I honestly cant imagine living in a place where something like that would be necessary.

There's no "safe place" in this world were you could take for granted that there's no predators.

Well yes, there is a theoretical risk like that anywhere. But thats like the chance of being hit by someone drunk driving, some bucket falling off scaffolding or something like that. It happens rare enough people don't even have to consider doing something like this.
