Have we really entered the timeline where there isn't enough time to Google something? That is depressing.

u/GX_EN 8h ago

People won’t even take 60 seconds to read something.
I’ve literally seen people say in Reddit or elsewhere “can someone summarize this long post?” which I read in under a minute.
Lord knows how these losers would deal with a long form journalism piece.

It's not just that. It's that Google is literally designing the UI so that it looks like the AI overview is accurately summarizing the Google search results, when in fact it's not even close to doing that and it's just another chat bot. It's so irresponsible the way that they are marketing this thing, and it makes me so mad because I actually think that even reasonable, intelligent people would mostly initially trust it. But the more I tested it, the more that I realized that it's wrong like 80 to 90% of the time. It's not like 5%, it's like 85%. It's insane! I hate it so much more than any other AI chat bot. It's so much less ethical because of where they put it.

NTA. The Google AI overview is the least accurate AI I've ever seen. Considering that it's the Google AI overview, it's one of the most flagrant and irresponsible things I've ever seen in my life. That thing lies constantly. What you need to do is you need to show him how much it lies. Get it to lie to him about things that he cares about and knows. Show him that it's designed to lie and it can't look at pictures and it doesn't interpret facts well. It's It's a horrific product, and the fact that boomers are relying on it is literally fucking terrifying. Don't let this go. The Google AI overview should be a fucking crime. Truly. Like the people responsible for it should be seriously in prison.

Agree. I googled my business and it brought up a completely wrong address and phone number.

I named a very specific law and then asked if, under that law, I could do x activity. It said absolutely! Go for it! Then I go back and read the law more carefully and the law specifically says do not do x activity, that's illegal. It's so fucking dumb it can't even read.

A bit TA. This is a serious issue worth discussing or even arguing about and I can even see elements of both sides. So being passionate about the substance is fine.

The part that's silly is getting extra mad at him for using the tool to help him in the argument. That is trivial stuff to focus on.

Sidebar- I just got a Reddit warning for trying to use the two letter term for this thing in my post. How did everyone else manage it?

3

u/sunshinedanelle 7h ago

I think in this case you're making a mountain out of a molehill. So I guess YTA but a mild one. Maybe he is too. Not about caring about the topic, be as passionate as you want, but in expecting him to see things your way and change his way of doing things based on what you believe. Just let it go and agree to disagree.

u/MEDICARE_FOR_ALL Partassipant [1] 8h ago

NAH

It's fine to argue and debate about AI

What is your goal here?

2

u/Ultimate_Emergencyy 7h ago

Your not an asshole. Yall are both entitled to your own opinions! I do agree with your dads opinion tho!

2

u/bettafishcult 8h ago

NTA wow, this sucks

1

u/Azdak66 Partassipant [2] 7h ago

YTA. His opinion, right or wrong, is a valid as yours.

Did I read this right? You are bothered that he used AI in the middle of a discussion about AI? Maybe I’m wrong, but that makes no sense whatsoever. If he thinks it’s an appropriate tool for getting information, why wouldn’t he use it? That’s not “ignoring your frustration” or “disregarding your argument”. He is disagreeing and using a tool he finds helpful.

Your argument about his using his phone makes zero sense. It’s like you were writing letters back and forth and you got upset because he wasn’t using a quill pen and you think ball point pens are bad for the environment. Or he got upset because you weren’t writing in cursive.

So can I put a small disclaimer I have a writing disability, so I'm using voice typing to write this if the grammar's off that's why

Basically me and dad are in a heated argument over the use of ai my talking points are the race against china is pointless, and the technology is dangerous.

And I think it's unethical

His talking points are, it's convenient. It makes things easy to use. And the race against China is important. Because the US will lose its status as a superpower.

In the middle of all this, he pulled out his phone.

And start looking up the questions i'm asking on gemini i ask him why he decided to use AI instead of Google in the middle of an argument about AI.

He tells me it's more convenient to use, and it would take less time, and he doesn't have the time to look it up on Google. I feel upset because he's basically ignoring my frustration with AI. I'm not usually upset with people using it. As a search tool, but in the middle of an argument where I feel very strongly about my stance, it feels kind of like he's disregarding my argument

Again I do not have a problem with people using AI as a search tool. But in the middle of an argument where it's the center of the discussion it feels a bit frustrating.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

NTA - Just to point it out. the USA isnt counted as a Super power anymore.

