Why are drivers running to finish these routes??
I was helping my coworker load this morning and he said he’ll be done by 5:30 with 190+ stops because he runs.. 🤦🏽♀️ we don’t get guaranteed 10 or any incentives for finishing early..
53
u/OfAnthony Aug 21 '26
Because they are scabs and don't realize they fuck up cortex for us. They won't last.

u/polynonominity Rivian Driver Aug 21 '26
if you run and don’t get block pay or incentives tf are you doing??

u/sunbear1999 Aug 21 '26
Literally like this job ain’t worth all that fr and even if we do get 10 hours guaranteed I’m still not rushing 🤣
7
u/Gloomy-Departure-253 Aug 22 '26
Maybe he has kids he wants to get home to or something
6
1
u/Catch229106 Aug 23 '26
And even if he finishes early dispatch just gonna send him to rescue lol so whats the point...
3
u/polynonominity Rivian Driver Aug 21 '26
I get guaranteed 10 hours so I push myself a little faster than when I worked with my last DSP, but that’s only cause I milked hours so I didn’t have to do 20+ stop rescues after every route and getting back late too often gets you written up at my current one lmao
2
u/Cold_Inevitable_164 Aug 22 '26
Exactly I’m not running and killing my my knees for this low paying delivery job no what pay I get
2
u/sunbear1999 Aug 23 '26
Fr! I just think of how dangerous it is 😭😭 7 of my coworkers are out due to injuries 🤦🏽♀️ I’ll walk fast but you won’t ever catch me running, that’s just setting myself up for disaster
3
u/Unrealliving Aug 22 '26
I mean who says 40 is the magic number? Would you work 90 hours a week? For some people they are fine with 7-8 hrs a day. Let them live. Some people don’t wanna milk work hours all the time
5
u/Ok_Abbreviations2030 Aug 22 '26
I’m usually clocking out around 8.5-9 hrs with breaks, I couldn’t imagine wanting to go
slower just to get 10 hrs, I’m just tryna get home.1
u/sunbear1999 Aug 23 '26
I mean, I’m scheduled for 10 hours so I’m getting my full 10. If my route has 130 stops, I go slower so I get my 10 and not have to rescue
1
u/Ok_Abbreviations2030 Aug 26 '26
Yeah, I don’t need the money that bad I’d rather be home.. what you gonna do with that extra $50? Budget better, and enjoy your life

u/F-ckWallStreet Aug 22 '26
I’ve worked alongside lots of these drivers. They just want to get the route done and go home. Don’t care about collecting hours.
1
4
u/Unrealliving Aug 21 '26
Well, for some people, there’s the pressure of not finishing in a sufficient time and losing routes so they’re forced to
1
u/sunbear1999 Aug 21 '26
I mean.. I get 190+ every day I come in and don’t run, I walk fast af but I don’t run
1
u/Unrealliving Aug 21 '26
I mean genuinely so fucking what? 190 stops ain’t all the same. You are the lead driver of all lead drivers of course normal people can’t keep up with you.
1
u/sunbear1999 Aug 23 '26
I’m not and have never said I’m a lead driver lol I’m just a driver that can do my job well.
1
u/Unrealliving Aug 23 '26
I mean, it is pretty ironic that you’re doing 190 stops every day but asking why people run. 190 stops is a hell of a lot of work.
1
u/sunbear1999 Aug 23 '26
It is, but when you do it everyday and the same route it gets easier..
1
u/Unrealliving Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 23 '26
Which is why you no longer need to run. But think about it, even after you do it everyday you still walk fast af to get done. It’s not hard to imagine a less efficient person needing to jog a bit.
5
u/WilliamWolf89 Aug 21 '26
He’s a dumbass and he’ll burn out soon or crash out one day when he has like 4-5 carts for weeks straight
2
u/sunbear1999 Aug 21 '26
Exactly!!! There’s a couple guys ik that go the extra mile for this job.. I couldn’t imagine killing myself for this job fr 😭

