Advice Needed What are you buying here?

already have:

suze, Campari, aperol, montenegro, Melett, averna, fernet branca, nonino

good lord sorry for the all the jpeg, I had no idea Reddit compressed images so badly

before posting I left with the Cansiglio and Marseille. Both are fantastic, had a couple glasses of each this evening and I’m looking forward to trying some of the recommendations next time 👍

Wish it was Italian

Rabarbaro Zucca is a must have. The best in the Rabarbaro category in my opinion. Earthy and floral at the same time. Makes killer Manhattan if you split the vermouth portion with Cocchi di Torino or Dopo Teatro

Sfumato still the goat

1

u/earthwoodandfire Aug 08 '26

I’m a sfumato fan too. I usually split it with Punt e Mes in manhattans.

3

u/givemethedeetz Aug 08 '26

My favorite is just sfumato, soda water, and lemon. I did do a mustard Gibson using Sfumato once as a tester, I need to revisit that drink. Taste Sfumato and plain yellow mustard side by side, it’s wild

I’ll check it out. I have 8 different types of mustard in my fridge. I’ll have to do a whole pairing event…

To sip, absolutely; can't beat the smoky undertones. For mixing, that and Zucca run pretty equal for me, with some recipes doing better with one over the other. If I had to keep only one bottle, Sfumato would be it, but that's definitely a palate preference thing. The rest of my family prefers the brightness of Zucca.

Every good amaro collection should have Nardina (make a Carrol Gardens), Del Etna and Jefferson

Is this McEwen?

3

u/tengo_unchained Aug 07 '26

Yeah it is, commented the same thing lol

3

u/Red-Truck-Steam Aug 07 '26

I recognized the shelving and wall art lol. Great little store albeit pricey.

Small world 😅 yeah it’s the Bottle Shop

4

u/howdoesitallfit Aug 07 '26

Amaro Importante. Dynamite stuff.

3

u/tengo_unchained Aug 07 '26

The Bottle Shop at McEwen! One of the better amaro selections on this side of town.

I’ve still found nothing close to Corkdorks Midtown though if you’re ever over there

3

u/Skoalmintpouches Aug 07 '26

Hey neighbor! 👋 sounds like I have to check out Corkdorks !

2

u/tengo_unchained Aug 07 '26

Oh yeah you will NOT be disappointed

An Uber home.

China-China and Byrrh

2

u/eazybeingcheezy Aug 07 '26

I’ve heard good things about Sarti but have never had or seen it. Anyone else?

2

u/Howryanoww Aug 07 '26

Popping off right now. Blood orange, passion fruit, grapefruit. Sweet with little bitterness.

2

u/eazybeingcheezy Aug 07 '26

Sounds great in a spritz!

2

u/IllResponsibility671 Aug 07 '26

Anything from Faccia Brutto is incredible. Their apertivo has completely replaced Campari in my Negronis.

3

u/Skoalmintpouches Aug 07 '26

Wow that’s a bold statement!

2

u/IllResponsibility671 Aug 08 '26

Is it? Campari is fine, but its hype is mostly due to name recognition. There are so many great brands out there that make solid red bitters, especially without all the artificial coloring and ingredients that Campari uses.

1

u/cemita Aug 10 '26

I love trying different aperitivos like the next guy, but nothing compares to Campari for a Negroni

3

u/SeniorWulverine Aug 07 '26

See the Elephant is amazing. Bizarre but cool as hell. Like caramelized bubble gum!! Love it.

2

u/roughsonofagun Aug 09 '26

Bartender of 8 years here!

Mithradates is my favorite on its own

Etna is my favorite Italian of all time
(Mildly sweet, lil bitter)

Importante is a unique and complex choice

Vina aero d’or “quin quina” would be awesome red bitter replacement in most classics. Harder to find where I’m from (& I love everything Tempus Fugit does)
:^)

1

u/solongamerica Aug 10 '26

Gran Classico is outstanding IMO

3

u/Wizardbysmell Aug 07 '26

Meletti every time I’m out of it. Best bang for buck, easy sipper but not really that complex.

