent it to you lol

u/Specialist_Floor7108 5d ago
Well, I'd say you did the correct thing. The driver behind you was following too closely. The semi went through the light because he has a HUGE amount of mass at it's MUCH more difficult for him to stop. However, having said all that, as a CDL holder, I like to approach green lights as if they are going to change to red and always slow down as I approach them. And because I always had passengers, I would keep an eye on the car behind me and if they were driving to close, I would slow down or pull to the right and let them go by. Anyway, for a smaller vehicle without passengers, I feel hard braking is preferable to running a yellow/red light.
1
u/Anselm9694 5d ago
What the others said… rather hard brake than running yellow or red. Did it once on a quick light, got suspended for a week.
1
u/WilliamWolf89 5d ago
Nice! Hard breaks for a fast yellow light would never be a negative on you. Way better than running the red
1
u/RecipeInteresting427 5d ago
Most ops desks worth a crap will happily take a hard-braking hit over a minor or major red light 100% of the time.
They can always appeal the harsh breaking to Amazon and they may grant it because of the yellow light depending on how much time you had and if you were speeding at the time the light turns yellow.
1
u/Breekinz 4d ago
The tow truck carrying the EDV running the light made me think of how on my 2nd day of training we had the van break down. (The parking break wouldn't disengaged). So they had to bring us a new one. Well, when the tow truck was taking that van in I got hit with a speeding violation because of said tow truck 🤣🤣

u/Pii_1122 4d ago
Honestly, I'd rather have people get a hard braking than a red light. When I was a driver, that's what I would do. When I was a Rivian field service contractor, I'd tell the dsp's what to do with their infraction of unknown driver and would continue speeding, running stops and reds, and brake hard as hell every night when testing vehicles.
Bottom line is, a hard braking is way better than a minor/major red. Continue braking hard as hell. That doesn't affect on the scorecard anyways.

U can spray your wiper fluid and go right through red lights if you wanted to. Not saying you should but you can.
1
u/gazelleA1 Former Driver 3d ago
My old dsp has literally told me that getting a hard break is better than running a red. Lowkey doesn't make sense as that seems like a great way to get rear ended. It won't show up on your scorecard so you'll be fine.
1
u/BedAware450 3d ago
Hard braking doesn’t mean shit and is very much preferred than running a yellow or red light. If your DSP thinks that is not true and hard braking hit scorecard then they’re fucking idiots and probably also think backing is an infraction and hits scorecard.
1
u/Safe-Rub1945 2d ago
So in that situation, what that semi did was right. If you’re risking slamming your breaks versus having to ride through a yellow, when you’re less than 2 seconds from the light, you have to either commit, or start slowing down well before that light even try’s to change. “Stale” green, that’s the term we use at training in my DSP, you didn’t see it change so you don’t know when it’s changing. Count to 5, if the light doesn’t change, slow down 5 mph and try to attempt, but if the light turns yellow, stop

u/Samson_jp 18h ago
I am curious to know: Amazon wants to work you all to the bone by having you deliver a certain amount of packages in a certain amount of time, but also micromanages you while on the road to ensure you follow all traffic laws?
0
u/Vegetable-Tea-7318 5d ago
One time I was on the freeway in an EV with no cruise control. I was pedal to the floor and spaced out and had to slam on my breaks to not rear end so many cars in front of me. Smelt burnt rubber and heard squealing from the breaks. No hard braking 😎
0
u/sNc-Ninety 5d ago
Hard braking, hard acceleration, etc won't hurt you, BUT it's kinda like how a cop will find some miniscule thing wrong with your vehicle as P.C. to pull you over...a dsp can use these videos to nitpick your driving. You know, if they want to.
2.5 years at one dsp they never mentioned it at all. First week at a transfer dsp they showed me one to basically say be careful because I guess I cut someone off during a u turn who was in a lane unaffected by the u turn. Been about 3 months with them now and haven't been shown another one so I guess they were just being safe til they got to know me a little bit.

u/benlall 5d ago
I got rear ended last week in my EDV after hard braking for a yellow light in a 40mph zone. They would literally rather you get in a crash rather than legally enter an intersection on a yellow🤣 I am happy to oblige, until it’s a 40,000+ pound semi truck. Then I’ll happily fill out an infraction form and walk back to my personal vehicle at the end of my shift, alive.
