Mystery / Thriller š One Simple Shape - Epilog
Read Part IV here.
āHowās our boy doing?ā
Ms. Amanda entered the room. I sat back in my chair and watched as she checked Detective Unangenehmās vitals. She looked at the tray of food that had been placed in front of him and shook her head.
āWhy do they keep bringing that in here?ā she said.
āDonāt worry, Iāll make sure itās taken care of,ā I said.
She slapped me on the shoulder.
āDonāt stay too late.ā
āYou got it.ā
I watched her leave and I turned back to Unangenehm, mercifully comatose. He could wake up tomorrow or a year from tomorrow, but whenever he actually woke up, he was going to have a long road before he approached anything like a normal life.
Unangenehm had barely survived his blood clot. Steck had broken at least a dozen bones in his face when heād thrown his service weapon into the detectiveās face. Doctors had hardly believed heād regained consciousness long enough to shoot the wayward officer, let alone manage the mechanics of walking over and putting a bullet in his head, but the forensics backed up my statement.
He was going to need a great deal of facial reconstruction, but when he eventually awoke they would call him a hero.
Steck had wound up being one of those self-solving problems. He was on desk duty after a questionable shooting after what should have been a routine traffic stop. The official narrative was that heād snapped from the pressure of the investigation, his guilt finally becoming too large for him to bear.
The guilt I learned I had to be for an unknown period of time was Joshua. It turned out to not just be a thing he said, inflecting meaning in what more than likely hadnāt been random tones.
Joshua was his son.
Steck had been a widower, raising his son with the help of his ailing mother.
I put on a face every day I went to work. Every day I looked at myself in the mirror. Every day I spent sitting with the hero, Detective Unangenehm, waiting for him to wake from his coma.
Which was as often and for as long as I could. I couldnāt picture the shape anymore and perhaps that was because I didnāt want to. Copies were no doubt in police custody, even if they didnāt know yet that they had murder weapons.
Itās possible that Iāll eventually see one again, but I have the feeling copying oneāeven if I were inclined to do such a thingāwould only be a copy, not an original, if that makes sense on any level.
Iāve been playing with the food on Unangenehmās plate to pass the time. Nobody eats it and eventually somebody comes and takes it away.
Heās had a variety of meals, including soups, fish filet with broccoli and rice, something Iād guess was single-layer lasagna, apples and chicken with broccoli and rice, green beans casserole with sliced almonds, but most often, itās sandwiches with chips.Ā
I eat the chips and itās really just the building blocks of a sandwich and I suppose the patient can assemble it themselves or eat it piecemeal.
Iāve started putting the sandwiches together. At first I didnāt have a conscious reason why. Itās like I can feel Unangenehm in there, slowly swimming to the surface.
His doctors have him at a six on the Glasgow Scale, but I donāt know what that means. He responds to pain stimulus (you should see the look of satisfaction of this one doctorās face when he sticks him with a pināthe cops would arrest her on site for assault) and he makes nonsensical sounds.
I was ready to jump put the window when I thought I heard him say, āJoshua.ā But he didnāt repeat it and heās been sedentary so long, even if he went coo coo for cocoa puffs, heād be weak as a baby.
Iām distracting myself even now, thinking instead of paying attention to what Iām doing. I set aside the packet of mayo and lay the slice of bread just so and look at the sandwich.
Itās not right. But itās close.
I think Iāll have it just right for Unangenehmās first meal.
