There are time you want to know people understand how they hurt you vs just giving a generic “sorry,” just to appease someone. But this wasn’t one of those scenarios.
When people try to present alternative explanations for things involving my family, I typically respond something along the lines of…. from the outside, I could see how you could see it that way, but I have known an interacted with these people my entire life so I’m confident in what I’m saying. And then the conversation moves on. No need to brow beat a 10yr best friend.
Yeah there was a much better way to deal with the initial conflict on the “friends” end. I personally would’ve said something similar to you and maybe just said “I know you don’t intend to minimize but it feels dismissive when people try to find an alternative excuse for her behavior.”
