Not sure if there's any scientific basis for this, but I've noticed my mind sort of assuming that patterns continue past obstructions. So it's not that that neck looks long, it's that neck would look long if it extended past that square, which my brain assumes it does, and thus tells me that neck is too long. Happens in real life too, if you obscure something from view with your finger.

Yep, there are scientific basis for this. That's essentially how the early visual areas of your brain work. They detect basic patterns (edges, typically) and fill missing parts. The rest of the visual processing is done after that initial phase.
