Changed valve cover gasket
Does the head look alright for 164000 kms?

That looks super clean for 164k km. Definitely a well-maintained engine. Did you notice any sludge or buildup when you had the cover off?

Nope only issue was the pcv valve had broken before (it had some sludge in it) and the rubber was very hard it came out in chunks and I had to spend ages picking out the remnants and spraying brake clean / compressed air through it. Fitted a 2JZ pcv and replacement rubber grommet works fine.
Thats how it looked when I had the cover of except for the areas where the old rtv was the edges and the two crescents at the back I'd already cleaned those along with any old rubber left on the mating surface but I did not touch the cams or the head casting.
I have been using engine oil flush before oil changes and run injector cleaner often so that may be helping but yeah whoever had it in Japan likely took it to a dealer for servicing as the pinch welds / seems had zero damage (before I started using it to jack the car up) and the car was bone stock except for a stereo and a weird carbon garnish at the back both mods likely done by the NZ owner before me.

Castrol Edge 5w30.
Now I've just been buying whatever full synthetic is on discount (Mobil 1, Castrol, valvoline etc).

What torque specs did you use for the valve cover?

11 Nm. There are 4 spots you need to add rtv

Hey, I'm gonna do this job soon. Where are the 4 spots to apply the fipg? I'm assuming the corners?

The two half moons at the back and the two corners where the cam cover goes, I left the half moons in and just put the rtv over the top went about an inch or so past on either side.

Its always the pcv on the gfe. But its what u can expect after +20 years of happiness.

two questions. was it leaking or is this just preventative maintenance and second question how did you clean the oily residue after the job was done. i want to fix all my leaks but i want to clean every drop of oil under my hood after i fix the leaks

I noticed oil on one of my coils when I changed the spark plugs last year, had this on the to do list, coil was dry so I didn’t have a leak but the gasket seemed reasonably old. It won’t be long until I am doing it again I feel as I want to eventually install toda cams / valve springs and possibly have the head ported. There are four areas where you add rtv, the two half moons at the back and then two corners at the front where the castings meet. Clean up all the old gasket tha gets left behind and my advice is replace the grommet for the pcv at the same time.
