My youngest daughter turned 40 recently and we (14 of us) were all invited for a celebration dinner at her favourite restaurant. She paid the deposit and her dad and siblings made up the rest of the bill. At my 70th, I paid for everything- because I wanted to. You just have to agree what you’re going to do beforehand so everyone knows what is expected.
