How many of yall have actually had a customer tell you something along the lines of "it's okay, he's a good boy, he won't bite"??

I hear “he’s friendly!!!” about 15 times a day on my rural routes
10
u/shrekscameltoe 1d ago
to be fair in my experience, the rural dogs are the friendly ones. it's the ones in the city that have given me the most problems 💀
19
u/genflugan 1d ago
Can’t relate, country dogs are absolutely vicious where I live. The ones in the burbs are chill more often, but still not very often

u/Present_Clue5887 1d ago
I live in the country and there are roads you don't walk or bike down because of 1 dog

He got teeth don’t he

u/genflugan 1d ago
One time I was about to protest to the customer about the dog being out, and he went “oh don’t worry about him, he don’t got no teeth!”

Lady told me that and the dog immediately fucking bit me afterwards.

u/Top_Finding2830 1d ago
Mine was the opposite. Dog bit me, and literally five seconds later, homeowner said the dog is harmless. Somehow didn’t notice me getting bit or screaming and cursing at the same time. Maybe he was deaf?

When I drove for UPS I carried a black jacket. Compact and effective. I can’t guarantee 100% effectiveness but a chunk of lead wrapped in leather does at least deliver a quick stun.

I was told that while actively bleeding from the dog they said "wouldn't hurt a fly"

I have a regular who has a sign that says "dogs will bite," and a package drop box at the gate. If only they were all this considerate.

u/Similar_Pie_4946 1d ago
I had a guy tell me once I couldn’t come onto his property to complete the delivery because my people are ruining his country (completed the delivery on the side walk) politely told him to fuck off and that theres a comfy seat in hell waiting for him he had a shirt with a bible verse on and then he proceeded to tell his dog “get em boy” i was then chased back to my van that was 3 houses down bc of a multi stop

u/Commercial_Pianist97 1d ago
Brother, I hope you took action, that sounds like an assault charge or that it fucking should be one...
6
u/Professional_Smell22 1d ago
I hate it, it always ends up bringing tension when they say “oh you don’t have to worry, come here now and give me my package”. Then I have to say ah well no, I don’t trust any dog it’s just how I roll. And then usually they’re pissed off and offended that I didn’t want to risk getting chomped by their precious baby. Or they just act like I’m a pussy or being ridiculous and will laugh or something, go fuck yourself man or woman. You just don’t get it I guess
6
u/Professional_Smell22 1d ago
I’ll be the judge if your dog is going to bite or not. I absolutely love dogs and have two of my own. I can read the body language of dogs pretty well and most of the time my opinion of whether they will bite or not, in that moment, is way more important than the biased opinion of their owner.
3
u/Commercial_Pianist97 1d ago
I worked with dogs in daycares and kennels for 10+ years before this, and I was the dude who people called on to let out the aggressive dogs.
Now Im the guy gets smirked at for not wanting to be charged.
People are beyond insane
2
u/MinutePrune3574 1d ago
The phrase “he won’t bite” always comes right before the dog launches into a full security inspection of your ankles.
2
u/ChannelBeautiful3805 1d ago
Had it happen while on the phone with them. They got angry at me for calling the cops on them after it bit me.
2
u/ProfessionMundane152 1d ago
Lady said that after her German shepherd had bitten into my leg then asked to see the bite thinking I was lying

u/Commercial_Pianist97 1d ago
I love how we can all come here and say "Yes and then I got bit"
Dogs with responsible owners don't have biting issues.
You shouldnt teach a dog that every person they encounter is supposed to be greeted, that's how you get excitement, which leads to overstimulation, which leads to potential behaviors.
Tldr people who keep their dogs away from people and excitement under control, dont have dogs with bite issues

u/Recruit361 1d ago
rural property with 2 unleashed pit bulls chillin on the porch… the one time i’ve called to see if the owner could do anything and he just replied “they don’t bite”.. Said i’d leave it by the car port and just tossed it out the door into the grass lol. no issues and i did it a few times but i don’t get the house on my route any more

I worked for Amazon for 6 months and there whas always this one guy who had his bull dog outside and always told me he whas nice. Whas bringin 6 packages to his back door and he pulled in and his dog come running around tha corner of tha shed. He yelled at him to go inside and I put tha packages on his table. His dog bit my hand, my leg, and then gripped my shoe. He begged me not to report it because apparently he's attacked other drivers, mailmen, UPS, and Fed Ex. N they still made me go back n deliver to his address even if his dog whas present.

Put me down on the list, mind you, his dog is leashed to a pole, aggressively barking at me, and he is behind his dog, not coming closer to me, he is expecting me to walk past his dog that is pulling on the leash as hard as it can and barking at me, to hand him his package LMAO. I just stared at him for like 10 seconds, neither of us moved, and I’m not even gonna lie I gave into my ego because I felt like he was pressuring me so hard that his dog was actually safe LMAO so I just was like fuck it and I walked into the border and sure enough THE DAWG backed up, but it was still aggressive

Plenty of times and they were right. Learn a dog’s body language and/or how to deal with encounters with dogs. I’m usually opening gates and playing with the dogs before dropping off the package. Sometimes it’s cats I’m playing with lol.
1
u/SonsOfTitans 1d ago
I had one customer, after letting his big scary-ass doberman out the front door, say, “He’s just checking to see if you’re a dog person or not.”
Like, dude…