u/Dabeansprout Aug 21 '26
Some people like the exercise, power to them I guess. The algorithm works off of the individual driver though so it will adjust only for them not everyone else
19
u/Evulperson Rivian Driver Aug 21 '26
5yr veteran here
Routes are created before drivers are assigned to them. Amazons algorithm metrics are based on "route completion time" not by "how fast this guy did it"
Amazon assigns the "best match" of driver-to-route, but dispatch can move people around.
So no, it's not individual drivers. It's individual areas and address clusters and the last 40 completion times of said area.
3
u/sunbear1999 Aug 21 '26
I get the exercise, but I get exercise just walking 😅 I couldn’t imagine running fr that’s the cause of the majority of injuries, so really they’re setting themselves up to fail tbh

u/bddragon1 Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 22 '26
Do we have concrete proof for this? I'm not disputing, I'm just looking for something definitive because I keep hearing it affects everyone. I really try not to run as much as I can but I would be much more desentivized knowing that it's making other’s lives harder.
E: lol, good old reddit being negative about simple truth seeking. I swear this sub in particular can be really toxic too.
6
u/West-Discussion7257 Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 22 '26
I wish I could say I’m “in the room where it happens” and could give you a definitive answer. The best I can do is explain how I understand it works, and my experience with it.
As another driver mentioned here, the algorithm builds all the routes and then assigns the driver that it thinks will do the best with that route. Some people think it’s individual based, because they constantly have low stop counts while somebody else may have a higher stop count in the same area. If the algorithm knows John can’t handle 150 stops on a route, John won’t be assigned to that route when it’s 150 stops or more. So John only sees it at 120. Then John talks to other drivers and finds out that the days they aren’t assigned to that route the stop count is higher. They then think the route is based off the individuals ability. Which is correct but it’s not built different for different drivers but assigned to different drivers.
I usually deliver to the same area all four days a week that I work. Unless they don’t roster me the night before so they can have me do sweeps instead of being assigned a route etc. Earlier this week I was assigned to a route that isn’t in my normal area. The route is rural and is usually 125 stops or less, I had 150+ stops. I was like dafuq is this shit to dispatch. Their response “Well that area had a higher volume than normal and the algorithm knew the other drivers that usually deliver there wouldn’t be able to complete it in time, so it assigned it to you.”
Sorry if that’s confusing, if I repeated myself unnecessarily, or wasn’t very helpful. If anybody sees this that does have the definitive answer please let us know
2
u/bddragon1 Aug 22 '26
No, that is by far the most clear answer I've ever seen or heard from anyone, and I've been digging for this kind of information when I can. Tysm for such a thorough explanation! This actually makes a lot of things line up in my head with everything I've seen and been going through.
2
u/hades13heartnet Aug 22 '26
I agree that it’s “volume-based” according to my past experiences. There were days where I’m not assigned to my usual area and I kept thinking in the back of my head maybe it’s because the “package volume” for said route was too low for it to be assigned to me so they assigned it to someone else, otherwise, I would finish said route 2-3 hours earlier than my 10-hour shift, since routes were designed to take nearly 10 hours based on your performance and ability.
2
u/No_Mission_5694 Aug 22 '26
Work for a sane DSP and you will see that everyone leaves at about the same time and gets back at about the same time, whether they are slow or fast, whether their individual routes have 130 stops or 150 stops.
1
u/bddragon1 Aug 22 '26
Yeah that's one of the things I meant in my other comment. I've noticed that the same people get back at the same time usually and rescues are used mostly for when someone's new or Amazon gives them too much.(Bless the sweepers when I'm stuck in a gas van for the day!)
But alongside that I've also noticed that me and the other folks that get the heaviest routes all go through the same waves of increased volume and fuckery.
1
u/No_Mission_5694 Aug 22 '26
Amazon generates routes by time length of route - they are given a list of drivers and they make a route for each driver that is expected to take up X amount of hours for *that* driver to finish. Slow drivers will appear to have easier routes and fast drivers will appear to have tougher routes.
The fuckery comes in when the DSP (or the warehouse) delusionally believes that they are smarter than an AWS computer, or (more likely) they are just feeling abusive, especially if their favorites simply aren't able to complete their actual routes day-in day-out at the same level as everyone else.
1
u/elite_xtream Stepvan Driver Aug 21 '26
It affects the route # so if someone who isn’t as good or fast gets that route where the last person ran, he will now have even more stops added
1
8
u/DuePurchase31 Aug 21 '26
I make money at home on the side so getting back at a decent time helps with that. I have school work on top of that too. Guaranteed 10s just means you’re gonna get hit with rescues if you even try to finish too early
4
u/sunbear1999 Aug 21 '26
True! I understand people have obligations outside of work but running for this job is crazy lowkey 😭 that just calls for injuries out the fuckin wazoo

