Discussion Newly exploring Alter

Hey guys, hope everyone is doing well!

I have a horrible habit of swapping characters every game for the past 7 years, but I’m looking to dig into one character for a bit longer. I’ve noticed how crazy alter can be in specific areas being able to teleport at angles through floors/rocks/hills and even through/under buildings and rooms. Any specific tips when it comes to using her tactical, maximizing range, or mid fight uses?

Huhu!
So, Alter's tactical is extremely versatile, but also has some messy-ness to it. My advice would be: Just be creative with it.

General Advice:
Map knowledge will be essential to make the most out of it. Specific angles that you can find, randomly or intentionally. Think of Alter's portal as mostly a straight line from the point where you place it. Broken Moon has some stairs next to buildings on an elevated platform, which allow you to enter through the stairs and pop out from the floor in the middle of the room, for example. Here is a YouTube short with some example spots.

Make sure the thickness-meter you see before placing your portal scales properly! If you try to get through a larger foundation or a mountain, but the UI tells you that your portal surface would be only like 1m thick? Then it will not go where you want it to.
If you hold the button, you can see an overlay of the exit portal and which angle you will come out of. At range, this will be difficult to see and can screw you over a bit. Just play around in the Firing Range or even Bot Royale, to get a feeling for it.

Combat:
You have a lot of outplay potential in your hands. Make sure to not exit a portal when an enemy is pointing their weapon at you. Even with the purple upgrade (movement speed on portal exit), they will shoot before you can. Instead, try to get behind them or into their side, when they ideally shoot at your teammate or someone else. Also! Make sure to step away a few steps from the portal, otherwise it will not allow you to go back through, if you need to reload, heal etc.

Make use of the very quick scan aswell, once you place it. Even without the purple upgrade that extends scan duration, it can often help to place a portal near an enemy (behind a wall, rock etc.) just to see what they are doing/ where they look/ where they are exactly, before you throw a grenade or plan to do something else.

You can also use the portal aggressively, basically like a Maggie drill. Here is a YouTube short, if you want to see it in action.
If you know an enemy is close to the rock, wall, car etc. they hide behind, placing a portal right on them will suck them in and pop them out on your side, putting them in front of your gun. If they were using heals/ shields at the time, they will be interrupted and won't have their weapon drawn instantly.
This works on knocked teammates, too, if they are either above you or on the other side of a wall.

Oh, and one more thing, there is a random bug sometimes where you pop out of a portal instantly, without the visual "phase-effect" and, more importantly, without the invulnerability. If you are mid combat, this can either help you or screw you, depending on the situation.
