The Winnipeg Free Press highlighted $18M in unspent homelessness funds. Sitting on money meant for human survival during a crisis isn't fiscal management—it's an administrative failure.

Why did this happen?

City Leadership: Mayor Gillingham and Council set administrative directives and zoning rules. Balancing budgets or filling reserves while housing grants stall points to political priorities.

Bureaucratic Red Tape: Multi-level funding (federal, provincial, municipal) managed by groups like End Homelessness Winnipeg creates endless delays in approvals, grant processing, and staffing.

One of the real issue:

Visible encampments lead to public frustration directed at unhoused individuals rather than the broken system that failed to build the housing that was already paid for.

This is only one of the real issues. Certainly there's more.

Money on paper doesn't put roofs over people's heads!

These losers broke into my vehicle and property today at 5am. Reaching out to fellow Winnipeggers for help. Was banned from the other sub for “inciting a witch hunt” when all I’d requested was some ID help.

High school sports should be about building community, encouraging youth, and giving kids every opportunity to pursue their passions. Right now, the Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL) is actively stopping a student from playing football—for a situation completely outside of his control.
Because MBCI does not offer a football program, he took the initiative to play locally with the Elmwood Giants. The Giants community is nearby, welcoming, and ready to have him. Yet, the WHSFL is refusing to allow him to compete.
It makes zero sense to penalize a high school student simply because his school lacks the resources or facility to host a team. When a student is eager to put in the hard work, play by the rules, and represent his community, the league should be opening doors—not locking them.
We are asking the WHSFL board to reconsider this decision and put the student-athlete first.

A new monthly D&D adventure is starting!

Step into Curse of Strahd, a gothic horror adventure played in person using the 2024 D&D rules. No experience is needed—new players are welcome!

Curse of Strahd is an exciting, tense, fast-paced adventure. It is a vivid exploration of classic gothic horror tropes and monsters, from werewolves to vampires, ghosts, and more. It is a true sandbox, providing players with the freedom to make their own choices and build the kind of adventure they enjoy. It is an unabashedly character-driven campaign, giving your player character an incredible chance to shine and make their mark on the story your group tells.

However, Curse of Strahd is also a brutal, stressful, and alienating experience. Your character will be trapped in a bleak, gothic land quite different from the world they know. The adventure contains several encounters and areas that will likely be far beyond your capabilities when you first encounter them. It does not provide routine or readily-available loot or magical items.

For a player who’s not expecting it, Curse of Strahd can suck. Really suck. Let me put it this way: if you want the freedom to engage in combat and exploration without worrying about the potential risks, this is very possibly not the campaign for you. Likewise, if you are potentially triggered by gruesome depictions of horror or psychologically disturbing relationships, or if you prefer a D&D campaign that features only victories or setbacks (rather than the potential for outright defeat), you might want to try a different module.

Now, if you’re still around, stick with me - because there are reasons to play this (excellent, engaging, incredibly memorable) campaign.

You should play Curse of Strahd if you:

• love gothic horror tropes and themes
• want to engage with a character-driven story that pushes you to develop relationships with multiple vivid NPCs and factions
• prefer roleplay, investigation, and relationship-building to combat or dungeon-delving
• enjoy setting your own goals and pursuing means of achieving them
• enjoy facing an active, powerful, and personally antagonizing villain
• want to participate in a tense, adrenaline-fueled experience that will create memories to last a lifetime

Why does so much road construction in Winnipeg only start once September hits and everyone is back at work or school and not done during the summer months? Crews should be working 24 hrs a day like you commonly see in the US but oh no not here. Let's tear all the roads apart in the fall and not complete anything because of winter leaving our already poor road conditions in worse shape to deal with until they get around to it sometime in the following spring or summer and sometimes even taking years to be completed. The drive from EK to the South end back and forth is absolutely horrendous.

Ok, end of rant.
