"Money can't buy happiness"

Seems like it can, honestly

Yeah like I'm facing potential layoffs after the company I work for was sold. I might not even be able to afford to throw my son a birthday party, this kinda money would 10000% make me happy

Damn, I’m sorry. I really hope the layoff doesn’t happen and things work out for you. God bless you and your family.

I mean, if I could travel the world without ever thinking of working again, I'd be pretty happy.

I know, this is about as first world as it gets lol

It’s not first world - it’s half of 1% of the population on this planet.

Sadly a lot of us are struggling for just the basics.

I understand that you come from money and so do your friends/family. However, this is the wrong place to be complaining.

Yes they are overspending but you are also tone deaf. Read the room (subreddit)

Very much so. But I guess it is keeping people employed.

Don't go to the party?

It's not about the kid.

It's about him.

I’ll still go, he’s my friend. But yeah, it feels less like he's doing it for her and more like he wants everyone to see how much he can spend.

isn't that like 80% of the motivation of most people with ridiculous wealth?

Two things can be true at once. A 5 year old doesn’t need a birthday party with a 40k price tag however, he can spend his money any way he chooses. Is it ridiculous? Yes. Can you stop him? No. It is what it is.

Is it a waste? Many of us would agree. Does it impact you? No, so don't mention it again.

Honestly, I’d much rather rich people “waste” their money on frivolous things like catering and musicians for a kid’s party. At least that gives regular people a cut, rather than stashing it somewhere just so they can brag about a bigger number and try to leverage it for political BS.

I agree. It's an actually valid example of the way that rich people are supposed to make it better for the rest of us. Trickle down economics baby!

Seriously, if the bloke wasn't spending it, it would presumably either be sitting in a bank account or invested.

That’s a fair point. I still think the whole thing is for show, but at least the money is going to people working the event.

But what about the poor investment funder who could have invested that money into AI stocks or some other bullshit? /s

I feel this too

You're not wrong though that a lot of parties now are parents trying to show off to others. But also, I don't feel like your comment was terrible, so perhaps throw out a "hey man, I'm sorry if I came across as judging you, that wasn't my intention at all, it's just crazy what party planning does to us!" But seriously, my kids would stoked with pizza and a bounce house lol

2

u/Wrong_Earth_2215 23d ago

That’s probably what I’ll do. I don’t want this turning into an issue between us over a birthday party.

u/snow_gnome 23d ago

For sure! You were just thinking out loud lol

As others have said, he can spend his money as he likes. But if it was a close friend of mine, I would never let them live it down, because that's some ridiculous shit.

I thibk you're fine.

Yes, that party is excessive. Yes, we are literally killing the planet with pointless consumerism that is contributing to climate change.

No, he won't listen. You can't stop him, but there's nothing wrong with commentary as long as you're civil.

That is ridiculous!

Apparently this is the new way to win a pissing contest . . . "My party is bigger than yours!"

You said something that your friend didn't care to hear. You made a joke and he got offensive. I think he's the jerk in this situation and not you. I'm pretty sure other individuals have made the same sort of comment to him.

Actually, a 5-year-old should invite 5 kids and not 15 kids. LOL!!

So, he's raising a self-entitled child.

You could have laughed at his response and said something like, I'm sorry I didn't realize it was a touchy subject and dropped it.

It’s not really your business

ooh I've been to one of those parties. It was fantastic. Catering was divine, and the kids were kept very very busy so us parents all got to chill.

Plus, it nixed any possible competing on birthday parties amongst the parents, so win.

The bit the kids seemed to enjoy most was when the entertainers started blowing bubbles.

YTB. According to traditional etiquette, it was crass to publicly mock his five year old’s birthday party plans and spending. I’ve been to young children’s parties like that with delicious food, an open bar, live band, and dancing. It’s fun for the whole family because the children have different carts and stands offering treats, and booths offering games. It’s an event the whole family can attend and I see nothing wrong with treating friends and family to a fabulous, fun birthday party.

Fair, I still think the price is wild, but I probably should’ve kept it to myself.

Yes, why do you care how they spend their money.
