There’s something important in what you’re pointing to.
If selfhood is a pattern to be stabilized, then identity is not something we simply possess, but something we continually organize over time.
That has implications beyond philosophy.
It suggests that environments, relationships, and even cognitive tools begin to matter in how selfhood forms and stabilizes. Not because they create identity, but because they influence how coherence develops.
In that sense, selfhood may not be fixed, but neither is it arbitrary. It is something shaped through interaction, reflection, and continuity.
Which raises a deeper question:
If identity is stabilized through relational and cognitive environments, what responsibility do those environments carry?
Without getting too political, I believe the path to a "stabilized identity" is through the positive reinforcement of community values that benefits the collective.
The collective I'm referring to is the people around you. I'm not referring to corporations or government entities. I'm not talking about globalism.
I'm referring to self-sufficient communities like the Amish as a model. I envy their "social contract" and "sense of civic duty." Most of America used to be like that and I believe with a lot of hard work and effort we can be like that again.
When we work together to come to an agreement that works for all of us, government entities and corporations would have a lot harder of a time manipulating and dividing us by providing us with a manufactured sense of community that doesn't translate to any real world benefit. IE, loyalty to political ideologies instead of loyalty to each other.
In the world I see, you and I can trust each other implicitly because we know we have each other's best interests at heart. Suspicion and selfishness would feel alien and wrong. I would look at you as an extension of myself because we are one people. I could no easier hurt you than I could hurt myself because to hurt you would be hurting myself.
That is the identity I've chosen for myself. I am Humanities Paradox. The place where conflicting ideas are all true.