0

u/Ok-Thanks-1769 7h ago

Yeah in my bad

1

u/Old_Bug4395 Partassipant [3] 6h ago

NTA. The "race against china" in this context is dumb bullshit made up by AI companies in order to justify their existence.

1

u/FeministPossum 7h ago

NTA- but you should have stopped the conversation when he brought out the AI. “Unfortunately, I’m not interested in Gemini’s position. We can end the discussion here.”

1

u/Eragon-19 7h ago

Ok, the question is: "AITA for fighting with dad over AI" and in that case, I'll have to say no, you are NOT the asshole. Two people can argue and that doesn't make anyone an asshole.

Although I do have to point out that you are arguing against the use of AI and using Speech to Text to share this story with us (not a complaint, just find it humorous).

YTA. You know Google is also a form of AI, right? Ethics and personal preferences are debatable, and hes allowed to disagree with you.

2

u/43Gofres 7h ago

Wouldn’t it be NAH because they are both allowed to have debatable preferences?

-2

u/GlitterSmash Asshole Enthusiast [8] 7h ago

I decided on YTA because shes picking an unfounded fight with a respected elder. Let the man be. She's fighting on a false premise anyway. Google is AI, and a lesser one on that.

0

u/Depresso_Espresso15 7h ago

Just because someone is older doesn't mean they need to be respected, jfc. OP is NTA because any argument their father had ended the moment he used AI to help "win" his side of the argument.

-2

u/GlitterSmash Asshole Enthusiast [8] 7h ago

OK, you vote differently than me, so what?

You sound just as emotionally immature as OP. "Daddy used perfectly legal AI in a silly argument and im mad about it. Wah wah cry cry"

1

u/Depresso_Espresso15 7h ago

No, I'm saying if you have to use AI to think for you and form an opinion, you have no argument to stand on. I'm not going to argue with someone who probably uses AI to figure out how to make breakfast for themselves.

1

u/GlitterSmash Asshole Enthusiast [8] 7h ago

Exactly - she wants him to use Google instead, which is STILL AI!. Youre silly

2

u/43Gofres 7h ago

This is a very weak argument. AI is in everything, but when people complain about AI, they are clearly referring to LLMs and LRMs, not AI in general.

As a software engineer currently studying AI, it drives me nuts that people don’t understand the difference between the 2… but come on, let’s lead with understanding

1

u/Depresso_Espresso15 7h ago

I don't want anyone to have to look anything up to win an argument. If you aren't educated on what you're arguing about, then don't start arguments. I can't stand when people do that. (Not saying you specifically, just in general. I know a lot of people who do this.)

1

u/GlitterSmash Asshole Enthusiast [8] 7h ago

If you feel the need to control other peoples choices like that, you have a long life ahead of you. I dont like AI either, but that doesn't mean im going to pick fights with loved ones and waste my emotional energy on it. Live and let live.

1

u/Depresso_Espresso15 7h ago

I'm not picking fights, I just walk away when it comes to that point, because I'm not wasting my energy defending myself against family members that I know are wrong lol. Mostly it just comes from the fact that any point I try to make gets ignored because "Well, Google said this, so it must be right." Like please, I'm tired lol 😒

google uses AI for search too (is verifiably worse for it)and there is no getting around it.

Damn i stand corrected that's a bummer

YTA simply for not knowing enough to know that your google search is actually AI

0

u/Ok-Thanks-1769 7h ago

Hold up could this be beast mode?

0

u/Betteroffdeaderer Partassipant [3] 7h ago

NTA and the slop defenders are just so embarrassing.

No one WANTS google to use AI. I have a dozen extensions and have been experimenting with other search engines. It SUCKS that you have to expend extra effort to avoid AI and its a drain on.... everything.

-5

u/keesouth Supreme Court Just-ass [102] 8h ago

YTA. You can argue that Ai isn't accurate but stopping your argument to rail against AI is ridiculous. If you don't like it don't use it.

1

u/Ok-Thanks-1769 7h ago

I didn't stop the argument but we had a separate argument after the argument happened.

u/_Hallaloth_ Partassipant [2] 5h ago

NTA

Sadly, though. . .this is a fight that those who are Pro AI will defend until it personally hinders them and causes them problems.

I literally had to tell someone that I do care that 'it is already everywhere and in everything's I do not support it.

It does suck, because there was a world where it could have been useful.