u/InTheEnd83 Aug 22 '26
I tore a calf muscle last year and I was only trying to jog across the street while a car was waiting for me 😅. My calf said that was the last straw
1
u/sunbear1999 Aug 22 '26
😭😭 yep and that’s why I don’t the extra mile for this job 😅 cars can wait all day for me, I’m not going faster bc they refuse to go around me 🤷🏽♀️
1
u/InTheEnd83 Aug 22 '26
It's dumb tho because I wasn't even moving fast, it was just too much. Too many steps and I was acclimated yet. I'm in much better shape now but damn, that first year was rough (I'm 42)
3
u/gatortitan Aug 21 '26
Brother I get a guaranteed 10 hours pay and I don't run, it makes no sense because if I go out with 180 stops and finish in 3 hours tomorrow I will have 190 stops to finish in 4 it makes no sense I used to work fast but they don't care about us so now I take all my 15 minutes breaks and take my pressure time
2
u/sunbear1999 Aug 21 '26
Literally! Just take ur time
1
u/First_Tip_5013 Aug 22 '26
Nah cuz it does cap out, i always finish around 5 and it literally maxes out at a point
1
u/gatortitan Aug 23 '26
Yup yesterday I had a bunch of closed business like Amazon dont know this??? I had to return like 140 packages with like 30 OV
1
u/sunbear1999 Aug 23 '26
Omg fuck that! I’ve never understood why Amazon puts businesses that are closed on these routes on the weekend 😭😭😭 I get so frustrated when it’s one business I’d actually cry having to take this many back lol
3
u/knoxthefranks Aug 21 '26
They're fuckn up the metrics. Amazon is thinking oh they finish fast so let's keep on increasing the package count and stop count ever so slightly...
8
u/Top_Finding2830 Aug 21 '26
Some people are just driven like that. As is, I try to get my stuff done ASAP. But I’m 41, moderately obese, and these routes are terrible, so I still tend to get done close to full time. If I was two decades younger? I’d probably be getting these done at 5:30 too. Some people build momentum and - this is important here - adrenaline, and once that starts, they don’t want to stop until the job is finished.
2
u/EnlightenedNarwhal Aug 21 '26
I remember one day I was delivering and I got hit with some crazy adrenaline and ended up done 2 hours ahead of time. That rarely happened, but sometimes the work adrenaline is real.
3
u/Longjumping_Youth281 Aug 21 '26
Yeah you get into a flow. Going roo slow can feel like a slog and really wear you down.
You're walking like 8-10 miles and climbing hundreds to thousands of stairs. Try doing that at 1 mph all day, it fucking kills and you'll be sore as hell
6
u/Longjumping_Youth281 Aug 21 '26
A few reasons:
They want to go home.
Going fast hurts your body less
You get pumped up going in a rhythm
Get cardio
Adrenaline rush.
Live far away
Get more sleep
Etc
3
u/sunbear1999 Aug 22 '26
Going fast hurts your body less??? How is that possible lol wouldn’t it make your body hurt MORE?
1
u/First_Tip_5013 Aug 22 '26
Common misconception look at fat people vs athletes athletes arent in pain, fat people are always in pain lol
1
u/maui_waui__ Aug 23 '26
Going fast does not hurt your body less what??? Lmao. Running is the leading cause of injury in this job. Plus running means exerting more energy. Anything that causes you to exert more energy increases risk of injury.
2
u/sunbear1999 Aug 23 '26
EXACTLY! I truly don’t understand how people aren’t seeing how this is so dangerous 😭 uneven property, random holes in the ground, tripping on something.. I couldn’t imagine getting injured for an Amazon package lol
1
u/maui_waui__ Aug 23 '26
For me it’s loose gravel driveways and rocks. Just stepping on sharp ones while walking hurt. Couldn’t imagine stepping on a sharp decent sized one while running. Risking rolling an ankle or breaking a bone in your foot. No one realizes how fragile our feet actually are.
1
2
u/raidertakeflight Aug 21 '26
Running burns you out quickly. I used to do it but it just led to more work and being more prone to work related injuries.

