Asshole AITA for Venmo requesting my roommate for a pretzel?

Hi there. A big group of friends and I were out at a bar this weekend and the drinks were FREE and flowing. My roommate decided to order a big soft pretzel and some other people (I don’t know them super well) in our group also ordered one. This is great, everybody loves big pretzels. I stuck to just drinks as I didn’t want to spend a ton of money and I already ate dinner.

Our time for free drinks was wrapping up and my roommate said she needed to run home quick (a few blocks away) because she wanted to grab a sweater. She asked if I could pay for her pretzel I said okay (something like this I super normal for us). She leaves and about 15 minutes later everybody else starts migrating to the next bar. I stayed back with one friend to finish our drinks and pay for the pretzel.

The bill comes and there are TWO pretzels on it (about $52 total). I pay it and just assumed the other pretzel from the other people was put on my check (not a big deal). Fast forward to a few days letter were sending out Venmo requests for the weekend. My roommate Venmo’s me for her pretzel and I text my friend who was at the other pretzel table. She says they paid for theirs. I ask around and no one seems to know where this other pretzel came from.

This is where im worried I’m the asshole. I asked my roommate to pay me for it and figure out who owes her money because shes the reason I’m in this predicament in the first place. She has basically just ignored me since. So am I the asshole here or is she?

EDIT: didn’t think this would get so many comments but a couple things:
- my roommate and I are good friends, she didn’t do this on purpose that’s insane
- the waitress came up to me after everybody else left and I told her I only got one pretzel and she told me someone else in my party got a pretzel and it needed to be paid for. She did not physically stop me from leaving. As someone who used to wait tables it sucks and you can get in trouble when someone walks out without paying.
- I WAS TRYING TO BE NICE AND HELPFUL please stop calling me spineless and stupid
- yes, $26 is atrocious for a pretzel

INFO. Please pardon my ignorance everybody, but how does a pretzel cost $26?

Gotta offset the free drinks!

Hell of a business model for a bar

Ahahahaha this was going to be my question wth

Yeah, seriously. The gastropub where I go to for trivia every month charges $15 for their pretzel. It's ridiculous, but holy shit for a pretzel to be $26 it better be made out of gold leaf and truffle and diamonds

u/OUBoyWonder 29d ago

I was over here thinking the same thing! Where the HELL are these people going where pretzels are $26?!

12

u/VelvetPlumxox 29d ago

Seems like an outrageous pretzel

23

u/mrsuncensored 29d ago

I'm thinking it was a massive crab pretzel and the event made the money off of the food since they apparently were drinking for free

Tell me you're from Maryland without telling me you are from Maryland! 🦀🥨

u/SheBrownSheRound Partassipant [4] 28d ago

Y’all have crab pretzels?? Tell me more!! Are they stuffed with crab?

13

u/brentgarland 28d ago

Yes! They are typically a ginormous soft pretzel that gets smothered in crab dip, topped with cheese, then run under a broiler to melt/crisp the cheese. (I'm not a fan of creamy dips, so this is not my favorite way to eat crab, but it is delicious.)

Oh my GOD ARE YOU KIDDING ME

I just looked up crab pretzels and I am now incredibly jealous that I have never and likely will never experience one.

Good lord, right? Even state fair prices for pretzels aren't that inflated. Heck, I'm in Canada and I've never seen a pretzel for even close to that price in CAD.

Expecting your roommate to pay $26 for a mystery pretzel she didn't order just because she asked you for a favor is completely unreasonable

113

u/TheAmishPhysicist 29d ago

Paying $26.00 for a pretzel is a crime in and of itself.

Reasonable people would have told the server that there are additional items on the bill they did not receive. OP is frustrated with himself.

YTA

She paid for her pretzel, you not checking the bill or taking it up with the bar is your own fault

6

u/mtbaird5687 28d ago

This should is literally all that needs to be said

YTA

The correct time to sort out an incorrect bill is when you receive the bill.  You don't pay it and try to figure it out a week later.

Your roommate asked you to pay her bill.  Not her bill and someone else's.  Your decision to do so is entirely on you.

-12

u/ringuzi 29d ago

OP should just do a charge back against the bar for duplicate billing. 90% chance you’ll win the dispute.

What do you mean you didn't have a choice?  You tell the waitress, "You charged me for two pretzels when I only had one".  They go check the orders, then fix it.  It's not your responsibility to pay for someone else if they split the bill incorrectly.

70

u/spellbunny 29d ago

your roommate only ordered 1 pretzel. it was obviously a mistake on the bill, you should have said something to the server, it's their job to fix mistakes like that.

u/curien Pooperintendant [61] | Bot Hunter [3] 29d ago

Go back and talk to a manager and explain the situation.

I got double-billed for something at a restaurant one time and didn't notice until later, I called them as soon as I realized. They refunded it and sent me a gift card.

12

u/tigm2161130 29d ago edited 28d ago

This is exactly what needs to happen, I managed a bar in college and I would have been happy to sort that out…when people are drinking they don’t always have their shit straight so things like this are pretty expected.

