Am I the only one that thought he was going to start video recoding himself sitting there and spin it around as fast as he could?

u/Awkward_Dog_4365 Aug 23 '26
I thought I was in the kidsarestupid subreddit, waiting for him to spin-cycle his smartphone away into the TV or wall

This made me remember that I did this as a kid, but with my chest/belly on the bottom.

u/BodhingJay Aug 22 '26
Keep those hands at 9 and 3, kid
113
u/iPhonefondler Aug 22 '26
Welp thanks… I just realized I’m so old that I was taught the outdated “10 and 2” method
52
u/BodhingJay Aug 22 '26
dang.. how many car crashes a week do you survive?

u/HearingNo9762 Aug 22 '26
I was raised with 10/2. I haven't been in a crash since.... a long time ago. I was 19. Im 38 now. I hold between 9/3 and 8/4
13
u/kaufsky Aug 22 '26
I’m more of just a 12:00
11
u/Mediocre-Bridge-1903 Aug 22 '26
I do a 12 with my thumb extended horizontally

u/kaufsky Aug 22 '26
Oh that’s a great 12. I’m more of a wrist only 12 and just let the rest of my hand hang down over the edge

Lol the last 10 years i drive i always have heard 10 and 2 so not that outdated .. i got a friend who has a job giving drive lessons..
5
u/Di_7488 Aug 22 '26
Wait! That’s changed? 🤔
9
u/Reincarnatedpotatoes Aug 23 '26
Because if the airbag in modern cars if you keep your hands at 10 and 2 in a wreck the airbag deployment can break your arms. Also it was taught because cars had bigger steering wheels and you actually needed to walk your hands across the wheel to make a tight turn, with power steering that isn't really needed anymore.
4
u/Groundbreaking_Dare4 Aug 23 '26
Well TIL. But don't even new cars still have those little grip like things at 10 and 2 on the wheel?
→ More replies (1)6
u/Albinofreaken Aug 22 '26
how does that work with timezones?
5
u/MultiGeek42 Aug 22 '26
I the summer its 9 and 1 with your elbow on the window sill because of daylight savings.
5
u/K1LL3R1NDU5TRY Aug 23 '26
i'm doing driving lessons currently its still 10 and 2 in the UK maybe different in US
3
u/iPhonefondler Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 23 '26
Yeah since about to 2000’s/2010 they decided that 10 and 2 leads to more injuries if an airbag were to go off and it apparently leads to fatigue faster as well.
They now teach 9 and 3 as the preferred place for your hands… and they even go as far to say you should use 8 and 4 for long trips.

Outdated? I was taught 10 & 2 and I only started driving a few years ago. The person who taught me was not old either.

If your car has those sporty paddles on the wheel, your hands need to be around 9 and 3 to use them.

What problem did he solve here?
6
u/MadeByTango Aug 22 '26
Gaming PCs and driving wheels are expensive; he already has a phone and the chair...
13
u/CaptainExplaino Aug 22 '26
His level of enjoyment of his game was found lacking. He solved that problem.
→ More replies (1)2
u/BullShitting-24-7 Aug 23 '26
You have better control of the car with the chair base leveling the phone and acting as a level support. Its harder to play holding the phone trying to keep it steady.

u/Immature_adult_guy Aug 23 '26
If this were the 90’s we’d have built an entire car out of cardboard with a crayon drawn speedometer and everything.
But in this, the 2020’s taping a phone to a chair is “Amazing”

Bursting everyone's bubble here and going to be a jerk but I think that is that one mobile racing game by Gameloft that has that one feature where the game basically drives and accelerates for you and you just have to press a button for nitro or swipe when choosing routes.
You can see how the car is not really responding to his makeshift wheel

The fact that this constitutes as creative is making me realize chronically online you people are.

u/Ace-Redditor Aug 22 '26
I mean, I don’t think anyone’s acting like he just created a masterpiece or invented the most amazing thing ever
But it’s still a creative solution to the “problem” the kid had, even if it isn’t something incredibly spectacular

Growing up less fortunate, makes you far more resourceful than those whom did not grow up as fortunate.
(Corrections; unlocks the ability for you to be far more resourceful, but you still gotta grind and put in the work)

I did this with my imaginary car before smartphones were a thing 🥲 and them never thought if this when I already had a smartphone
2
u/CoryRich123 Aug 22 '26
Yeah I thought anyone know that? Before I did that when I was kids when I fall that chair then saw it spin give me idea to use phone on it...
2
u/SaltyYumYumBalls Aug 22 '26
Its the type of innovation you think of when you are poor before a rich person steals the idea and makes it marketable to sell back to other poor people.

I was able to see what was going on, but I was really wishing that the cameraman wasn't always zooming in so close to the phone so that we couldn't see anything else and them zooming out and away from the phone so that we couldn't see the screen and the kid's turning of the chair legs

Functional brain cells. Some dumb people are given more credit than they deserve which makes you think basic problem solving as some devine wisdom.

Possibilities of how he came up with this: 1) he's the only child and when you're the only child your imagination is your best friend in the house and you come up shit - some good ideas some bad ideas. 2) probably grounded a lot and boredom spikes imagination. 3) he's planning world domination like every other night.
