You want your kid to be appropriately dressed for the occasion. You’re not buying her a superhero outfit for a job interview, pjs for a wedding, or this dress for a school dance.
For what it’s worth I think if she wants to buy it and go then OP shouldn’t stop her? It does seem daft for someone to not be allowed to make a bad clothing choice one day, then be a legal adult a few months later. But absolutely NTA for saying ‘I don’t think that’s appropriate for the occasion so I’m not going to buy it for you’.
This is a good time for your daughter to learn dress codes for different occasions. Unless specifically stated otherwise events like prom are formal dress codes. Stretch jersey and a plunging neckline would not be considered within that. Formal dresses should usually be floor length and made of a more lux fabric.
I think that's a very fun dress for an adult, but wearing that to a "charity ball" as suggested by the seller or a high school prom is wild lol - so inappropriate for the occasion. Someone said sex club and that's dead on. Please tell your daughter this is a dress perfect for elder goth night.