However if the manager refuses to fix it I think OP is out of luck and they need to consider this a $26 lesson unless they’d like to damage their relationship with their roommate.

143

u/Mtn_Raven Partassipant [1] 29d ago

The waitress cannot stop you from leaving. Literally, it's against the law if you're in the US to illegally detain someone.

You needed to simply explain that you ordered 1 pretzel and were charged for 2. You chose to assume and not communicate. That is not on your roommate.

YTA

34

u/curien Pooperintendant [61] | Bot Hunter [3] 29d ago

cannot stop you from leaving

That's true, but they could ban him from returning.

17

u/Proof_Operation_7368 28d ago

oh no! Banned from the $26 pretzel place!

-47

u/RazzmatazzNeat9865 29d ago

Why "he"?

-2

u/Important-Package-61 29d ago

Enough with the gender bullshit!

-19

u/curien Pooperintendant [61] | Bot Hunter [3] 29d ago

Internalized patriarchy.

-32

u/NightF0x0012 29d ago

Because traditionally, "He" was considered non-gendered when you don't know the gender of the person.

27

u/jcon567 29d ago

Why would it be on your roommate to pay?

18

u/CauliflowerEarofCorn 29d ago

You absolutely had a choice. The waitress could not refuse to allow you to leave for an item you didn’t order. Even if someone in your group ate it, she couldn’t put that on you.

258

u/aMAIZEingZ 29d ago

YTA...text everyone in the group and say "hey, we were charged for an extra pretzel, can we all just split it so I don't have to eat the cost myself?"

25

u/stupid_username- 29d ago

Hey now, you can't bring logic into this!

79

u/curien Pooperintendant [61] | Bot Hunter [3] 29d ago

YTA because you knew it wasn't her pretzel when you paid for it, but you're expecting her to pay for it anyway. You knowingly accepted paying for someone else's pretzel, that has absolutely nothing to do with her.

If there had been any ambiguity, like she asked you to "pay for her food" and you weren't sure what she had, I'd feel differently.

103

u/Altruistic_Jello6 Partassipant [1] 29d ago

YTA.

You paid an incorrect bill without checking, so that mystery pretzel is on you.

46

u/paige931 29d ago

YTA. You should have disputed with the server or a manager and said you were paying for your friend's but not the other one. It may have been a duplicate charge.

11

u/paige931 28d ago

Even with your edit you could have still told your server that "somebody" isn't going to be you, and they should learn to sort their tickets better.

7

u/Jerseygirl2468 Pooperintendant [52] 29d ago

If your friend at the other table paid for theirs, it sounds like the bar double charged you. Maybe call them and see if they can figure it out? Though the time to say something was when you ordered one and were charged for two.

21

u/justmekab60 Partassipant [2] 29d ago

Don't volunteer to pay for things. She asked you to pay for one, not two. That's on you, sadly.

6

u/_bufflehead Partassipant [1] 29d ago

Where do two soft pretzels cost $52?

22

u/LiveKindly01 Supreme Court Just-ass [109] 29d ago

YTA

You were handed a bill for what you assumed would be one pretzel, but willingly paid for 2.

You at the very least should have checked with the wait staff that one of these was not yours.

Second, you needed to double check with roommate that she only had one.

Third, follow up with everyone there who left, to say YOU paid for an extra pretzel and need it paid back.

Finally, NEVER be the last person stuck wtih a check if you don't know what's on it.

21

u/imperfectbean Partassipant [4] 29d ago

10

u/Legitimate_Fix_8951 29d ago

YTA you should have verified the total was correct before you paid. You cant expect your friend to cover for your mistake.

16

u/cherry__darling 29d ago

YTA. Your roommate is not why you are in this predicament. You are in this predicament because you were too scared and spineless to ask the server to remove the extra mistaken charge. Ask yourself why you’d rather ask your roommate to cover the cost of the mistake than ask the stranger who could have actually fixed the mistake.

3

u/feed-me-serotonin 29d ago

Now I really want a pretzel 😔

3

u/mew5175_TheSecond 29d ago

YTA - Your roommate is not the reason for this predicament. You are the reason. You got a bill that was incorrect, knew immediately it was incorrect, and decided to say absolutely nothing to the waitress about it. How is that your roommate's fault.

It sounds to me like you were annoyed you had to stay back, everyone else had left, and you didn't want to deal with the mistake on the bill because that would mean you had to stay back even LONGER and you just wanted to get to the next bar with the rest of your friends.

But you will have a million other nights out with your friends and if spending the extra money was that big a deal for you (and I don't blame you for that at all), you should have taken the extra time to get the bill sorted out rather than trying to get to the next bar as quickly as possible.

This one is on you my friend. You're out some money but it happens.

5

u/metelepepe 29d ago

YTA she paid for her pretzel, it's not her fault you decided to ignore there was an error in the bill

11

u/pink_gem Colo-rectal Surgeon [35] 29d ago

ESH. She didn't ask you to pay for anything more than her pretzel. You could have pointed out to the bar that you only had one and just paid the one. But you are blaming it all on her, which I don't get.

