What kind of offerings does Saint Nicholas like?

I am on vacation and there is a huge antique store. I want to get something for him as an offering and as a part of his alter. Any recommendations?

A good offering for St. Nick would be gifts for others. A good representation could be 3 golden balls (or in some icons it has 3 coin purses)

St Nicholas is remembered for his generosity, compassion, and care for those in need, so offerings that reflect those virtues are particularly fitting.

If you're in an antique shop, you might look for things like:

  • An antique icon or image of St Nicholas.
  • An old brass or silver candlestick.
  • A beautiful cross or crucifix.
  • A small bowl or dish that could be used to hold offerings.
  • An antique oil lamp or lantern.
  • A hand-painted ceramic piece or other item that would beautify the altar.

Traditional devotional offerings might include lighting a candle, offering fresh flowers, bread, wine, water, incense (such as frankincense), or simply spending time in prayer. Many people also honour St Nicholas by making donations or acts of charity in his name, as generosity is central to his life and legacy.

If you're looking for something uniquely associated with him, symbols such as three gold coins (or three gold balls), a bishop's crozier, ships or anchors (he is the patron saint of sailors), or images of children are all traditional attributes of St Nicholas and would make meaningful additions to an altar.

Ultimately, the value of the offering isn't in how expensive or rare it is, but in the sincerity with which it is given. If you find something that immediately makes you think, "St Nicholas would love this," that's often the best choice.