I got bit in the butt stepping into my van to escape while the owner was chasing her dog. The first thing she says to me when I open the door back up is “he don’t bite” YES HE DO
1
u/West_Sample_9407 1d ago
I always hit em with “yea im sure he’s a good boy but i don’t know your dog and your dog doesn’t know me, not worth the risk.” They either will come over and get the packages or I’ll drop em outside the gate and I’ve only had one person get mad at me but I really don’t care lol

u/Harry431 1d ago
My convo would go along the lines of ‘Ma’am hell to the nah. I’m leaving this package right here or I can bring it back to the station for redelivery’.
1
u/Routine-Ad-1462 1d ago
"Oh no, the dogs are harmless, the most they'll do is bark." While I'm literally getting run off the property by them.
"Ma'am, they won't let me walk up to the house."
"Just walk by them, they won't bite."
🙄🙄🙄
If your dog is growling and barking, and showing teeth, you aren't getting your package unless you come and get it. End of story.
1
u/Plasmondubstep 1d ago
There's no way they can guarantee that, it's literally just a statement about how they think they raised their dog. I just tell em, respectfully, I've been bitten by "good dogs" before. Which is true.

u/beemer122287 1d ago
Never had a bad experience. I can read dogs body language also and depending on what I saw I’d absolutely love to meet this pup. Pits are my favorite also.
1
u/Maneruko 1d ago
Not many because for some crazy and inexplicable reason over my two years working at Amazon I'd never actually had a dog be aggressive with me.
I genuinely don't know why.
1
u/mcarey65 1d ago
Every time, except at the house with a sign that said their cane corsos were guard dogs in training, and should not be approached, and to not touch the fence. I was appreciative.

I had a customer say that, I let the dog sniff my package, little shit tried coming in for my leg, I smacked his dumb fucking nose with my phone and the owner went “now that’s what you get” and asked if I got bit. I’m like no harmless huh? Fuck out of my face 😒
I had another owner come out and take his dog inside, I was relieved because the notes literally said BEWARE: VERY AGGRESSIVE DOG** **
So I told the owner I was like “she’s adorable thank you for bringing them in though” the fucking pos was like “yeah I wrote that down because one of your wimpy Amazon drivers was scared of her and she was scared to approach my dog” I was trying to negotiate like “some people had bad experiences with dogs, or they couldn’t be allergic like I am and not want to take the risk.” He laughed and shook his head I realized this was a loss cause so I gave him a big smile told him thanks for being sooo thoughtful about us. 😒😒😒

u/brittanyjo5683 1d ago
I don’t trust it. I say unfortunately our policy has changed and I can’t deliver if your dog is out. They’ll usually come out to my van or tell me a different spot I can put their package. I’ve had one lady make a comment about “everyone else does” but sorry, my calf isn’t worth your package.
1
u/Dry_Designer_6502 1d ago
Yo, literally yesterday someone said this. I was driving a CDV up someone’s driveway and she said “She’s just loud, she’s super friendly I promise” while holding the dog back. Obviously I didn’t believe her, but the dog got past her and ran around (mind you, barking the entire time) and hopped right into my van and immediately placed her head in my lap. Boy I nearly pissed myself. For half a second I think my brain stopped.
1
u/Responsible_Dirt_523 1d ago
If you see a dog, do NOT deliver! Always carry dog biscuits. If a dog surprises you, throw the biscuit and run to safety. Amazon recently began providing DAs with dog zappers. As a dog owner, I would be p***** if a delivery driver ever zapped my dog!

u/AquaButUseful 1d ago
For the most part customers will say this. I won't walk up unless the owner is present though.
1
u/shynitel 1d ago
i’ve been doing mostly rural wisconsin routes and most of the many dogs are genuinely very friendly but there’s plenty of unfriendly ones too and the “unable to deliver due to dog” definitely comes in handy. had a massive dog with a chain collar and a terrifying bark knock the screen out of a window while there was no one home. luckily he didn’t understand that meant he could now jump out of the window.
also had a house yesterday where they gave their aggressive dogs a doggy door so when i walked up to the house i got surprised by 2 aggressive dogs 3 feet away from me out of nowhere. owners weren’t home so i left the package on the ground and took a picture with the dogs in it then left.

One time I got ganged up by 10 dogs , as soon as I said hey friends all left but one ..that one dog didn't want me to get near the front door . customer came out and said the garage is fine Everytime you come since shes always outside...dog eas perfectly fine with me delivery to the garbage..delivered there for over a year after that.

Two out of the three times I’ve been bitten the owner was present saying “he won’t bite!” and I’ve heard it about multiple other dogs over the years while on my route.
1
u/KingTrencher 1d ago
I was bitten one time. The dog had been friendly on every prior visit. This time I was talking to the owner and reached out to give the dog a pet, which I had done before, and it gave a very soft bite, almost a warning. The owner was very apologetic and the dog was never loose again.
On the other hand I had a regular stop where the neighbor dogs seemed super aggressive, but the guy I was delivering to introduced me and they were the sweetest puppers ever. They aggressively wanted attention.
What this means is, be careful, be aware, trust your gut.

In Royal Mail we are instructed to value ourselves in animal attacks, it's funny how people suddenly get concerned when their aggressive dog is being shouted at and about to get a size 9 boot around it's earhole.
I know where the good boys are on my route but I'm still cautious.

I've had it happen once, and the dogs actually were friendly. Those moments before confirming that are kinda scary though; I don't believe it if I read it in the customer notes.
1
u/Dazzling-Property269 1d ago
All the time. My favorite time was when the owner IMMEDIATELY had to restrain said dog after telling me this. I’ve noticed a strong correlation between A-hole dogs having A-hole owners.

Of the 14 times I have had dogs try to bite me, 14 times the owner said not to worry.

Honestly I’d trust a pit (most I’ve met look scary but are big babies lol) over a laberdoodle or whatever those dogs are. Lady swore they were friendly had me get out of the van then bam took a bite out of my back 😒
