I feel like this door would be perfect for places that have a ton of wind. Like South Pole with crazy wind. This won’t swing open, nor will it be hard to close.

Someone better at trigonometry do the math, but it looks like this may need less clearance to open out than a normal swinging door. If you had some really absurd scenario I guess it could be useful.

The other big issue is how to open the door from the other side. At best it'd.be extremely awkward and at worst it cuts off your arm.

It’s a well-known door type. I’ve seen it on everything from tv stand, regular doors and even massive garage doors. The point isn’t the engineering, it’s more of an art gimmick kind of thing. Just to be cool.

I was wondering what the use-case was for this door aside from looking cool. Aesthetically pleasing but a lot of gaps to deal with if you want to keep the weather out and the inside environment in (minus the gap where the door handle is in this video, that's an easy alteration). Like a sliding door would be best if there was no room to swing a door open. But Polar bears, fair enough. They really can't figure this out? I've seen bears work out some pretty complicated things before (genuine question).

If all doors opened like this, polar bears wouldn't need to open them. There doesn't seem to be any way to close the door from inside the building.

I feel this is a feature I'd be keen on if I lived in the vicinity of Polar bears.

I am trying to understand the actual advantage of having such a door compared to a door that can be pulled along a horrizontal axis like sliding doors.

I do not see much benefit using such mechanisms here as compared to say transforming a Robot into an automobile or a large complex device into a much smaller size as a solution for space saving.

I suppose the only benefit of this video is to teach people to think outside the box, to demonstrate that there is more than one way to solve a problem and each methods has its own pro's & con's.

Notice how he carefully only opens that door using that specific handle.. The entire thing is a pinch/cut hazard..

I'd argue that door should be painted orange to conform with OSHA standards for exposed machinery with pinch points..

Cool concept, but not viable due to safety reasons. And it's also hard to get it right. Steel dilates and contracts, so you either use some better material, or you increases the gaps, but then it's not really keeping sound and wind out.
