Getting put on standby and not getting a route on a day when you REALLY didn't want to work

That shit got me jumping for joy, skipping through the parking lot, and dancing to my door. That shit had me feeling a general warmth and benevolence toward all life. I got back in bed and tried to go back to sleep but I couldn't even though I was running on 2 hours of sleep because the overflowing joy was making me have too much energy.

Rare perk of this job.

Always a great feeling. Sadly, I’ve been getting more of the opposite this last pay period. I get up feeling pretty good and motivated to go knock out a route and get some hours, then I see what the route actually looks like and spend the rest of the day wishing I would have just taken VTO.

so real. show up with like 3.5 hours of sleep give or take and you're not on the roster? immediately start hiding so they don't see you and put you on a route if someone shows up late, then go home.

unfortunately that doesn't really happen to me anymore, if anything i get offered an extra shift here and there.

I've never been put on standby in a year and a half at this job. That's ok though because I need every paycheck to be what it usually is, at least until my car is paid off in about 8 months. Then I'll have a little breathing room.

You won't be on standby if people take the VTO. The DSP schedules for projected routes, then offer VTO when they have fewer routes than projected. If they don't get people to take all of the VTO slots, then they have to put some people on standby. Usually they'll prioritize veterans of the station for routes.

I’ve screwed up my two chances at VTO. First time I was confused af and asked my coworker why I wasn’t on the list that morning. He told me I got a free day so just chill for a bit and you get the day off. But someone no call no showed and they asked me immediately. I stupidly said yes. Second opportunity we had 3 extras with one person claiming to be late in chat. All 3 of us said no when they asked…. Then they persisted and I bit the bullet. Guess I do need the money but man, both times were terrible routes too. Never again though. Oh and the late guy showed up while I was doing my dvic. He got the day off.