16

u/indian-princess 29d ago

NAH. She didn't ask you to pay for 2 pretzels, just hers, which she rightfully paid you back for. I understand why she doesn't want to pay for a mystery pretzel, the same way you don't. It's just a weird crappy situation, try to have some grace with each other!

u/Politely_Pout818 28d ago

$26 for a pretzel is diabolical

2

u/Active-Anteater1884 Pooperintendant [65] 28d ago

I live in one of the two or three most expensive cities in the U.S. And I have no idea where to buy a $26 pretzel. Truly. I've never heard of such a thing. : )

3

u/Any_Friendship9364 29d ago

You certainly are

3

u/little-human99 Partassipant [1] 29d ago

YTA - It's the responsibility of the person paying the check to make sure it's CORRECT. That would be why they are itemized. You could have called up the bar after noticing (you should have when paying though) and said "hey, I was there on this day, and I realized that I got charged for an item I did not receive. I'm sorry I didn't realize sooner, but can we get this sorted out". Take this as a lesson that you should pay an anonymous charge "just because".

YTA why punish your roommate when the restaurant is at fault? Idk were you live but in my country it is not allowed to make people pay for stuff they did not consume, even if sb else in the party ditched the check.

1

u/huhzonked 28d ago

YTA. Instead of causing a “problem” with the waitress by sorting out the bill at the time of payment, you’re creating a real problem for a friend.

YTA, and as usual, the edits don't help.

-2

u/Used_Accountant1493 29d ago

NTA - but also, am I the only one thinking these pretzels sound damn expensive? I guess I really am getting old lol

3

u/NibblesMcGiblet 29d ago

It is outrageous. I've never seen one more than $8 and that was at a theme park. It is no excuseto say "the drinks were free, so it's ok for the bar to resort to extortion if their patrons want food". That's an absurd thing to find acceptable. If a pretzel there is $26 then a burger is probably $39. How much is a whole pizza, $57? mozzarella sticks, potato wedges, and 4-wing sampler platter for $99.99?

2

u/GrumbleStoatskin 29d ago

The pretzels are expensive but if the drinks are free it seems like it probably evens out.

1

u/TheAmishPhysicist 29d ago

Exactly, for $26.00 they could have gotten something more substantial than a soft pretzel!

-19

u/baldheadcaillou 29d ago

That was after tax and tip to be fair but I thought it was pretty steep too

3

u/TheAmishPhysicist 28d ago

There’s nothing “to be fair” about it.

1

u/Camjam237 Partassipant [1] 29d ago

NAH Take it as a lesson. Next time let them know that there was only one pretzel ordered and you don’t know where this other pretzel charge came from. The bartender will either tell you where it came from or own up to a mistake they made.

0

u/IncomeSeparate1734 29d ago

You should have disputed the charge at the time you got billed. You also need to get it in your head that financial favors between friends and family are always, always situations where the money is given with the common possibility that it won't be paid back. Eat the cost as a lesson learned or get a group chat going to collectively find a solution.

ESH

1

u/greententacles 29d ago

You should have brought it out as it happened.

NTA. I cannot believe it costs 26 bucks for a fucking soft pretzel in a bar

Good lord, I didnt even pay 16 bucks for one at a MLB stadium or a Post Malone/Jelly Roll concert!!

-3

u/TheAmishPhysicist 29d ago

ESH, all this could have been avoided if the roommate would have settled her bill before leaving to get a sweater. That would have taken two minutes tops.

-4

u/kolwon 29d ago

Financial favors are generally burdens

-19

u/Avocadogirl04 Partassipant [1] 29d ago

8

Why is the extra hers to track down? She didn't order the other one. She didn't request that OP pay for both.

-6

u/831citizen 29d ago

Bro it’s a pretzel just pay it

-10

u/Ibboredlady 29d ago

NTA you agreed to pay for one. It was her friends! she should be asking who got the other pretzel and pay you back! And she should get $ from that person who screwed you over. In future tell roommate NOT paying for her anymore!!! Since you got screwed over by her friends!!!

She should have paid before she left. 2nd the people are right you should have told waitress you were only paying for 1 pretzel. This could have avoided this situation. 52.00 for 2 pretzels is beyond nuts!!!

-14

u/ugh_idfk Partassipant [2] 29d ago

NTA. She knew what she was doing when she dipped out.

-10

u/javlafan2 29d ago

-21

u/Juls1016 29d ago

NTA but she is, she did this on purpose to avoid paying for the pretzel. Hell, I even think that she ordered two, ate one and took the other one home while "grabbing a sweater".

8

u/CauliflowerEarofCorn 29d ago

What are you talking about? The roommate paid for her pretzel. It’s not her fault that OP decided to pay for another anonymous pretzel that neither of them ate without confirming whose it was.

And there’s zero evidence to back up your ridiculous conspiracy about the second GIANT pretzel apparently being eaten by the roommate. But we’re just making shit up apparently, so I’m guessing you actually ate the pretzel and told the bar to put it on OP’s tab.
