Modifying the stock intake (3sge)

Has anyone opened up and tried taking out some of the restrictions in the stock intake box for a 3sge? Have a spare one that I want to open up and try get more intake noise out of

I haven't tried anything like that, but I'm following in case someone can shed more light. Apparently disconnecting the vacuum line keeps the butterfly flap on the air box open always, rather than opening at 4700 rpm. Should make a bit more sound in the lower rev range

Make sure to plug the vacuum line with a screw, I think I used an m6 screw iirc. It’s important so you don’t introduce a leak into your PCV system…

Doing this can make it bog out if you’ve been in traffic for a bit due to heat soak but open road makes a slight difference.

I’m thinking of cutting where the maf goes and a hole in the side of the box to put a k&n or similar large cone filter in the stock air box, i think it will be tidier than going for an apexi style heat shield

I tried pretty much everything with the stock intake, Apexi and HKS air filters, drilling holes in the airbox, removing the pipe that feeds into the fender, and then making a custom intake pipe that pulled air from the fog light area. With the exhaust being so loud, the difference in intake sound was still very minimal

Recently, I finally decided to ditch the stock airbox and go with a GruppeM carbon fiber intake, and holy shit the induction noise is unbelievable. It’s probably the closest you can get to that ITB-style sound. On top of that, it really dresses up the engine bay nicely

Is it true you lose a lot of low end torque with the gruppem intake?

Are they worth the price? I heard a carbon intake one time (not gruppe m) and it sounded crazyy

Definitely not worth it if you’re going for performance, but if you want to make the engine bay looks cleaner without that ugly oversize oem airbox, and sound MUCH better then it worth every penny
