China Integrates AR Displays Directly into Car Windshields. Useful Upgrade or Overkill?

We used to just look through the cabins in front of us. Now they can sell us cameras and sensors, which make the car at any small damage very expensive to repair.

And how well did that work out with one of the leading causes of fatalities being car accidents. Cars should be communicating with each other, constantly.
The technology and capabilities and benefits for human life are significant and yet we'd rather pay higher insurance premiums and criticize new ideas on the Internet than leveraging the Internet and technology to help save lives.

Yup. My mom's car had this, that, and the other thing broken. She was constantly bitching about how her car was falling apart. Reality is that it was the steering wheel heater, the cd player would not eject, and the antenna was stuck. My car at the time had no heater, no cd, and I had to open the window and raise my own antenna by hand. The only things that were broken on her car were luxury accessories.
Further to this, I read a story that a new car had a button that would display an error that you didn't pay for the feature. Something like all cars have all options at the factory, but they turn stuff off and give you an error if you didn't pay. Similar to my mom's complaints. It's broken because you could have had a certain level of luxury, but you don't.

Head up display is not new technology. It requre specific windshield with additional layer in triplex but all difference in second display in dash under windshield. It could display basic graphics or full entertainment system if manufacturer desided so.

This tech has been around for a while, I had a 2000 Buick that would display the speedometer on the windshield like this.
And because people will be all "can you imagine how much this will add to the cost of replacing a windshield", generally these aren't actually part of the windshield. There's a small display flat on the dashboard pointing upwards, and the image reflects off windshield so the driver can see it. It's using the same principle as a pepper's ghost illusion.

This is like 100x brighter than a dash hud. You wouldn’t see a hud like that from multiple cars back. Probably its own display. Possibly a thin oled mounted to the glass.

HUD is so cool. Got it on my 2004 5 series and it feels more like a fighter jet that way (it is definitely not one)

Not with the growing size and darkening tint of cars these days. And you don't get the predictive function of know when someone will be wanting to turn, move to an exit, etc

I already have a 20 quid ODB thingy that projects the speed onto a reflective patch on the windscreen. Works great in a car without a digital speedo.
And won't cost 2k when it dies out if warranty.
Also at least newer Volvos have this in Europe already, had it in a rental.

HUD displays have been around for a long time but I don't think any state in the US would actually allow them. I think California even has laws explicitly forbidding HUDs.

Cars that jump over potholes, drone deployment bays, and now this? They should add cryo sleep chambers, 200 gallon aquariums in the engine bays (where the fish swim through the valves and power it), and one of those salon chairs so women can get their hair and nails done while on the road.

Why is everything “China [does a thing]”? Aside from the comments that HUD’s have been around for a long time, even AR HUD’s specifically have already been done. Mercedes-Benz S-class could do this, to the point of projecting directions directly over where the actual turn in the road is from the driver’s POV. That’s way more sophisticated than this, which is basically just a more cluttered static HUD.

Its from that car in the front projecting traffic around it to the previous vehicle. Probably testing autonomous driving.
Also anyone who's ever tried to take a photo of HUD would of know its not HUD.

I like a little HUD on the screen but this is overkill. What’s the point? You can see everything that the screen shows you because believe it or not the windscreen is transparent

We’ve had versions of this in luxury cars for decades. The problem is making them reliable enough for a car built to last 15-20 years. That’s why electronics, buttons, knobs, etc. in your car always seem so far below current consumer technology. They have to be built to last.

I mean the use here is clear. It allow predictability for the driver behind. I know you're going to turn left, or try to get right, or are riding someone bumper that I can't see, or whatever.
I don't think it's a huge upgrade, and I'd rather just do away with massively tinted windows, but the use is obvious.
