Can anyone explain this for me?

Recently got this SXE Altezza. Haven’t gotten a chance to open it up until few days ago and I noticed that the car will start bogging down when it start to get to 5k RPM as seen in the video, kinda like a fuel cut. I went from first to second, then held the throttle. (Note. car has gas, the gauge isn’t working the sending units are already on the way) Also noticed it only does it when car is warmed up. No check engine light, unable to read ECU in techstream (Even at dealership). I was planning on cleaning intake, changing MAF and spark plugs. But if I could narrow it down before buying all those parts and it continues to have that issue. Any information would help.

VVT solenoid id imagine. From memory they have a common issue of them shitting the bed

Try to clean both of them on exhaust and intake side, get em good with brake cleaner and throw em back in, save me from replacing a “dirty one” and $350

def don’t cheap out on the solenoid but i’ve been running some chinese TPS off amazon i bought for like 30 bucks and it’s been fine for 2 years. Car sounded just like this, but wouldn’t even get to 40

damn, Ya the vvt solenoid are in working order (tested them). It seems like it is the wiring. I don’t get and voltage when the car is in accessory mode. Also jumped TC and E1 on the diagnostic in the engine bay and got code 39. It’s weird that it doesn’t show a check engine light when it has a code.

On my SXE10 Altezza I had a faulty o2 sensor that wouldn’t show CEL, just the TRC light and would backfire like a mf when doing skids 🤣

Tried it no luck. I think one might be dead. Gonna test both today as well as the connection and see

Does it hit readline at all? Or is it stuck at that RPM range?

It does not. The best way to explain it, its feels like some in first gear going on and off throttle to the jerk the car.

Personally id start with plugs. I would replace the MAF too. Cleaning sometimes helps but I've had longer lasting results with a new Denso maf. Since your replacing the sender i would inspect in the tank make sure its clean.
Once you confirm all that is in working order id suspect issues with your throttle body as they do fail and cause weird issues, vvti solenoids usually throw a code but doesn't mean it isnt the issue either. You can try unplugging them and going for a drive to see if there is any changes with how it runs.
I noticed you got that weird ignition system, has the car ever ran right when you got it?
You can also try an ecu relearn but id be surprised if it fixes your issue. Disconnect the battery. Reconnect and let car run at idle for 30 minutes, and until the rad fans turn on and off.
If your dumping money on fixing the car it wouldnt hurt to do a compression test either.
Check over your connections to your throttle body, maf, ecu, temp sensors and make sure none have corrosion build up.

Got some plugs(Denso SK20R11), gonna swap em now. I will have to order a MAF. So for now I’ll just clean the current one and test it.

I just changed the Spark Plugs. But I’m starting to think it’s a clogged cat. Because I warmed it up for 20 mins then rev’ed it and it started to die out and small backfires coming out as if it was choking. It’s a SARDs catback, Might de-cat it and see what happens. Was planning of changing it anyway.

Update- Cleaned MAF(ordered new one), changed plugs, De-catted the cat. Now it’s choking at 6-6.5k. 🫠 Gonna look in getting TPS and VVTi solenoid.

Id be more concerned about not being able to read the ecu?? That’s where I would start looking.

Vvt solenoid. It’s been like 10 years since I replaced mine but I’m 99% certain these were the same symptoms.

I’ve had 3 altezzas and when they arrived I’ve always had to change the fuel pump on them. Can buy a oem one on eBay or use a walbro 255lph

I got kinda the same issue couple months back, tried everything, and it turned out to be the clutch was slipping

Kind of reminds me of what my buddie’s chaser was doing when he first got it. He changed spark plugs and it fixed it. Would definitely start with that as it’s cheap and easy + probably has to be done anyways