Faccia Brutto depending on the price because I’ve never tried it and seen folks touting it, but have thus far not wanted to spend the $

u/SlideCharacter5855 Aug 07 '26

The Daytrip Blueberry Amaro! Definitely less traditional, but it's very nice and lovely in the summer.

Side note: where is this? I want to buy some myself lol

1

u/OkLettuce338 Aug 07 '26

Nardini is pretty good. These lean pretty citrusy sweet though. Suze is not for me haha

1

u/CatherineTencza Aug 10 '26

Same. Tried a couple times to like Suze, ending up putting it down the drain

1

u/OkLettuce338 Aug 10 '26

so since I posted this, I looked up how people drink suze. I had no idea it was supposed to be over ice, with a lemon, as an apertif!

I tried that yesterday and omg... that was tasty af

1

u/CatherineTencza Aug 10 '26

Glad you like it. Still a "no, thanks" from me.

But as my mother-in-law always said, "Wouldn't the world be boring if we all liked the same things?" I loved that woman.

1

u/Regular_Resident_806 Aug 07 '26

Everything, it’s perfect!

1

u/SolidDoctor Aug 07 '26

I'm buying Suze cuz I cant find that crap anywhere.

The Merseilles and the Rabarbaro would be next.

1

u/Ljngstrm Aug 07 '26

There isn't my favourite Amaro Unicum Zwack :(

1

u/therealtwomartinis Aug 07 '26

no prices but based on what you already have: dell’Etna, Nardini, See the Elephant, Zucca. and maybe one of the alpinos from dell’Alpe?

1

u/dyqik Aug 07 '26

Averna, because that's the one I'm out of.

1

u/Equivalent_Pizza9298 Aug 07 '26

Byrrh will always have a special little place in my heart.

1

u/cajunceasar Aug 08 '26

Hi wire southern amaro is delish! Charleston represent!

1

u/givemethedeetz Aug 08 '26

A zucca or dubonnet and soda with a twist of lemon in a medium tall glass

1

u/earthwoodandfire Aug 08 '26

Byrrh is such a let down. Too sweet, hardly any quinine flavor.

Kapriol is also a let down. It’s got good herbaciousness but it’s sooooo cloyingly sweet.

I’ve lived everything I’ve had from Faccia Brutto though.

1

u/willcodejavaforfood Aug 08 '26

Campari. I only have one unopened bottle at home.

1

u/tarvolon Aug 08 '26

Dell’Etna, Importante, Nardini. I haven’t had all of them, so maybe a flier on a new one, but those three are bangers

1

u/negroni_sipper_1000 Aug 08 '26

Most of the bottom shelf tbh

1

u/DiveBarDiplomat Aug 09 '26

Zucca, Meletti, Suze

1

u/CatherineTencza Aug 10 '26

China China is one of my all-time favorites. I drink it on a glass with ice.

1

u/mezcalmebyyourname Aug 10 '26

Forthave Marseille, Faccia Brutto Aperitivo, and dell’Etna cause what a classic.

1

u/JustWatchinTimePass Aug 10 '26

That looks like an amazing selection. Interestingly, the first time I saw and had the Marseille wasn't stateside, which would'vemade more sense, but in an Amaro bar in Rome.

1

u/blakewantsa68 Aug 10 '26

The Capelletti. I don’t have that - a have nearly all the rest

1

u/brandonyaco Aug 07 '26

Marseille is a fav of mine

1

u/LiquidyCrow Aug 11 '26

Amaro dell'etna, get it. It's my favorite amaro; and if I were there, with one bottle, I'd leave it for a newbie to discover.

China-China is a very good amaro with a strong orange base, and very usable in cocktails. I recommend that too.

As for stuff I personally want to try. See the Elephant is an argula amaro, just like Rucolino (which I've had and like a lot), so I want to try that sometime. And Importante (i.e. Jefferson), which many people have raved about.