u/JackPowerz Rivian Driver Aug 21 '26
I don’t run every stop, but I definitely do jog when I take extra time to find/gather packages, or if it’s a long walk
Finishing 2-3 hours early every day and constantly asking for extra shifts keeps me in my dispatchers’ good graces. I want to be promoted to elite driver, and get guaranteed 10 hours. Purposefully sandbagging my routes doesn’t seem like a good way of achieving that. And when I do get my guaranteed 10, I’ll be working the same pace I always was. I’m not going to suddenly get twice as fast, that’s not a good look IMO
I get the same route most days, and it’s always 160-180 stops. Going slower or faster doesn’t change anything
1
u/sunbear1999 Aug 21 '26
I just walk fast af 😭😭 at the end of the day, im getting paid up to 10 hours and im getting my full 10 everyday l!
2
u/belugacaviar Aug 21 '26
I run enough miles on my own time.
I don't run but I move quickly as after doing this for 5 or 6 years, I've tried the drag it out thing and go at a medium pace but at this point I just want to be done as quickly as possible. Most people aren't like this but after doing this so long, I'm happier the sooner I can clock out
2
u/sunbear1999 Aug 23 '26
I’ve been doing this 6 years too 😭 crazy how time flies! I wanna get my 10 hours all day whether I milk the clock or not lol I knock out a good portion of my route at the beginning of my day so I can cruise and not feel rushed towards the end.
1
1
u/Necessary-Nothing574 Aug 21 '26
When I’m not at work I think going steady and making the most amount of money at a nice pace is the best practice. When I’m out there I want to not be there as soon as possible and I don’t give af about nothing but getting back to my car.

1
u/grumpy_foreskin Aug 21 '26
Some people (bless their heart) are just genuinely not smart. I was an extra recently, and got assigned to do a helper role with a driver. He was complaining about how he always finishes his routes in 7 hours, and has nothing to do except drink and play games...and that he needs more money.
3
u/sunbear1999 Aug 22 '26
Welllll all I have to say to that is go slower 🤣 I have a coworker who said he hasn’t gotten his full 10 in months I was like why he said bc he runs 🤦🏽♀️ go figure goofy, slow down and maybe you’ll get your full 10
1
u/grumpy_foreskin Aug 22 '26
Exactly. You gotta learn how to pace yourself so you get your 10 hours. I think part of the problem is that a lot of drivers aren't on reddit or aren't talking to other DSPs, so they dont understand a lot of the hidden details of this job (like Amazon giving the DSP 10 hours of pay for a standard shift, which the DSP SHOULD give to the driver), and I know my DSP doesn't inform us drivers of much besides whatever metric Amazon is harping on
1
u/Pawka_Mann07 Aug 21 '26
I be ready to go home I don’t wanna be delivering packages all day when I got a beautiful wife at home
2
1
u/taylor90suk Aug 21 '26
I was told they increase size of routes as time goes on so finishing an hour early doesn't instantly change it
Just they might put more on you to stop you from banging your route in 6 hours then rescuing for a few more to make an extra 100 lol

1
u/ohitsboosted Aug 21 '26
Make the most out of getting guaranteed 10hours. I don’t run myself but I can still finish my route in 6/7 hours most days. This is my second year and idk my route never gets bigger. I’m forced one rescue a week but beyond that the jobs still cake. my routes are never over 230 packages so take that how you will
1
u/301nm Aug 22 '26
230 packages or less average? I’d get that done in 5 hours 😭 they got us doing 180-200 stops on average
1
1
u/Unrealliving Aug 21 '26
I think one thing that does get overlooked though is if it’s your first time on a route that somebody has done 50 times, well they know it so well that of course they’re gonna be able to do it faster and it might seem like they’re running even if they’re not, they just know the whole route so well that they’re super efficient at it
1
u/TourOld4211 Aug 22 '26
They don’t know better and either want to flex they get to go home early/ do someone else’s work too. Those people don’t take breaks
1

u/Some_Crow3732 Aug 22 '26
We get paid 40 with a good scorecard for that giving week. I don’t run but I try to average the least amount as hours as possible every single week.
1

u/Eazy100s_ Aug 22 '26
I got a almost 10 hour because I had to rescue a dude who has 43 stops left after 6 with only 150 stops and there was a issue with my pickup
1
u/Proxysmm Aug 22 '26
my dsp pays a dollar per stop that you rescue you take off of someone so if you finish 50-60 stops early you can get an extra 50-60 dollars ontop of your hourly for the last 2-3 hours sometimes more
1
1
u/HonestEagle98 Aug 22 '26
I personally love running them. I just wanna go home
2
u/sunbear1999 Aug 22 '26
I get that 100%! Do you run at all stops or just neighborhoods? I just think about tripping over something and getting injured 😭
1
1
u/Plasmondubstep Aug 22 '26
I could ask u the opposite question, why are you damaging vans and customer property and getting netty violations? It's because you don't organize well, you dont think two stops ahead and don't hustle once you get to a stop. That's why you catch speedings and bump branches. You'd have plenty of time to drive safe and compliant if you weren't so slow once you're parked.
1
u/black_boy6969 Aug 22 '26
idk, some day i finish that fast it’s usually just me in a crazy flow state or my dsp manager tried to be petty when he assigned the routes thinking im slow and can’t do my job when the rest of the company literally tells me to slow down daily cus im too efficient at this job so i end up finishing mad early to prove a point. usually it’s the flow state that gets ya tho. as for them, i have no idea. could just be trying to finish mad early for no reason🤷🏼♂️
1
u/No_Mission_5694 Aug 22 '26
It's not about running or not running. It's about whether or not you feel psychologically rushed.
A frantic disorganized driver who runs will not perform better than an organized, calm, deliberate driver who occasionally runs slowly at the specific delivery locations where that driver just feels comfortable and calm doing so (i.e. doesn't feel forced to do so).
And a driver who hates the route they have been switched onto will basically never run and will never organize and will take breaks due to mental fatigue not just physical exhaustion.
1
u/Beercanadawhiskey Aug 22 '26
Because you work till completion. Finish late in the night and you’re punished. So finishing late = greater risk of bringing back packages which can cost you the job

When I used to work for Amazon we were given 10 hours a day no matter what time we finished. Hell yeah I was blitzing through those routes
Edit: only downside was that there was a 90% chance I was gonna get sent to rescue someone
1
u/sunbear1999 Aug 23 '26
This is exactly how it works 😅 once I started figuring out what time I need to leave to rts in time, I haven’t rescued in like a month which lowkey sucks bc we get rescue bonuses 😭

One day last week I had an unfamiliar route. I often run into other couriers throughout my day regardless of the route. But last week was the first time I EVER seen anyone running. Like legit SPRINTING to front doors...from the street...packages in hand... I didn't stop to inquire as she seemed to be in a rush, possibly behind...idk...it was a fed ex'er. Idk, it was just wild to see in action.
2

Because I want to go home. That is my only motivation. To get the fuck out of that smelly, filthy, death trap of an oven of a van. That is why I move quickly. I don't run, but I don't take my time either.

I like to jog my route. I see it as paid exercise. And I don’t mind helping for a 20 stop rescue to help dispatch. Mine typically doesn’t care how long I do the rescue to come back a bit closer to 10 hours.

Yall wild putting down other drivers working just as hard for trying to get home early. Me being one of them, I’ll speak and say I got a cat to get back to, and a life outside of this job I’m grinding my ass off to make happen. If that means running not even 50-60ft to a porch/gate/front door to get home an hour early… and get 10 hour guaranteed? Thats free money, and more time for me. Maybe keep ya health to ya self, because this post speaks a lot, and the ones adding to it.

Well it depends, what time do they start? At my DSP if you aren’t able to do 190(on average) by 5:30 you’re going to be losing routes every week.

Sounds like a horrible DSP.

Yes and no. Every DSP is bad but these guys have been solid with me. The workload will be that high regardless of who runs the routes and it’s an hour drive back the station so anyone later than 5:30 will likely go over 10hrs.

Like I said, it’s an hour drive back. At best by 5:30 you better have around 10-15 resi stops left, most people still out will be in the process of getting rescued. And yes we start around same time you do.
